A very different video

Hello my amazing Patreon family,

This is a very different video, but it represents where I want to take MALINDA.  Music combined with exploring a topic that matters to me.  When it comes to self-image and body dysmorphia I've had a long road and will continue to walk it.  So this experiment was very eye-opening.

I do not claim to represent anyone else's experience here.  What I hope is that people can look at this as an opportunity to not place me or yourself into a societally constructed category, but rather get rid of the categories all together.

Let me know what you think of this format.  Some videos will be more thoughtful like this, others will just be fun and funny, we'll see, but I'd love to know your thoughts.

Take care of yourselves, my friends.

When this video came out, I was going to an Intensive Outpatient Program for eating disorder recovery. I ended up sharing your video in one of the groups because I related to it so much. Your willingness to show this vulnerability did not go unappreciated. Thank you so much for making this video.

Emery

Being this emotionally vulnerable is challenging too. Thank you for this video.

Max Byrd

you look beautiful and you are amazing person

Peter Whalen

I wish I knew you were in the festival sooner I possibly could have gone

Love this! 💛

Laura Jolly

I just want to let you know, that you are perfect. And if you think that thoughts about being imperfect are unique to you, take a look here: www.lucybellwood.com

Wow! Thank you for sharing these vulnerable moments. It really struck a cord. You are a beautiful, inspiring, smart and funny woman. In short: You rock!

Spoooky

I'm sure everyone will say the same thing, but I don't see these "flaws" of yours. I'm autistic, and I never noticed any imperfections in your physique. Here I've been, thinking I wished I looked like you. Ironic, isn't it?

Noelle Krumbhaar

When you took the paper down, I got tears in my eyes. You are so so good at what you do ... your voice is as close to perfect as I can imagine, and your videos are funny and arresting, by turns. It's hard to imagine that you feel the way you do about yourself, since I see attractive, interesting, pretty, friendly, engaging, smart and funny. You aren't too skinny, btw. ;-) You look good, with and without makeup, and if ditching the mirror gives you a break, just do that from time to time.

Don Evans

I'm not a big mirror user but I know what it feels like to find nothing but fault in what you see in the mirror. Sometimes the best place to bring balance to your thoughts is to have other people tell you good things about you since we often only see the bad things in ourselves

Invisible Jazz

You are so pretty! I love your honestness and willingness to be vulnerable. You are amazing. Don't let what other people think about you affect what you think about yourself.

Wolfie

This was an emotionaly strong video. It must have taken a lot of courage to put yourself out there. Not just skipping make-up and mirrors, but to vlog about it and letting us see and hear about all your imperfections and your thoughts about them. We really hope you'll continue to work on your negative thoughts about yourself, because no matter how much and how many times we say, you are beautiful, your own voice is the largest. So let it be bright and possitive. Focus on the things that make you happy. Find small things about yourself you love. And please make a follow up video in a couple of months time about how you have worked with this. For reflection and inspiration. Because a lot of people go through this. Boys and girls, men and women. And to change your perception of youself and that inner voice can be an uphill loney battle. Let's try to change it together, reach out and help each other finding the good voices that makes us proud about being who we are with all the wonderful and imperfect sides.

I once, went a little over a month without looking in a mirror. My hair was short enough it didn't need to be styled so this was possible for me to do. I didn't consciously decide to do it, i just stopped looking at an image i didn't like. I have spent my whole life getting strange looks from people. I'm an amputee, it's part of the life. Hearing someone else talk about quieting those negative thoughts and voices is very helpful. I wish we could all see ourselves as those who care anout us do. They always see the beauty in us that we find so hard to see.

Debora

I had no idea you worried so much about your appearance. I had no doubt you thought about it and generally tried to look your best. But I think I speak for just about everyone when I say you look very beautiful and I never noticed these negative things you noticed about your own appearance. Either way I'm glad you realized that it is more important what you think of yourself, and learned to be neutral. Insecurities are unattractive! Get rid of them! Try corrective surgery!

My legs are different lengths too 👍🏻👍🏻

AgVoss

This is beautiful, YOU'RE beautiful! thank you for being so open and sharing this part of yourself :) believe it or not, us guys deal with these insecurities too, at least I know I do, so this was very eye opening for me. Much appreciation and love to you Malinda!

Jared Halley

You rock. Thank you.

Rrrose

There is such vulnerability expressed here.. thank you for sharing. I can only imagine being in a field where personal appearance is considered such a focus. I'm glad you had the opportunity to step out of the mindset for a while. One of the goals of meditation is the ability to recognize a thought, separate yourself from it, and be able to analyze it as its own thing as opposed to something integral from yourself. Wonderful how you were able to do that here as well.

Marlo Delfin Gonzales

Thank you for sharing this. It was really emotive.

I loved this video. I'm older now, and mostly happy if I am clean and my hair is neat - but gosh it took me right back to when I was young. I was never thin enough, broad of shoulder enough, good looking enough or just plain *enough* for myself for so much of my life. I wonder what it would have been like for me to take some time away from mirrors? I too have some scoliosis going on and I definitely walk with a limp nowadays, but that's likely due to a disintegrating hip. I love that you shared this with us, just makes you even more beautiful in every way. Thank you.

Diane Elaine McGowan

Truly amazing. The combination of music and life creates something more beautiful than either could be on its own. And I agree, VERY brave. Speaking as a filmmaker, however, the shots from sort of a diagonal profile view were a little awkward, especially since it would seem to switch to them with no real pattern or reason. That’s just my view.

Adam Myers

First of all, thank you for being so open and talking about all this. I have body dismorphism thoughts all the time and it can be very hard to hear these thoughts and ideas, especially if they're coming from yourself. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and words and thank you for the beautiful song that accompanies this gorgeous video. Thank you also for saying in the asterix, 'All genders actually'. As someone who is agender, but loves wearing eyeshadow, it meant a lot to be included considering a lot of people seem to think only woman wear makeup. Thank you so much for your beautiful words and know that no matter what you see, you are beautiful - inside and out, in part because of your true beauty of who you are as a person. Even if you yourself aren't always pleased with what's outside, know that your soul is beautiful for sharing stories like this, for the charity work you do, for being a great friend, for so many things. Sending you lots of love and again, thank you. ❤️

Sara Moller

Wow. Very powerful. You are very brave to put yourself (body and mind) out there. The part that felt the most real was the seconds after the paper came down. The tears, the acceptance and the commitment to move forward. Thank you for making this!

Jacques Major

Incredible. I would have gone nuts not looking in the mirror to check if I have a popped collar or messed up hair. Of course, what’s beautiful is not just what we see. Format wise, it’s great. Maybe once a month of content like this or even less, but no more. Mainly because I’m concerned of the stress you go through producing something like this. Really though provoking and emotional. Xx

Jonathan Isip

It's great

I like it 👍
