This is a bit of a different format for my Technique Vlog, but one that I'm kind of excited about because it's really, truly, what I'm working on while I'm working on it. It's taken me a long time to become experimental in sparring; a year, basically. I would always be working on things, but I was mainly forcing myself to do about 3 things and failing to do them most of the time. I'm able to experiment more now, play more, mess around a little bit and find it kind of amazing that a lot of the things that are surfacing at this time for me are things I've learned many years ago from legends in the Library but was never in the place to be able to work steadily on. And stranger still, I haven't worked steadily - at least not consciously - on these things but I absorbed them and worked on the basics around them to make them possible. Get good at cutting angles and suddenly some guard interruption is working. Get solid balance and stay in the right distance and standing leg interruptions are available. Actually get comfortable making contact with your opponent's guard and like 90 dominos fall into line.
So, I'm stoked that this is a real-time look at stuff I'm working into my sparring, all within a few rounds on a single day. Which means I'm being very experimental. Getting to the point of play is very important in sparring. I break down what the small technique is and where I got it or how it works, some areas that make it tricky, as well as why I like it. I hope you all enjoy this format, and do please enjoy my cackle.
This vlog isn't just about techniques, it's also about encouraging lots of play in sparring, and bringing things from the Library into your Muay.
Some of the Library Sessions I reference as sources are these:
#73 Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn 2 - Overcoming Distance (61 min) watch it here
The incredible Namsaknoi was one of the rare fighters who melded sheer physical power with femeu touch. In this session you learn how he exploited and explored angles, owned the edge, in a way that left him the king of Lumpinee at his weight in his day.
Bonus Session 9: Yodkhupon Sittraipum - Lethal Smoothness (73 min) watch it here
In this session Yodkhunpon really delves down into the smoothness of his style, with great emphasis on his galloping footwork towards the end. It's all about building a pressure style that does not strain, but rather exerts a constant music of forward attack.
#86 Rambaa Somdet M16 and the Art of the Stinging Attack - Session 3 (67 min) watch it here
Rambaa, whose name means "lunatic" in Thai, was one of the most colorful fighters in Thailand's history. In this session you learn the method to his madness, the way in which a constant stinging attack can lead to big shots and fight enders. This session is full of art and wisdom, from Thailand's first MMA World Champion and Golden Age Lumpinee fighter.
#2 Joe Hongthong - Developing Muay Khao Style (87 min) - watch it here
This is nearly an hour and a half of straight on Muay Khao instruction. Joe was a top stadium fighter and he's watched me fight for several years, so this is Advanced Level tweaking, as he teaches how to bring elbows and knees together, discussing the ways that dragging back can work for a forward fighter, and the differences with more technical (femur) approaches. Muay Khao is a technique unto itself.

The Yodkhupon 7 intensive sessions are also in the Sylvie Study Intensive.
