"first half is straight up depression" agreed, as I have seen this movie many times. And sometimes have to skip the first half. But the ending is one of the biggest triumphing over hardship stories I've ever watched! I loved in an interview Spielberg did with Whoopi-he stated "you were part of my first grown up movie" one of the main reasons he did this film, I think.
