The amount of works that it has inspired over the years that feature dream sequences, other worldly art-styles, and time-travel might give the opposite impression but truly, this story in its plot is almost as bare bones as it gets...
Which is why it's such a consistently compelling character piece.
Totally get why someone wouldn't want to revisit a book they were forced to skim in High School, but mine gave me Ready Player One, so I can't speak to that. All I know is while many of the words and references in this Novel might be a product of their time, Holden Caulfield's inner-conflict is timeless.
