Diminished Lesson!

How to use diminished arpeggios in the blues. There's some lick examples at around 7:00. I will post the tabs and notation for these in my next post. Enjoy!

Yes you're right. I miss spoke

Hi Jack, at around 4:05 and 4:11 you mention a B7b9 chord, should that be an A7b9 chord in order to get the Bb dim7?

Vaughn Davis

Awesome lesson, ties perfectly in with your Dominant arpeggio lesson and the private lesson you gave me on Diminished chords.

Kyle Harris

You could play A diminished to get back to the A7 chord. That would outline going from D7 to D#dim which is a pretty common chord movement to go back to the 1 chord. D#dim and A dim are inversions of one another so they function the same way

Jack Ruch

Hi Jack. Thanks for this insight. So a Bb dim works on the 1 to 4 chord movement? Would one use a G# dim to return from 4 back to 1?

Justin Roberts

It's really just the top 4 notes of an A7(b9) chord, which just happens to also be a diminished 7th chord. It's best to think of it as an A altered dominant chord that resolves to D. But seeing the diminished shapes is helpful for visualizing it around the fretboard.

Jack Ruch

... or is it b/c the Bbdim7 is also a Gdim7, which is the dominant 7 of A? Arrgghh....

Marc P.

Yes, same here. Excellent lesson. Finally, I've found some tasty diminished licks that I can incorporate into my vocabulary. Thank you very much, Jack. I am not sure I fully understand why a Bb dim7 works over A7 (as opposed to a G#dim7 which would be in the key of A), but it does sound great and that's what counts. :)

This is the good stuff, Jack! Appreciate the lesson. The diminished sound is so fun and spicy, but it's a bit weird to use. Happily it's starting to sink in bit. Take care, man!

pheeewww! Ok back to practicing now... also FYI, i've been working on your track "Still Crazy"... trying to get those nice runs you have there, and understand how its working over the chords, esp the part where it goes from G-B7-B7-Emin, that run you have there and that little awesome weird sound you have going from Emin to A9 (right after the 'still crazy after all these years' lyrics melody line) .. :D I guess my ears just get attracted to those inbetween runs and fills or lets say the extra good stuff which you play so well. Thanks man!

Romong Lepcha

That is exactly right!

Jack Ruch

Absolutely! Thank you

Jack Ruch

Great stuff Jack as always. Thanks for doing this, I've been trying to figure out Diminished stuff and those inbetween stuff for a long time, i feel like its slowly (very slowly) starting to click... I had a quick qustion, so would it be safe to say that if we are going from 1 to 4 chord change, then we can hit the diminished lick from 3rd, 5th or the 7th of the Root? which will add a new note, which is the sharp of the root OR flat of the 2 ? not sure if I am making sense, but my brain is kinda clicking that way... just wanna confirm :D

Romong Lepcha

YES! This is precisely the kind of lesson that I’ve been hoping to see from you! The way you so smoothly and perfectly incorporate diminished licks and arpeggios into your lead lines has inspired me so much to start learning how to incorporate that into my own playing! Looking forward to digging into this lesson! Thanks for everything, Jack! You are amazing!
