Episode 235 - The privacy and beyond of a life without a SIM

In today's episode, I dive into details on how I live my life without a SIM card (mostly). I answer some questions and concerns from my video on why I don't use a SIM - https://www.patreon.com/posts/why-i-dont-use-114635422

I think either is fine. I had an old device that I didn't feel like throwing away so I repurposed it for this. But I wouldn't buy a new phone just to have plans on it. Also, I am not really aware of any privacy benefits of a Calyx hotspot and from the prices, it's really expensive (around $500 a year if I understand correctly). If you know off any, let me know.

The Hated One

And to be clear, I'm not talking about what actual plan you use, just like what would make this possible like should I get a prepaid plan through some phone carrier or something like that? I figure getting the Calyx Mobile Hotspot would be best. Just looking for more information in general.

The Drifter

I am really interested in this, I had this idea a long time ago but I didn't think it would work well I would really be interested in how you do this, and what your experience is with it, like a deeper video on it. But I know I am just one person but if you could tell me about the mobile Hotspot situation that I asked about and basically what Hotspot you use or what plan you use?

The Drifter

Is it better to use an old phone as a mobile hotspot or should I just use a regular mobile hotspot? I am thinking at least with a old phone I can put a VPN on it and turn on airplane mode on it as opposed to a regular hotspot.

The Drifter

It's coming up right now! Will be complimented with a long podcast episode too (probably tomorrow).

The Hated One

I am super excited to see your new video about the most private phone based on evidence.

Also I'll be interested to learn (out of curiosity) what theoretical man in the middle attacks one is susceptible to when using wifi. For example isn't DNS poisoning a potential hypothetical attack if you are not using a VPN and/or a system wide DNS over https on your phone?

Chris

Hi THO. Thank you very much for answering my question. You mentioned in your answer the MAC address randomization of GrapheneOS. Do you by any chance know if CalyxOS MAC address randomization is as good? I would expect and hope they have the same one because they are both open source projects and improvements in one can be copied to the other. I'll be interested to have a check-list of good practices for a someone who is interested to try what you are doing. As a start just a check-list for using WiFI privately and securely. Most of it I'm imagining are one time actions like turning on MAC address randomization. I'll watch your older videos again and maybe try to make a check list from the information there. I believe they are called "Here's How They Built The Most Secure Phone On The Planet" and "My Phone Is Anonymous Now". It would be awesome if you had a github/gitlab page associated with each of your video guides. This can include among other things check-lists for implementing all the steps in your quide. This way people can use it as a quick reference such that the don't have to watch the entire video. I understand such a thing is going to be a lot of work though. Let me know if I can be of any use to you in case you take on such project.

Chris

According to govt, providing phone no is not mandatory but it is not implemented by any laws, as a result the loophole is getting exploited. There are place that does not require but slowly they are heading towards "required" because of marketing & targeted ads stuff

inferno_potato

This is crazy. Is that by law or by custom? Can you find places that don't do this?

The Hated One

If they ask any confirmation txt then no

inferno_potato

This is actually terrible. There is no possible way to opt out or give a fake number?

The Hated One

And sometimes they check if the phone no is real or not buy sending a text asking. And we do no have stuff like MySudo stuff here.

inferno_potato

It reminds me, in 12 min of ur episode u talked about asking phone no. It's a thing in India. If u go to any restaurant, mall then eat or buy stuff, u need to give them ur phone no in order to generate bill either wise u won't be able to purchase it from there or u won't be able to pay bill for food and won't be able to leave off course. Then after giving ur phone no, they will call u after some day "hello sir, we are calling from this restaurant that u had visited some days ago, we are having an offer going on, are u interested!". This happens all the time here. Such nonsense.
