This movie originally did end with them going their separate ways, but the producers showed the movie at a few screenings to get feedback and everyone felt the same as you, so they ended up changing the ending so they’d end up together.

You should definitely check out Runaway Bride (1999), ALSO starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere! They definitely did it again... their chemistry is amazing!
