Working In A Beauty Salon - Part 2

OTHER PARTS | ALL STORY LIST

Stepping out into the bright afternoon light, Hugo couldn’t help but feel as if he were seeing the world for the first time. His hair, now soft and artfully layered, caught the sun’s rays and shimmered like spun gold. Every strand seemed to signal a fresh start—a stark contrast to the harsh, worn-out image of his past.

The cool breeze teased the edges of his new style, and he ran a tentative hand through it, marveling at the transformation. It wasn’t just about looking different; it was the subtle promise of change. The anxiety and uncertainty that had haunted him for so long were giving way to cautious optimism. His recent decision to leave behind the dreariness of the hardware store, and the unexpected opportunity to work as the salon’s in-house maintenance man, felt like a turning point in his life.

Walking alongside Bella as they made their way from the salon’s lustrousentrance, Hugo stole a glance at his sister. Her eyes, warm and knowing, reflected a mixture of pride and relief. Bella had been his steadfast anchor through the worst of times, and in that moment, he felt a surge of gratitude so deep that it almost brought tears to his eyes.

“Bella,” he began softly, his voice carrying the weight of newfound determination, “thank you. I don’t think I could have made it without you. You always knew when I needed a nudge in the right direction.”

Bella’s smile was gentle and assuring. “You always had it in you, Hugo. I just reminded you of what you’re capable of.”

Her words echoed in his heart as they continued down the busy street. Each step was lighter than the last, as if the simple act of embracing change had unburdened him from years of doubt. Hugo’s mind drifted to the salon—the place that had not only given him a stylish new look but also a chance at rebuilding his life.

The morning light filtered through the thin curtains of Hugo’s small apartment, casting a soft glow across the room. His alarm had gone off earlier than usual, but he was already awake, staring at the ceiling, processing the strange turn his life had taken.

A job at a salon.

It was the last place he ever expected to find himself, yet here he was, about to start his first day.

Hugo swung his legs over the bed, rubbing his eyes before standing up. He moved with quiet efficiency, heading to the bathroom to wash his face, the cold water jolting away any lingering sleep. After brushing his teeth, he faced the small mirror above the sink and instinctively reached for his hair.

Without thinking much, he gathered the dark strands into a bun at the back of his head. It was the easiest way to keep it out of his face, a habit formed from years of working at the hardware store. Back then, long hair in a dusty, labor-intensive environment had been a hassle, so he always tied it up. Now, though, he wondered if this look would fit in at the salon.

Would he stand out too much?

Shaking off the thought, he turned back to his tiny bedroom and grabbed the only work-appropriate clothes he had—a worn-out t-shirt and a pair of faded jeans. They were the same clothes he had worn every day at his old job, tough and durable, but now they looked out of place for a high-end salon.

But what choice did he have? He couldn’t afford new clothes yet.

With a sigh, he slipped into his sneakers—also battered from wear—and grabbed his phone and keys. He took one last look around his apartment before stepping outside, inhaling the crisp morning air.

This was it.

His first day at Lush & Luxe.

As Hugo walked down the street toward Lush & Luxe, the city around him felt different.

A place so far from his past work that it almost felt unreal.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and smiled when he saw Bella’s name on the screen.

“Hey, Bella,” he answered, adjusting his grip on the phone as he walked.

“Hey, little brother!” Bella’s voice was bright and encouraging. “Big first day! How are you feeling?”

“A little nervous,” Hugo admitted. “But also kind of excited. It’s… different.”

Bella laughed. “That’s because it’s not a depressing warehouse filled with grumpy old guys.”

Hugo chuckled. “Yeah, no forklifts or shelves stacked with overpriced tools.”

“I still can’t believe you’re working in a salon,” she said teasingly. “But, honestly, I think this is going to be good for you. And don’t worry—Kate’s there, and Lila seems nice. Just be yourself, work hard, and try not to break anything on your first day.”

“Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence,” he said dryly.

“Hey, I believe in you! You’ve got this, Hugo,” Bella assured him. “I just wanted to call and say good luck.”

Hugo’s chest tightened slightly with warmth. His sister always had his back.

