2024-06-04 21:33:21 +0000 UTCI know that quality of life for Pacific Islander communities and the issues they are facing as the most vulnerable to current environmental changes is not an issue that many in the US are well educated about, but it is still incredibly disappointing to hear an ad from you guys for a company whose fundamental mission is taking fresh drinking water and moving it out of and away from the Pacific Islands.

2024-06-04 19:10:58 +0000 UTCTo take fresh drinking water from Viti Levu, bottle it, and ship it overseas for profit, to sell to consumers who already have many sources available for safe freshwater for daily use and drinking, while many Pacific Islanders struggle with basic access to freshwater and drinking water, is a business model that carries the legacy of resource colonialism. I think unethical is maybe the nicest way to put it.

2024-06-04 19:02:38 +0000 UTCDoing ads for Fiji water is giving me the ick. Water is life. Many Pacific islands have limited fresh water. Droughts are not uncommon in Oceania... Becoming more common and more severe... As rising ocean waters are increasing the salinity of the land and turning many a toll freshwater lenses brackish (salty) ... Freshwater depleted, unreliable, expensive... Those who do not have enough money to pay for water are forced to go without or turn to unsafe, disease-bearing sources... On high islands such as Viti Levu in Fiji it may be abundant but not suitable for drinking or other uses... Fiji Water (a company founded in 1996 and now headquartered in Los Angeles) has started exporting water from Viti Levu, filling bottles and shipping them overseas to wealthy countries where consumers can buy half a liter of Fijian water for three US dollars or more.
