Judgment Commentary! | The Rising of the Shield Hero | Episode 15 "Raphtalia"

Comments

Idol Rabiers Personality ( with details from the Light Novel) He is an amply proud fanatic of the Church of the Three Heroes and has a twisted logic in his belief. He hates and looks down on demi-humans, taking sadistic pleasure in their suffering, even children. His torture knows no bounds, as he is willing to torture any allies or believers of the Shield Hero, including his own kind. He was an abusive master of the slaves and had no qualms on readily killing his own soldiers for advantage. He was also a great coward, as shown when he begged for mercy (mostly from Raphtalia) when he had never granted any mercy to anyone. He doesn't care for anything or anyone but himself. In his maniacal thirst for killing the Shield Hero, he comes to the point of releasing in the middle of the town an ancient monster sealed ages prior in an obelisk, which led to his own death and the carnage of the town people. He is a fanatic through and through. Belonging to one of the fanatic factions of the Cult of Three Heroes, he believes that torturing and killing demi-humans is a "service" to his God, and also killing the "Devil of the Shield" will assure him a place in Heavens. After the first Wave, he purchased the survivors of Lurorona village (Raphtalias Village) and tortured the demi-human children in an underground dungeon beneath his mansion. He took a diabolical pleasure in their suffering, which led to the mental breakdown and even death of many, which is legally against the law of the land (torturing the slave is forbidden).

There is a good reason as for why you didn't think Naofumi would talk her down, and that's because that's a sudden and very drastic change from the source, more so than any of the minor changes and time skips thus far. The novels also had a "revenge is immoral and probably bad" message, but that message was followed by Naofumi thinking "I don't care though, she helped me, if she wants to kill this guy, then I want to help her do it," after which Raphtalia stabbed him with BOTH of her swords before kicking him out the window herself. On a related note, Idol recognized Raphtalia a lot earlier than when she had the chance to finish him off, in the beginning of the fight I believe, and he was quite hype to once more see her "broken and crying." The backstory itself, Idol was actually her third owner, the first two did treat her kind of well, but sold her off because of her nightly screaming routine. As for why they where "specifically honed in on the shield hero," demi-human nations (and presumably demi-humans in general) worship the shield hero (and not any of the other heroes), so in a way I guess it's kind of like an American child saying they want to marry Jesus? I'm not sure if that is more or less wierd but... Raphtalia was also there when Rifana died in the novels, and saw Idol move her dead body, and was shocked by how cold she had gotten, after which Idol continued torturing Raphtalia, with Rifana's rotting body still around, while also teasing her about her dead friend as well as showing crystal ball projections of the ruined village for a bit of extra flare. As such she didn't rush to save her after helping Keel, but rather, before they helped him, she led them to Rifana's skeleton and told them about her. There were also only one remaining slave in the basement (Keel) from what I remember, but a LOT of skeletons, most if not all of which were children because Idol is such a wholesome gentleman. Edit: it was confirmed in the novels when they went over the backstory that, they killed only the men. They sold the women and children into slavery, which is honestly more disturbing than killing all of the adults considering the implications but... Edit Again: Funny that about the T-Rex, Naofumi's immediate reaction to the breaking seal was. "... the stone shattered, and cracks appeared in the sky much like the waves, and from that rifted a creature came crawling out, and, yup, it's a dinosaur ..." so he had pretty much the same reaction as you did, (aside from the part where he was also somewhat worried for his life but).