“Thanks, Bella. I’ll call you later and let you know how it goes.”

“Looking forward to it! Now go make me proud!”

She hung up, and Hugo pocketed his phone.

The nerves came creeping back as he turned the corner and spotted the familiar Lush & Luxe sign, its elegant gold lettering standing out against the sleek black storefront. The salon’s glass windows gleamed under the morning sun, displaying the pristine interior—a world of beauty and sophistication that still felt foreign to him.

Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door.

The scent of lavender and citrus greeted him immediately, along with the soft hum of hairdryers and gentle chatter from the staff preparing for the day. The shinyfloors, the neatly arranged styling stations, and the rows of colorful hair products felt like another world compared to the dusty, tool-filled aisles of his old job.

Hugo swallowed hard, suddenly feeling very out of place.

He adjusted his posture, trying not to look awkward as he stepped inside. His rough, casual clothes felt even more out of place here, surrounded by the effortlessly stylish employees.

Then, he spotted Kate near the reception desk.

She noticed him right away and grinned. “Well, well, look who actually showed up.”

Hugo let out a breath and smiled back. “Yeah. I figured I’d give it a shot.”

Kate motioned for him to come closer. “C’mon, Lila wants to go over your duties. You ready?”

Was he ready? He wasn’t sure.

But he nodded anyway.

At the back of the salon, near a sleek office with frosted glass doors, stood Lila. She was reviewing something on a tablet, her dark curls framing her face as she glanced up and spotted Hugo approaching.

"Right on time," she said with a small smile, setting her tablet aside. "Good start."

Hugo gave a nervous nod. "Yeah, uh… thanks. Ready to work."

Lila leaned against the desk, arms crossed. "Alright, let’s go over your duties."

She motioned toward the salon floor, pointing at different areas as she spoke.

"You’re going to handle basic maintenance—fixing leaky sinks, changing light bulbs, making sure the hot water doesn’t cut out mid-hair wash. You know, all the little things that keep the place running smoothly."

Hugo listened attentively, nodding along. So far, it sounded manageable.

"Also," Lila continued, her eyes twinkling with amusement, "you might get asked to help move things around. Some of our stylists think they can rearrange furniture every other week and then realize the styling stations weigh a ton."

Kate snickered from the side. "Yeah, don’t be surprised if you’re the designated heavy lifter around here."

"Got it," Hugo said with a small grin. "Lifting and fixing things. I can handle that."

"Good." Lila’s smile lingered for a second before she gave him a once-over, eyes flickering from his rough t-shirt and jeans to his worn-out sneakers.

"One more thing," she said, her voice still light but firm. "Next time, try dressing a little neater."

Hugo stiffened slightly, glancing down at himself. "Oh, uh… yeah. Sorry about that. I just… don’t have much right now."

Lila’s expression softened a little. "I get it," she said, then gave him an encouraging nod. "Just do your best. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just clean and put-together. You’re part of the salon now, and presentation matters."

Hugo exhaled, nodding. "I understand. I’ll figure something out."

"Good." Lila clapped her hands together. "Now, let’s get you started. There’s a sink in the back that’s been acting up, and I think this is the perfect test for our new handyman."

Lila led Hugo toward the back of the salon, where a row of hair-washing stations gleamed under the soft lighting. The black leather chairs were sleek and modern, perfectly positioned under curved ceramic basins.

"This one’s the problem," Lila said, pointing to the second sink. "The water pressure has been inconsistent, and sometimes it doesn’t drain properly. Kate usually fiddles with it, but we need a real fix."

Kate scoffed. "Hey, I did my best! Wiggling pipes and poking things works sometimes."

Hugo chuckled, rolling up his sleeves. "Let’s see what’s going on."

He crouched down, assessing the plumbing beneath the sink. Years of working in a hardware store had given him enough experience with tools and repairs, even if he wasn’t a professional plumber. He checked the pipes, feeling around for leaks, before turning on the water to test the flow.

Lila and Kate stood nearby, watching curiously.

"So, what do you think?" Lila asked.

