Q&A: June 28th, 2023

Apologies for this being such a long gap since the last Q&A, it was quite stupid of me to assume I'd just immediately fall back in line the instant upon returning from NYC.

For now, we'll be returning to bi-weekly Q&A posts.

So lets catch up!

This might sound like a mouthful, but since you talked about liking Black Lagoon and Ghost in the shell because they tone down the “anime-isms”, are there any other anime you like that are a bit tropey?

Kakegurui is the most obvious example.

I think the reason it doesn't bother me like it does in shows like Claymore for instance, is that it crosses that threshold of being so over the top and absurd that I just end up laughing my ass off while watching.

I've seen many complain that the plot's too predictable, or that the gambling isn't authentic, but that to me is like complaining that John Wick isn't realistic. Instead of being a tornado force of chaos through Gunfights, Yumeko Jabami is a tornado through gambling, and it's that insanity which just puts a smile on my face every time I watch it.

Same too for Kakegurui Twin with Mary.

How closely does your script(assuming you write one) reflect what we hear in the video? I find what I wrote and what ends up in the video is about 20% different by the time I’ve said it out loud enough times to record.

Very close, because I've usually written about 6-7 drafts of a script before finally comitting to the edit, and often, while editing, I'll just delete entire sections of it on a whim.

Starting from scratch each time usually has me spending days and days trying to find what the basic structure of the video even is, that is what's time consuming.

Describing what doesn't work about a game level?

It almost takes care of itself.

Was there ever a show, movie or game you really wanted to love, but couldn’t?

Skyrim.

That game was my lesson in "don't force yourself to play, hoping it'll get better." Obviously, you should go into a game with an open mind and let it win you over, should it deserver to, but Skyrim was a game I kept playing for hours and hours, merely because I loved Oblivion and figured, "I'm supposed to love this too right?"

Dark Souls was that as well, until I played III and absolutely fell in love with it.

What do you think about 2077 reportedly getting massive mechanical overhauls for when Phantom Liberty releases?

It's a neat bonus, but honestly, I'm much more interested in just going back to that world again, I hadn't felt so attached to a cast of characters and it's world since Mass Effect.

Do you think an XBOX Series X is a good value today, are should I consider to buy a good PC with something like a Ryzen 9 5900x paired with a RX 6900 XT. I can't make up my mind.

Gaming PC is obviously a much bigger commitment, and I'd only really recommend it if you need more control over the games you play, and, if you've got the time to deal with any issues.

If you're the type of person who just wants to rest on the couch after a hard days work and play games with some friends, I would not recommend a traditional gaming PC, if you're not that type however, go for it.

I've seen you talking quite a bit about NFS Porsche Unleashed (or NFS Porsche 2000, for me, the European audience), are you planning to do a vid on it?

One day, it's such a key part of my childhood, and I've kept hearing from several friends that the game is unplayably broken and dated, but ever time I've revisited it, I've enjoyed it.

I'd be very curious what my thoughts would be met with.

what's an album from one of your favorites artists/bands in which you recognize as a ''good album'' by itself but it's so stylistically different from their usual sound that you struggle to get into it?

I'm really struggling.

I've got Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns, Nine Inch Nail's Hesitation Marks, and Celldweller's Offworld on Vinyl; I often really love the departures from artists, sometimes, those records end up being better to me than the originals that got me into the band.

Probably the closest answer I can give is Linkin Park's One More Light; despite the unfortunate context that album has now, it's still utterly generic Pop at best, and Heavy at the worst.

Pop can be great. I've loved Billie Eilish's records, grew up on Nelly Furtado, Timberland, P!nk, etc. I also disliked Linkin's previous record The Hunting Party a lot, despite its attempts at being the angriest.

I have had records that don't click with me at first, but get better and better the more I'm acclimated to their style; Death From Above's Is 4 Lovers, Nine Inch Nail's Hesitation Marks funnily enough, and Portishead's Third, among dozens of others.

Sometimes, when I see angry comments from people complaining about a band's departure, I get the feeling they haven't given the song another chance.
