Those Who Wait - Updated Fancast

Something I've been thinking about lately, especially as we're hitting 5 years of Those Who Wait, and the publication of Midnight Rain is about giving the fancast a little... zhuzh, if you will.

The deepest thanks to posting this fancast of Sutton in the community chat - it really feels so hard for me to find a redhead with blue eyes, let alone someone that ~vibes with Sutton's vibe, so... this is absolutely thrilling for me.

And in regards to Charlotte - I very much want to lean in to the idea of a non-white Charlotte (and Elizabeth) in the current political climate. If there was to ever be a screen adaptation, I'd fucking love to have TWW visually reflect not only powerful women in politics, but (especially right now) powerful women that are not white that have been the president. Because we can dream, ya know?

So, without further adieu - an updated fancast!

(technically, my last fancast for Charlotte was also Latina! But... I did not really know who she was when I picked her. I'd picked her picture from a browsing of attractive brunette actresses and went from there. So, this time I wanted it to be a very deliberate decision)

I tend to imagine a version of Ana de Armas as Charlotte

Lucy

I was listening to the radio when the song "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles started playing and I never paid too much attention to it until I couldn't help but imagine this song playing during Charlotte and Sutton's first time together and then it hit me. It had to do with the "Southern style" and the black velvet (which we can use our imagination to play with for this metaphor): "Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees Black velvet if you please..."

Juliana

Haley, red hair and blue eyes is the rarest combo in the world, so probably why it feels so hard to find. Signed, A Redhead with Blue Eyes 😆

Sonia

I have to say, I literally have always thought of Charlotte as a younger Better Porter (the L Word)

Shana Peliti

😳🥵🥵. Good Goddess!! As if I didn’t love Charlotte already for being a boss B!tch I’m now completely swoon. I have a weak spot for Latina’s . Also I’ve always imagined Charlotte as Gal Godot

Megan Z

I always pictured Charlotte as Eiza Gonzalez, but specifically her with curly hair from the movie “I Care a Lot” (which is also wlw), and Sutton has always been Meghann Fahy

Ashley

It’s Ana de Armas for me too for Charlotte, but this version of Sutton is ev er y thing 🤌🏻

Kriiss

I always pictured Charlotte to not be white and so I was definitely surprised when seeing the various fancasts. I'm terrible at paying attention to book covers.

Cass

That's fair. Obviously, they are your characters. So I am by no means trying to overwrite things. I think my mental image of Elizabeth largely came from when she was "shovel talking" Sutton in Forever and a Day. She says something to the effect of how the Thompson name was both old and powerful. My comments stemmed from that metal image. All this to say, I think that what makes Charlotte an impactful character is not the white/brown/black/whatever skin. It's because she presents an ideal for what a leader *should* be. Not to devolve into a political debate here, but I am of the opinion that Harris was (unfortunately) just kind of thrown under the bus after some really poor planning by the DNC. So the change that Charlotte represents the most is a unified vision of a better future. Her ethnicity is a moot point for me.

Danielle

My thing is this: The Spencer family would be a bigger deal to change in terms of race/social acceptance in our country, because they were styled to be very Kennedy-esque, old New England money. The Thompson family is relative "new money" - within the last handful of generations. Honestly, the Thompson Foundation is what drove them to become INCREDIBLY wealthy (I think I referenced this in the last chapter of Guilty as Sin), and that was largely due to Elizabeth's decisions in running/creating it. I imagine that if Charlotte's grandmother married into a wealthy family and was a very conventionally attractive/shrewd person, she could climb social ladders. Elizabeth has never come from money/status, in my headcanon. The (unfortunate) reality is - the US isn't even able to elect a woman president in the 2020s, so... the fact that Elizabeth was the president (as a white woman or not) in the 1990s is extremely unrealistic in the real world lol. I don't think that this changes very much in my headcanon for their family/social status, if we can accept that Elizabeth was a president almost 30 years ago, already

Haley Cass

Yes! This is the energy I’m here for!

Monica McCallan

I love itttttt

Monica McCallan

Oh my god YES

Becky

When I was reading Midnight Rain, I was picturing Gugu Mbatha-Raw (San Junipero) as Charlotte! Love the fancast update!

heidstuff

I love Melissa Barrera. I’m into this!

Brittney Robins

Loved Melissa as Vanessa in “In The Heights!”

Diana

I think that’s my issue, honestly. It doesn’t just change the backstory. It fundamentally changes the characters themselves. Like the entire point of that backstory is that Charlotte is, essentially, USA royalty. Like a Clinton or Obama or something. So she has to be “perfect” in the public eye. If she was someone like AOC she could have probably come out and no one would have cared. It removes all of the conflict.

