Hey just a bit of background information so that things make more sense. When the anime refers to Tohru's "way of speaking", what they are referring to is the specific way Tohru speaks Japanese. Tohru is constantly speaking in keigo, which is a formal or respectful way of speaking in Japanese. Its a type of speech that is normally only used towards superiors or in a business setting. Tohru speaks in Keigo 24/7, which is considered to be a very very odd behavior. Most people who understood Japanese would've been wondering from the start why Tohru was constantly SO formal and SO polite all the time, its not the way children would normally behave. And this is the specific habit or pattern of speech that Tohru picks up from her father. Obviously, English doesn't have an equivalent to Keigo, so it can kinda get lost in translation.
