Healing, strength, self-improvement, technology, societal advancement, as well as cheap sources of energy. It has a price demanding sacrifices.
When I first came up with this story years ago, it was almost a story against corrupt rulers. The story would take place as Aristeans came to offer power but demanded sacrifices. And those who were most willing to sacrifice others were the ones they were most interested in. Anyways I like the current story better.
