EP. 183 | What'd We Miss?
Added 2025-01-18 01:13:01 +0000 UTC
Hey! We're back! It's been a while, and I guess over the break James and his workshop decided to get real busy with new stuff right on time for us leaving, so now we're going to take a second and cover some of the highlights from the past month that we missed.

Fun fact, Shakespeare is responsible for creating something like 1,700 words still used in English (a few notable examples are kissing, manager, undress, traditional, hurry, alligator, bedroom, and downstairs.) He's basically "the guy" for Early Modern English.

Would love some more WH40k games. Some strategy or tactical game would be fun, in the mold of dawn of war, but maybe a bit more slow paced and deliberative (yes, I'm getting old).

Studied university level English literature (despite not being a native speaker, funnily enough), so let me set the record straight. The English language has three very distinct eras of development:
1. Anglo-Saxon, AKA Old English, ca 500s - 1066. The best example is Beowulf. You will NOT be able to understand the original, it sounds like you put English, Old Norse and German in a blender, effectively. This is basically where it all started. In the latter part of the period, there was also increasing influences of Old Norse (via the Vikings), which at the time was a fairly closely related language
2. Middle English, 1066 - early 1500s. If you need a good example, yes, read Chaucer in the original. Following the Norman conquest of Britain, the country saw its entire nobility replaced by Norman French (who are actually descendants of Vikings, funnily enough), which started a massive top-down assimilation of Norman French words into English. The language at this point can sometimes be understood by modern speakers, sometimes not.
3. Modern English. Early 1500s onwards. Rather than a massive geopolitical event, the start of Modern English is just Shakespeare, full stop. His contributions to the language was so massive you kind of have to. Also, the language had changed so much since the Middle English period you kind of had to start a new category anyway. Shakespeare can be read, without too much difficulty, by modern English speakers, it's just a very archaic way of speaking, and many collected works volumes comes with an ongoing notation system or glossary for strange words that are no longer in use, but other than that? I've read original Shakespeare, it's definitely not impossible. 🙂

The problem is that they kinda wrote themselves into a corner cause oh man the culture is different now, their marketing needs are different, and so much about The Emperor's Children IS cool, but there is only so much you can do with the lads who-sorry, gonna say it graphically to illustrate the point-who fucked off during The Siege of Terra to go rape civilians to death and then make crack rock out of their corpses, like that's...you don't...you don't really pull back from that once you've written it. They try, they try very hard, and it just feels frustrating and disingenuous. I almost feel like i'm being gaslit half the time with Fulgrim and The Emperor's Children i'm like nah man you can't fool me i know what these dudes are

Summoned by someone blaspheming Shakespeare and the English language.
Shakespeare and Elizabethan English is early modern English. Beowulf, as mentioned, is a good example of Old English. They are two wildly different points in the development of the language. Please do not mix them up.
On topic, I hear "Cadia floats!" and my brain answers with "We float for Maccrage???"
