YT EDIT BLAZING SADDLES (1974) | FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION

As a young Irish kid, I loved the hate. No explanation is needed. I was a part of it. I got to join in on the crazy and it made me understand that we're all the same and that you only looked like an Ass if you hated other people. The movie was the great equalizer on the playgrounds. And yes, this movie was my Terrance and Philip: Asses of Fire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b19CN_V6P9E

With Halloween coming up, I have you watch a couple of Mel Brooks films. Either Young Frankenstein or Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

Same. This was one of my dad's favorite movies. He loved Young Frankenstein as well. Also Galaxy Quest. and Wrath of Khan.

For me, the only Mel Brook's movie I tend to like is Young Frankenstein (also starring Gene Wilder). You should put that on the list. Otherwise, he only manages to get a few chuckles out of me from time to time. There's some good gags in there. But on the whole, his films just don't work for me that well. One thing about this film in particular I'm not fond of is the 4th-wall breaking ending. Not as anticlimactic as Monty Python and the Holy Grail and its non-ending, but still leaves me unsatisfied. This is a film that I do like to use to call out the hypocrisy of film and comedy snobs who like to belittle a certain class of humor: the fart joke. I know many comedy film buffs roll their eyes when Eddie Murphy or a kids animated movie does a fart joke. I've managed to shut up a couple by pointing out, "And yet, somehow you find Blazing Saddles a brilliant comedy." Sorry, but as far as fart jokes go, I didn't find the one in this film very funny. A one note joke played out too long for it's own good. But I still find it hypocritical for the snobs who laud this film as a classic and comedy gold to give it a pass, and trash other movies for also including (better) fart jokes.

Blazing Saddles was never one of my favorites, but it always makes me think of my beloved late father. This was one of his favorites along with Young Frankenstein and History of the World. He just liked Mel Brooks’ style.

As others have suggested (and me too), Young Frankenstein should be your next Mel Brooks film. It would be fitting for Halloween. If you want the full impact, consider watching the original Frankenstein (1931). It will still be very funny without that viewing though, much like you watching Men in Tights before Prince of Thieves (which you also still need to watch, plus it has Alan Rickman/Snape as the villain, and Morgan Freeman who is excellent in every movie he's in). Young Frankenstein is less non-sensical, yet still silly and a lot of fun, plus the lead is Gene Wilder. On piece of trivia: the main theme song of Blazing Saddles was sun by Frankie Laine. When he was contracted to sing it, he didn't know that the movie was a comedy, so he sang it very serious and straight. I personally think it's a great song, and often find myself singing it in my head.

This was definitely Mel Brooks pointing the finger at the movie industry at the time. I have always loved how all the racists in this movie were absolutely the stupidest characters. For a film maker in the late 70’s early 80’s to put his entire career in jeopardy just to even pitch this movie is crazy let alone make it. I was too young to know the reaction first hand but I’m sure it definitely didn’t go over well with the critics and movie studios.

Next Mel Brooks movie..... Young Frankenstein.

Mel Brooks was the Gov and the Indian chief. Great reaction and you handled the language well. It works because of what Brooks was trying to convey.

Steve Miller
