Having said I'll be doing tutorials in here, I realise that I haven't really done much of that, so here goes.

Fundamental to my approach to creating large battle scenes is the principle of taking multiple renders from the same camera angle, often with overlapping figures to preserve shadowing and make putting the scenes together much easier.

Here is a fairly simple example, because it's just for a single, seasonal, one-off render which will go on Deviantart at the end of the month.

Look at the browser, second from left (the picture thumbnails). You can see there are four scenes, clearly labelled (there'll probably be five in total). Each scene is two or three warriors and about the same number of Skeletons. You'll see there's a single base figure for the characters, and I add morphs and hair in the scene. It's only worth pre-creating characters if you plan to use them multiple times in a photo-story. There are four skeletons because each one has a different weapon, though I didn't end up using the archer one.

One more thing to notice: The two temp files- The shieldmaiden you can see in the left fore-ground has her shield overlapping the stairs, so when I added more Skeletons behind the Necromancer, I wanted to be able to load in just the shield on its own (every figure adds to the render time) to make it easer to put the scenes together. I also added a fallen shieldmaiden on the steps at the Necromancer's feet, and she needed to overlap with the combatants and smashed-up skeletons in the middle ground.

I still remember you being kind enough to explain this to me when I was first starting out <3