"Looks like a minor clog and maybe a loose connection here," Hugo muttered, tightening a valve. "Shouldn’t be too hard to fix."

Kate leaned against the counter, smirking. "Look at you, all professional and stuff."

Hugo just grinned. "Hey, I gotta prove I’m useful, right?"

Lila nodded approvingly. "Exactly. And if you keep this up, we’ll keep you around for more than just fixing sinks."

He paused at that, glancing up. "More?"

She smiled but didn’t elaborate. "Let’s start with this. If you need anything, we have a small maintenance kit in the storage room."

"Got it," Hugo said, standing up. "I’ll take care of this and let you know when it’s working properly."

Lila gave him an approving nod before heading back to the front, leaving Hugo with Kate.

Kate nudged his arm. "Not bad, newbie. You might just survive your first day."

Hugo chuckled, but inside, he felt a small wave of relief. He had been nervous about fitting in, but this—this, he could handle.

Now, he just had to figure out what Lila meant about keeping him around for more than just maintenance.

Lila led Hugo toward the back of the salon, where a row of hair-washing stations gleamed under the soft lighting. The black leather chairs were sleek and modern, perfectly positioned under curved ceramic basins.

Hugo chuckled, but inside, he felt a small wave of relief. He had been nervous about fitting in, but this—this, he could handle.

Now, he just had to figure out what Lila meant about keeping him around for more than just maintenance…

After about an hour of work, Hugo wiped his hands on a rag and stood up, satisfied. The sink was fixed, draining properly, and the water pressure had returned to normal. He tested it a couple more times to be sure before calling Kate over.

"All done," he said, stretching his arms. "Shouldn’t give you any more trouble."

Kate turned on the tap, watching the water flow smoothly down the drain. "Well, would you look at that? The newbie actually knows what he’s doing."

Hugo chuckled. "Glad to impress."

Kate gave him an approving nod before her eyes flickered down to his worn-out t-shirt and faded jeans. The once-black fabric of his shirt had turned into more of a dark gray, and his jeans had small frays near the knees. His sneakers looked like they had survived a battle with time itself.

"Alright, I gotta say it," Kate smirked, crossing her arms. "You seriously need new clothes, dude."

Hugo shifted uncomfortably. "Yeah, I know," he muttered. "Lila already said something about that."

Kate raised an eyebrow. "Then why are you still dressed like an extra from a bad warehouse job?"

He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Because I don’t exactly have money to go on a shopping spree, Kate."

Kate’s expression softened slightly. "Right… makes sense." She tapped her chin in thought for a moment before grinning. "Tell you what—when we finish up here, I’ll take you shopping. Nothing crazy, just a few things so you don’t look like you wandered in by accident."

Hugo hesitated. "I don’t know, Kate… I can’t really afford—"

"Relax," she waved him off. "I know a couple of places with decent stuff that won’t bankrupt you. And if you’re nice, maybe I’ll even spot you for a shirt or two."

He frowned. "I don’t want charity."

"It’s not charity. It’s an investment in not looking like a total mess," she teased. "C’mon, you’re gonna be working in a place full of stylish women. You really wanna be the odd one out?"

Hugo sighed, knowing she had a point. His current look screamed “out of place” in the sleek, modern salon. He didn’t need to be fancy—just presentable.

"Fine," he relented. "But nothing too flashy, alright?"

Kate grinned. "Deal. Now, let’s get through the rest of your shift. Then, it’s makeover time."

Hugo finished the rest of his shift, handling a few minor tasks like tightening a loose cabinet door and replacing a flickering lightbulb. As the day wound down, he felt a growing sense of accomplishment—his first day at Lush & Luxe hadn’t been so bad after all.

By the time his shift ended, Kate was already waiting by the front desk, twirling her keys around her finger.

"Alright, newbie," she smirked. "Time to upgrade your wardrobe."

Hugo sighed but followed her outside. The sun had started to set.

"You sure about this?" he asked as they walked toward a row of boutique shops.

"Absolutely," Kate replied. "Trust me, a little effort in how you dress goes a long way, especially in a place like Lush & Luxe. You don’t have to be a fashion model, but you should at least look like you belong."

