Recommendations: Speed Racer (2008)
Added 2023-02-06 14:00:06 +0000 UTCI wasn't expecting to say a director's best film is Speed Racer, yet that's the case now. I don't like films that wink and nod to the audience to reassure them that yes, what they're looking at is in-fact, over the top and completely obscene.
Speed Racer doesn't do that, it just plays a completely absurd story completely straight, and it's brilliantly entertaining as a result, being easily the closest thing you could possibly get to an animated film that incorporates live-action.
Aside from a couple studio mandated decisions regarding the story, I was taken aback how much I enjoyed watching this film, and if you go into it with an open mind, you may so too.

Still amazed that James Cameron was originally gonna do the Speed Racer movie at one point before he dropped out of the project.
