Your thoughts on upcoming NJB videos
Added 2021-04-28 00:30:50 +0000 UTCHello lovely Patreon supporters!
So I've just finished my stroads video and it's doing ridiculous well, with over 100K views in 24 hours. That might just be a new record for the channel!
I'm now looking at what videos to work on next, and I thought I'd ask for your feedback.
Logic would dictate that I continue with the Strong Towns series, due to its popularity, but I want to take a bit of a break to explore some new subjects, plus I think the next Strong Towns video will take a few weeks to script-write, film, and research anyway.
My full list of "future" videos is over 200 long, but I'd be curious about your thoughts on these topics that I have started (either script-writing or filming):
- The car-replacement bicycle: the Bakfiets
Continuing on my series of Dutch bicycles (after my omafiets video), I want to talk about the bakfiets cargo bikes. About how they're used everywhere here by people with small children, and about how we never needed a car after buying one in Toronto (which surprised us). - If you don't drive to work, you don't need a car (how carshare services work)
My wife and I have used car sharing services since 2003, and we've generally taken the view that if you live in a city, and you don't need to drive to work, then you don't need to own a car. I don't think most people realize how easy car sharing services have become, and how they can be used even for weekend trips. It's not like renting a car! - Suburbs that don't suck
There's this common misconception in the comments of my videos that there is a problem with suburbs, but it's not suburbs that are the problem, but rather car-dependent suburbs. It just so happens that the only suburbs that have been legal to build in the US and Canada for about 70 year are car-dependent. So I'd like to feature Dutch suburbs (in particularly Vathoorst in Amersfoort and Houten, as well as the "streetcar suburbs" of North America) to show how to do suburbs right. - Parking
This will actually have to be a series because there's so much to talk about. Such as Donald Shoup's book The High Cost of Free Parking, as well as things like minimum parking requirements, and how they've ruined so many cities. Knocking down buildings to build parking lots, the history of parking charges, and what Amsterdam is doing to remove parking or make it very expensive. - Agenda Amsterdam Autoluw
GroenLinks in Amsterdam ran on a platform of removing 10,000 parking spaces ... and won the election! They put in place a plan to make most of the inner city nearly car-free. I promised in my 3rd video that I would cover this topic and talk about some of the specific things that Amsterdam is planning to remove cars from the city. - How I got interested in urban planning (and why I hate Houston)
There's actually an interesting story about how I got interested in urban planning, and it all started with me trying to walk 800m in Houston. This video will need to be made at some point, because it was a critical turning point and, in a way, the channel "started" there. - Why the Dutch don't wear bicycle helmets
I really didn't want to make this video. Then I was going to make it Patreon-only. Now I think it needs to be made (though I will probably not read the comments :) ) - The 15-minute city
There's a lot of talk about building cities where you can get everything you need with 15 minutes of walking or cycling (not even public transit). Most of the Netherlands basically is the "15 minute city" already, so it would be interesting to show how that works. - Blatant racism in US urban planning
It has to be made eventually. Some of the earliest zoning and redlining maps in the US literally said things like "too many negros". It's brutal. Robert Moses made his bridges too low so that buses (mostly used by black citizens) couldn't use his new parkways. I don't even want to get into subtle racism US urban planning: there's enough blatant racism to fill a video. - How the Dutch got their cycle paths
Bicycle Dutch already made this video with this title (so I would obviously change it ;) ), so I would normally not do it. But the fietsersbond (the Dutch cycling union) has asked me to make it, and most people don't realize that in the 1970s, Amsterdam wasn't really a cycling city, so it's a story that should probably be told again.
Anyway, I honestly don't know which video I'll release next, so I think it's a good opportunity to get some discussion going here. Is there anything above that interests you? Do you have questions about anything above? Is there a particular topic you'd like to see? Or do you want me to just riff off of Strong Towns forever? :)
Let me know in the comments!
Thanks,
Jason
