Music I like: March 2025

Hi all, I've been working like a rabid mutt on my new vid for a while now and I don't really have any creative energy left over by the end of the day for making more art, so I thought it could be fun to share some songs I've been enjoying lately. If that does not interest you, comment "egg" and you can digitally throw an egg at me that way.

I like plenty of big popular artists but I'm going to keep my focus on those that I feel are arguably underrated or up-and-coming. I made a Spotify playlist with all these songs too.

Recent Songs

DJ Python, Isabella Lovestory - Besos Robados (link)

Isabella Lovestory makes sexy reggaeton and DJ Python makes meditative ambient reggaeton. Together they made something that's almost like ominous reggaeton trip hop? Beautiful vibez

feeble little horse - This Is Real (link)

This song just came out yesterday but I was so blown away by it that I had to include it. feeble little horse's last album Girl With Fish is a recent classic from this current wave of shoegaze, but this new song announces that they're up to something new in pretty grand fashion. It starts off with their usually funky off kilter guitar tones, but about forty seconds in it explodes with a thunderous blast of guitars and drums, so huge and caustic that it made me giggle.

PPJ - Everybody (link)

PPJ are a Franco-Brazilian dance music trio that make tracks with simple, colorful melodies and big bouncy beats. This song really bumps imo, makes me want to drink a fruity gay lil cocktail by the beach. They have plenty of other delightful jams too that demonstrate lot of range in terms of genre and dynamics.

Malamiko - trinity (link)

Beautiful shoegaze from Minneapolis, I saw them live a bit ago and they absolutely ripped. I love the fluttery watery high notes on this one.

Jim Legxacy - father (link)

Jim Legxacy's last album homeless n*gga pop music was one of my favorite albums from 2023, full of crazy futuristic beats and melancholy singing. He has a gorgeous voice and an unusually emo sensibility considering how chaotic and high energy his production tends to be. This new single from his forthcoming album black british music (2025) is tonally more cheerful but still has a subtle heavy-heartedness that I find really intriguing. I really like how he chops the sample to sound like "father" or "bother" based on context, very clever :-)

The Tubs - Narcissist (link)

The Tubs make sunny jangle rock and their frontman Owen Williams has a romantic, almost tortured way of singing that I really like; he reminds me a little of Morrissey, but with a much lower range. Their new album Cotton Crown is a delight front to back, but I really love the catchy guitarwork and unsettling lyrics on this track.

fakemink - Crush (link)

fakemink is my favorite rapper right now, he does fly little raps over smeary psychedelic beats and releases a new song nearly every week. I like his lyrical perspective too, he has a certain chill humility about him - definitely the only rapper who I've ever heard say that he's "got his PJs on" and somehow still sound cool. "The devil's in the details/I see the bigger picture" is one of my favorite rapper brags in a bit. I love to click on every song of his that pops up on my youtube feed; he has so many good ones.

Josi Devil - Restless Sleep (link)

Evil ass uk garage. I don't know why there's so much UK music on this list, I listen to music from other places I swear. Anyway I could imagine a bunch of scary people dancing to this. When I listen to it I become temporarily scary.

TORBA - DARE (link)

A truly rude industrial jam for miscreants only. Punch a hole in the wall music.

RADA - 5amlondon (link)

This is such a lovely wispy r&b track. I love the way RADA underenunciates words. She sounds famous, she should be famous already.

JJULIUS - Brinna ut (link)

I don't really even know what this is. Has a bit of a dance beat but kinda has the sound palette of dreamy chamber pop? All I know is it's Swedish and CUTE!

oklou - ict (link)

This album has already been praised backwards and forwards all over the net but I love this song in particular, feels like a much needed reminder that summer's on the horizon. I love the indulgent reverby horn solo intro and her speedy joyous talk-singing. Throughout the day I find myself muttering "Strawberry dancer.. vanilla summer.. driver pull over.. ice cream truck"

Bonus Older Songs

Slowwves - Anywhere Else (link)

Slowwves are a band from Bangkok that make shoegaze full of big yearning melancholy. Their vocalist sings with a similar emotional tenor as someone like Liz Harris or Hope Sandoval (two of my all-time favorite singers). I found this song on YouTube last year when it had like 2k views and it seems like it's blown up a ton since then, good for them! I'm sure the beautiful gauzy music video helped too. They deserve it - they've put out a bunch more good songs since, and I can't wait to hear whatever they do next.

Jamie Weil - Grief (link)

The writer Emily Zhou shared this artist on Bluesky the other day and I was really impressed. She makes really pretty folk/rock with lovely guitar playing and sweet emotive singing. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Adrianne Lenker's solo stuff. The fact that she only has 6 monthly listeners on Spotify feels like a crime!!

Underworld - Cherry Pie (link)

Unreal track, takes me on such a journey! I can't believe how anthemic and huge every little bit of the song sounds and it builds up so much beautiful, life affirming tension. When I listen to this song loud enough it feels like the best music ever made.

LUCY - Make My Bed (link)

It's been hard for me to sell LUCY to anyone in my actual life.. He makes really strange and sincere outsider pop that feels vaguely Drain Gang adjacent. I totally understand how aesthetically annoying he can be, especially since this album was made entirely with primitive MIDI beats, but his unabashed & uncomplicated hope and wistfulness is kind of a balm for me in these bleak times.

Sam Wilkes - Descending (Frue) (link)

This is the most peaceful jazz song I heard last year, sounds like sinking into a couch with the window open on a cool spring evening and feeling the breeze on your face.
