Track Walkthrough | Noisia - The Hole pt. 1

Comments

I guess, what Nik tries to say in every of his videos is, that making music is not a science. it's an art.

FRNCN

The pads were made with a Novation Peak :) N

VISION

How would you manage to reach this kind of Blade Runner-ish vibey pads with vst ? I mean, I understand the reverb or attack lenght stuffs needed but what about the harmonics to get this kind of result ? Thanks for the video anyway !

Reverend D.

This is an awesome trick at the very end! Also, this Vangelis-like sound is really god-like. I would love to hear more about a synthesis of such warm sound. Thank you so much for revealing a production part of this song.

Watching this again. The time signature is interesting, especially as my music teacher once taught me that everything has a rhythm if it is played long enough in a loop, no matter how strange it may be!

Kieran Unsworth

This is fantastic. I love making grooves in compound timing and get a great sense of success when it has a groove that you can move to and do not notice, yet is in a strange timing. On another note, please could you maybe do a video regarding MIDI triggers in Cubase and how to use them? I feel as though that is one technique of yours which I would love to know more about. Thanks

Kieran Unsworth

amazing

I love the imagery used, and the theory employed behind the sparse use of certain elements. Addressing conventions and deliberately deviating from them for a given purpose. Excellent video!

John Adkerson

Came here to say the rant on EQ was my favorite part. Usually one of the more esoteric parts of production and you broke it down elegantly.

John Adkerson

BEST noisia song for me. Thanks for that!

riva

Would love to see more about phasing and mono compatibility, the part in this video about using different EQ slopes was really interesting. I feel like it's a topic that isn't covered too well in most tutorials but can be super important!

Stuart Anthony

Great video, thanks for that, love to hear some of the theory behind the decisions you're making. Ableton lets you do that midi time stretch thing in the actual midi editor, so you can highlight some notes, stretch them dynamically etc.

Aaron Spencer

I'd love to see a tutorial on how you're using Sonic Academy - Kick 2 for kicks and snares, and other drum synths...

Luke Thompson

So glad you guys plugged your patreon, my new home

I learned so much from this video. Thank you! Cannot wait for more! Would love to see what you guys have to say about mastering and your approach to it!

Trentcast

Beautifully translated..i mean the whole pull of concepts and ideas putted in to one musical piece. It's so cool that the track has it's own meaning ...no need of vocal parts to understand the idea behind.Nice narration too.P.s.i know...that people need to find and open the pandora's box by themselves, the whole discovery part is fun,but nevertheless will we see a tutorial on your mixdown tecniques ..your bus/parallel bus gouping and routing workflow.Maybe i'm asking a bit too mutch:D.Anyways thanks for all your work in all this years!!Love you guys

Thank you! This has to be my all time favorite bass music production to date

Love to see a video about how you go about your lots drum funk !!

Yung-e

What great video. Thank you very much that was really insightfull. Im looking forward to the next. Maybe drums ?

Xantorias Lor

I think Mantra would be so cool to break down! For me it was so mindblowing but most other people might disagree...

Spinform

Excellent video - would be great to see some sound design sessions and have you talk through those.

Realy interesting, good stuff in there. Was hoping to see some group channel and sum busses processing too. For example do you glue those separate parts that from the bass drum (and snare drum) through any kind of summing processing to glue them together with compression? And do you have a sum or group channel for all drums, percussion, basses, etc?

Man I could watch these all day... Thanks so much for making these. Take my $$

Nico Stadi

absolutely

Raghav Wagh

Also since you asked, going over any purpose ep track at some point would be a treat to see

Bob Gibson

Best video yet! I got inspired to dust off Prism and load it up. Luckily it's a three-day weekend here in Germany. Excellent content many thanks!

Bob Gibson

Love these kind of videos Nik! Great job!! Love to hear the thoughts and ideas behind your tunes. Also great to get some insights of how your work around some problems in the mix on parts where it is "all over" the place sound-wise. Have great day! Greetings from Sweden.

Martin Γ…berg

Not going to lie, i'm currently working on an album and this has totally given me so much advice and inspiration I couldn't thank you enough!! Completely taught (or remind me) to not go too over the top with processing on parts and sound design... I kept getting completely lost on ressurecting old crappy parts that I was too stubbern to let go and choose another part haha I'd love to have a walk through on 'Tenticals' or 'Mantra' but to be honest the list could go on with what i'd love to see how it was done! The Mastering process is a good one too :) Anyway, I hope you guys are well and Thank you again!

