As I wrote on your Facebook page: What is the universe expanding in to?

I get it. My brain turns to mush answering these questions. Imagine an infinite loaf of raisin bread that was always infinite and is always infinite. (lol, easy to imagine right?). That's one concept we have of an infinite universe that expands. There's no crust. So there's no edge of the bread. BAH. Brain hurts.

Sadly the search for dark matter has not yet turn up dark matter.. but my best guess is that we have much more precise measurements of other particles flying through our atmosphere/earth/us and at what rate.

Think about the time component of the expansion, when did it actually begin etc.... For time to have always been 1 second per second it would need to follow Time(to be checked) ^ (atan(1/time(now))) would it not ?

Two questions: 1) Is the Universe finite or infinite? 2) Is the Universe part of something else (e.g. a Multiverse)? Pretty sure there is no clear answer to either.. but equally sure you would have a lot of fun trying to address them in a video :)

I reckon I should say EMR to include all the "light". and yes, it's a wave really.

This may be an easy one but I haven't found an answer that satisfied me yet: Why does light travel? So, if I light a match or turn on my headlights, photons are created/released that immediately start going at the speed limit of the universe outward. and forever, if not deflected or absorbed. The most common answer I've found is "massless particle", but that doesn't suffice for me.

i wrote it in a reply up above but i'll write it again here... i'm continually stuck on "What is the universe is expanding into" question, especially when the answer that comes back is some form of "the universe is expanding, it just isn't expanding into anything". i feel like that sentence is an oxymoron and doesn't fit with the definition of the word expanding. so perhaps my question isn't what is the universe expanding into, but, what do physicists mean when they use the word "expanding" and how can something expand but not need to take up new locations to do so? the expanding balloon with dots drawn on it or the rising bread with raisins in it are decent visuals, but they still don't get around the fact that the balloon and the bread are occupying an area, and then are occupying MORE area that they weren't before. they expand into previously uninhabited locations. so... ugg my brain is dead. little help?

Can additional dimensions be "smaller" than our current ones, rather than "outside" of them?

Have we actively seen things pass beyond the boundary of the visible universe, or would the objects just fade away?

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin should be known by everyone who has even a passing interest in astronomy. Her brilliant Ph.D. thesis was the first to decipher stellar spectra to show that stars are mostly hydrogen. She gave us the first way to accurately measure the temperature of the stars.

I know there is no "physics" answer for this question but it might be nice to touch on it as an explanation of "why" physics can't answer it: What's outside the universe? I don't mean that in a cheeky way, but more like, how do we know that the universe is in fact infinite and unbounded?

What is known about how the universe is expanding? Because it's pretty clear the space in the Earth and in us isn't also expanding. Is the precise means how and where the universe is expanding known?