Hugo glanced down at himself. "So, what exactly are we looking for?"

Kate tapped her chin. "Something clean, stylish but simple. We’re aiming for ‘effortlessly put-together,’ not ‘I raided my dad’s closet.’"

Hugo snorted. "Great, let’s hope we can find that on a budget."

Kate led him into a small but trendy boutique, where racks of stylish yet casual clothing filled the space. It wasn’t a high-end designer store, but it definitely had a different vibe from the thrift shops Hugo usually relied on.

"Alright," Kate said, scanning the shelves. "Let’s start with some button-ups and fitted t-shirts—something that actually looks like it belongs in a salon."

She pulled a light-blue button-up shirt from the rack and held it against Hugo. "Hmm… yeah, this could work. Try it on."

Hugo took the shirt and disappeared into the dressing room, feeling a little out of his element. He changed quickly and stepped out, tugging at the sleeves awkwardly.

Kate gave him a once-over and nodded approvingly. "See? Instant improvement. You actually look like someone who has their life together."

Hugo glanced at himself in the mirror. The shirt fit well, and though it was simple, it did make him look… different.

Better.

"Alright, not bad," he admitted.

Kate grinned. "Told ya. Now, let’s get you some better jeans and maybe a new pair of shoes. Those sneakers have seen some things."

After another half-hour of shopping, Hugo left with a few new shirts, a pair of slim-fit jeans, and a fresh pair of casual shoes that didn’t look like they had been through a construction site.

After wrapping up their shopping, Hugo and Kate headed to a nearby cozy café, where Bella was already waiting for them at an outdoor table. She waved as they approached, her expression bright with curiosity.

“Well, well, look at you,” Bella teased, giving Hugo an exaggerated once-over. “Did Kate finally convince you to dress like a functioning adult?”

Hugo rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide the small smirk forming on his lips. “Yeah, yeah. I got the ‘dress better’ lecture from both of you today.”

Kate laughed as she pulled out a chair. “And he actually listened! Progress!”

Bella leaned in, playfully tugging at Hugo’s button-up shirt. “I like it. You look… polished. But there’s still something missing.”

Hugo frowned. “What now?”

Bella gestured toward his hair, still tied up in a neat bun. “Let it down.”

He blinked. “What? Why?”

“Because you have great hair, Hugo,” Bella said matter-of-factly. “And if you’re working at a salon, you might as well embrace it. The bun is fine, but let’s see how you look without it.”

Kate nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. You’ve got that natural wavy look going on—it’d fit right in with the salon’s aesthetic.”

Hugo hesitated. He had kept his hair tied up for so long that he almost felt weird wearing it loose. But with both of them staring expectantly, he sighed and reached up, pulling out the hair tie.

As he ran a hand through his now-free chestnut waves, Bella and Kate exchanged grins.

“See?” Bella said, nudging Kate. “I told you. He actually looks kinda—”

“Pretty?” Kate finished with a smirk.

Hugo groaned. “Oh, come on.”

Kate shrugged. “Hey, it’s a compliment! You have soft features, great hair… Honestly, if I didn’t know you, I’d assume you worked at the salon as a stylist, not the handyman.”

Bella nodded in agreement. “You’re gonna turn heads, little brother.”

Hugo sighed but couldn’t ignore the small boost of confidence he felt. Maybe they were exaggerating, but… maybe not.

“All I wanted was a job,” he muttered, shaking his head.

“And now you’ve got one,” Kate said with a grin. “A job that just so happens to be surrounded by beauty, style, and a bunch of women who are definitely going to have fun with you.”

Bella raised an eyebrow. “Speaking of which… how’s Lila?”

Hugo’s stomach did a small flip. “She’s… nice. Professional. She wants me to dress better.”

Kate smirked knowingly. “She’s interested.”

Hugo scoffed. “She’s my boss.”

“Doesn’t mean she won’t have fun teasing you,” Bella pointed out. “And honestly, with the way you’re looking now… don’t be surprised if the whole salon starts treating you like their little project.”

Hugo groaned again, running a hand down his face. “What did I get myself into?”
