I wasn't expecting to say a director's best film is Speed Racer, yet that's the case now. I don't like films that wink and nod to the audience to reassure them that yes, what they're looking at is in-fact, over the top and completely obscene.
Speed Racer doesn't do that, it just plays a completely absurd story completely straight, and it's brilliantly entertaining as a result, being easily the closest thing you could possibly get to an animated film that incorporates live-action.
Aside from a couple studio mandated decisions regarding the story, I was taken aback how much I enjoyed watching this film, and if you go into it with an open mind, you may so too.
