WHO AM I? | The Sopranos S6 Ep.8 "Johnny Cakes" | UNCUT REACTION

Another thing I think is interesting is that I don't think we see any male role models at all in AJ's life besides Tony and his friends. I don't recall seeing many non-family female role models in Meadow's life either, but Carmela unlike Tony is able to be candid about the fact that she wants a different type of life for Meadow, and she does tell her daughter this frequently. Tony can't do this because it would require concretely acknowledging not just to himself, but to his son, that he is a very bad man. I fear this scene in the parking lot could be the closest that we get.

I also think that Tony totally missed the point with what AJ was attempting to communicate when he brings up The Godfather. Like you said, in his mind, what he sees in the mobster movies is what his father does. Tony *is* the Godfather in his son's eyes. So when they watch the movie together and Tony says that his favorite scene is the one where some character avenges his father, in AJ's mind it's not just about the scene. To him, that is what Tony values, it's the type of thing he would do, and it's the type of thing that he would want his own son to do. Tony can say whatever he wants about how Junior is none of AJ's concern and that he's glad that he is a good guy, but the problem is that AJ genuinely admires his father and wants to be close to/approved by him. AJ feels like Tony is a good guy, and everything from the things he hears about his dad to Tony's own behaviors paints a picture of a very different type of man than the type of man that is in AJ's nature to become. Tony can't even say he's glad that AJ wasn't able to go through with killing Junior without in the same breath insulting him for it.
