FAMILY FIGHT NIGHT | The Sopranos S6x13 "Soprano Home Movies" | UNCUT REACTION

To clarify, in the story that Janice told, Jonny Soprano shot Livia in the hair (not Junior’s goomar) to shut her up complaining. Junior’s goomar was who Janice and Tony heard the story from because she and Junior were the other two people in the car. This is why I think Tony is so incensed; he wants to believe that his father was perfect and that his mother was the devil, when in reality Johnny was neglectful and abusive to his family to the point of mock-executing his own wife, in front of other people, over nothing. I can never get over the fact that Tony is the only person who is reacting somewhat appropriately to this story (as opposed to laughing hysterically like even Carmela does). It must do something to him to sense the total lack of regard that anybody has for his mother, but at the same time not wanting to empathize with her.

I think the real brilliance of this episode comes from the question that's posed when Tony comes out of the coma: can he change and become a better person? He tries to adopt a new outlook on life for the remainder of 6A, but his spiteful behaviour towards Christopher, as well as his pursuit of "extracurricular activities", indicate that he'll probably never truly change. 6B opens by definitively answering the question. Tony has a chance to let go of the vindictive traits that he learned from Livia and to break the cycle of toxicity in his family line (the reason for the episode title and references to their childhood). This is probably the biggest challenge towards his new outlook, and he fails. He is simply unwilling to change, and he basically brings Bobby to hell with him. The ending with him lifting his daughter after being forced to kill another father is definitely heartbreaking.