Really enjoyed this vid great insight into the structure of a Noisia track i wish my brain worked like Niks brain haha Love how you made those kontakt drum hits with the plugins applied also the ghost sidechaing stuff also using volcano and prism fx like you did for me i have to watch it twice before it sinks in haha but some bits were kinda common sense to me but made me think different about approach a dnb track now love how you guys think of concepts like that black bag or sinking into a hole to come out the other side never think like that in a concept type of way very interesting also good to see some of the plugins an chain you guys use not a complex as i thought might have to get me one of those Peaks haha thing sounds badboy Things id like to see in the future working breaks and drums from start to finish maybe more sound design tricks and tips too also on the early stuff you did more 98 sounding stuff tunes that blow my mind of yours tunes like the tide or running blind also stuff on how to add drum funk and funk in general in ya tracks also master bus how to finish tracks good ways you know to get stuff to the end keep up the great work guys you lot are total dons in the studio could lisen to nik about production all day haha I mean you can have all the kit in the world but its ya brain and mind is the most valued tool in production i fall down that rabbit hole i need this bit of kit or gear to make good dnb restraint is a skill also !!

Yung-e

I'm so glad to see this vid as a reward. The Hole is by far my most favorite number of yours

All Hail Eris

Since you haven't been able to show much insight about the sound design due to being rendered,it would be cool if you considered like a reese tutorial but with an overarching Noisia philosophy.not really a tutorial or "recipe"per se but just some of your perspectives on why you gravitate to certain things or approach things the way you do

This is awesome! Would love more deep dives into tracks like this. Also, any insight into your mixdown process would also be really great,

Akuro (James)

Cool Video Nik! You made me rediscover prism for processing audio! And the trick with volcano it's a blast. If i can make a wish, it will be super cool to have an insight of one (or two even better) of the tracks from Outer Edges, i think the sound work inside is a masterpiece on itself. Also i think it will be a great opportunity to share your thoughts about making an album instead of a single or an OST commision in regards of creative decisions and technical stuff, by the way, power to you!

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Much appreciated :) Nik

VISION

Great video, love to hear the imagery / story telling of the music. Noisia has always had a deep transformative quality to me. So good to hear you enjoy making those videos for us, it is immensely appreciated. Thank you !

JP

Ofwel mss een project waar jullie enkel op sound design focussen voor bass geluiden / reeses

BERRIX

Vette video & tips! Zal het zeker nogmaals voor een 2e keer bekijken :D Tommy's theme outer edges remix next?

BERRIX

Great insight with all the quirks and "on the fly" workarrounds. You asked for suggestion walkthru's : Decloak's reese LFO mayhem. There was an older track called Stigma which i think utilised a similar technique and another even older track that i cannot find now - maybe this challenge tiggles you into looking into this. Allways wanted to ask about this ;o)

Georgie

Great video. You could show more examples of using EQ as synth shaper. Thanks

Adam Burucs

I really liked the old ask noisia bit on the podcast and I feel like this is kind of the next evolution of that. I'm constantly referring to those bits, or the future music mag vids, so it's super satisfying to learn how some of the greats are doing it! Would love to see one on could this be, leopard slug, or floating zero

sigjir

That timestretch midi trick is really cool! Hadn't ever considered anything like that but intrigued having been listening to more Jazz recently. Found a way in Ableton Live to do the same, so going to nerd out on that for the rest of the day.

Thanks a lot for this one! I actually listen and play a lot of Snarky Puppy and what I love about that is that the strange rhythms feel natural.

Jahfed Wismans

I really appreciate you making these! It's so nice to hear your insights on the creative process and how you came to each decision. It's also good to know that even you guys make shit sounds once in a while and toss them out like the rest of us!

So awesome to see this, the process behind one of the coolest tracks I've heard. My brain is on fire with ideas after watching. Thanks so much for doing this!

That was great :)

Luca Romagnoli

wow. the timing of this must be on purpose. I've been in the hole since last june, its been getting narrower ever since. Family illness, anxiety, moving, loss, depression, fear, unknowing. but moving through nonetheless. one day i will be out. Its crazy because this was the only song that really beat diplodocus for me. I've been in a bad way today, and i have a room of synths and toys to play with but was so discouraged and couldnt get myself to do anything. time to fire them up. THANK YOU GUYS.

This is a great watch, Would love for Nik to explain his process of the automation on the master bus in a future vid.

John McBeath

Never before has the 'release' of a tutorial satisfied me this much...worth the wait 🀯

Scartip

Wow! I’ve been hoping we would get a walkthrough of this track! It’s like Christmas! Thanks so much for these walkthroughs guys!