Danielle

Michelle Barrera is so unbelievably sexy. And, she was fired from a movie for speaking out against war. So kudos for thinking of her. Love it.

Spanglish sapphic

Yes it does change the characters backstory. Could be Cuban from Miami. They come from strong political and financial roots- like in JJ arias story. If she was more like AOC she’d be working class Puerto Rican- so that would have to change but it would also make sense why Charlotte feels the weight of expectations to succeed

Spanglish sapphic

Ana de Armas swoon

Spanglish sapphic

Yeah I could see that happening, generationally. I think maybe what threw me was the mention of Elizabeth being a POC. That kind of marriage during that era with extremely powerful people would have been next to unheard of. It would have been like a Kennedy marrying a Hispanic? Like think about how much of a “stink” the UK made about Harry marrying Megan Merkle.

Danielle

SAME! Love AOC!

Diana

Not weird! Love it!

Haley Cass

Wait, a social media celebrity.

Sarah Elizabeth Davis

LOVE the new fancasts!!! They fit perfectly and totally give off Charlotte & Sutton vibes. The idea of a non-white female president in the HCLU makes me SO happy!

Kayla Bhadra

Kennedy Walsh - she's an actress!

Sarah Elizabeth Davis

Maybe her father's side is old southern and her mother's side his hispanic?

Sarah Elizabeth Davis

Ohhhh. Young Bette Porter, yes!

Sarah Elizabeth Davis

AOC is who I had it in my mind too. There was something about Lori Prince’s for Charlotte that gave me that vibe.

Sean Riley

Oh, 100% SAME for me. I was in the mall and saw her on a cosmetic ad and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I even gasped quietly to myself and whispered, "Charlotte"!

Tanya

I’ve always pictured Charlotte as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In my mind not only does she fit Charlottes looks, but also her political stance and being a strong woman in politics.

Jolie Nerosa

Gorgeous, Sutton Spencer for me is always Sophie turner. And her mom is always Julianne Moore, because of course I assume it'll eventually be adapted for screen lol For Charlotte I oscillate between a young bette porter and Zendaya

Erin Hubay

We can't unsee it 🤣. The doe hazel eyes, the curly hair, the eyebrow lift. It's Charlotte!

Juliana

In my mind I actually "saw" Charlotte as Jessica Henwick.

Kris

Same 😂 I’m just like “that’s Charlotte”

Melissa S

Yesssss I love this new fan cast it feels very accurate

Mackenzi Mansfield

I love this Sutton a lot and even though I understand the concept behind Charlotte (and respect it) I’m just biased with Ana de Armas 🫰🏻 it clicks more with me.

Melissa S

Wow! 😍😍 Although I think Ana de Armas is very attractive, the new fancast looks more like I envision Charlotte. I'm sorry if this sounds weird but to be completely honest I had evision some of the character as non-white, including Charlotte, Marissa, and, Maya. I even don't know why. For this reason, I am even more excited with new fancast. And I looove the new Sutton fancast!

Lys

I always thought of a young Alicia Witt as Sutton. And if I were a millionaire I would be hiring Haley Cass and casting Ana de Armas and Alicia Witt (with some help from CGI to make her look lile 25 yo Sutton). Yes, I have actually daydreamed of this!

Juliana

The Latina origins concept kind of seems odd to me when mixed with Charlotte’s “old Southern money” backstory. I totally get that the fan casts are just like a theorycrafting fun thing! I am just making a lit geek discussion point rather than nitpicking. Like someone with old south roots would maybe have some Creole mixed in?

Danielle

I love the idea behind it and support it more than ever but my brain is locked on Ana de Armas as Charlotte. In fact, every time I watch a movie with Ana de Armas, I see Charlotte and not Ana de Armas. Sutton is spot on!

Juliana

Love the Melissa fan casting! I had imagined Naomi Scott as Charlotte and red headed Brittany Snow for Sutton.

IO

The Charlotte casting is Melissa Barrera, an actress I've seen in several things. She's amazing! The redhead... I'm not actually sure who she is, I think an actress. She just has the right look!

Haley Cass

I absolutely love thisss! let’s get production rolling hahaha

Fatou

This is so cool!! They actually look much more like what I had in my head when I read TWW, especially Charlotte. Are these "random" people or also celebrities?

Valeria Cabriolu

They fit! So looking forward to Midnight Rain!

Robin M Lee

Perfect 💯
