Voting for the Best Way to Vote

What's the best way to vote? Well, last month, several of YOU voted for the best way to vote, using four different voting systems. Here are the results.

This was a lot of fun for me, by the way. :)

In other news, my last video got age-restricted and views came to an abrupt halt after that. I am going to livestream about my experience with "age-restricted" content here in an hour or so if you want to try to catch it.

Thank you for your continued support!

Voting for the Best Way to Vote

I think it's just Democrat primaries so far

Mr. Beat

Yep, this is the main reason why I like it. It builds coalitions and favors moderates.

Mr. Beat

btw is rank choice in only democrat primarys because i dont remember it in the republican primarys when i voted last?

Devin Canada

I know only moderate republicans like RCV the reason is it seems that when RCV was initiated in Maine voters were confused with how it worked and a Democrate got elected without getting the majority of votes. in the next election however that changed. In alaska Republicans did a heavy job educating voters so the same wouldnt happen to them there. however moderate republicans like Glenn Youngkin like it because it was looking like Democrats were going to have a strangle hold on the state just off one city. it seems like to me that RCV gives even more power to Moderates then they ever had before and makes their voices more clear while those who are more for their team may have initial confusion with how the system works.

Devin Canada

I think we wouldn't see the polarization go away immediately under RCV- it would take at least ten years.

Mr. Beat

That is disheartening. That's pretty anti-freedom to me to ban alternative voting methods.

Mr. Beat

That's why I think at least a primary option for getting more moderates would be good. Half of me thinks RCV, in a general election, might not-really help the polarization since both sides are already nippy. However, I could see a lesson-learned opportunity if both sides inadvertently pick someone neither side likes. Maybe I'm overly pessimistic about that story.

It would be cool. The video points out great features of all 4 systems. RCV is not my favorite because I think it would be the hardest to audit for election integrity, but I’m still thinking about it. If it’s only used in primaries, it might moderate political candidate selection. Given the power dynamics of the 2-party system, it’s not surprising to see push back against using an alternate voting method for general election ballots (it opens competition). I’m seeing laws in several states pop up right now to ban RCV - one just hit my state legislature this week. I expect the discussion around voting to heat up around the country. Just another reason that Matt’s videos are so timely.

Believe it or not, that's what we have for primaries here in Kansas!

Mr. Beat

It would be cool to at least test the waters and allow more RCV in a primary.

Adam Christians

Thanks Joe. Yeah I had no idea about that. 🤨

Mr. Beat

Great video! Well done. I heard the RNC passed a resolution in their meeting last week opposing ranked choice voting. As the topic gets more play, your video is likely to get more traction into the next election cycle.

Joe Cook

Good luck with the presentation!

Mr. Beat

The timing for this is pretty perfect as I now have to present my talk in a school assembly. Thanks for making :)
