There's been a lot of very good discussion about Mistress Lori over in the site's comment section, but I don't think there's any good argument to be made that Duane is acting heroically here. Of course he has a righteous cause, but he's letting his own hatred and hunger swallow it up, and acting little better than the forces he claims are doing such harm.
And I think if you look at the rest of his behaviour in relation to him finally snapping here, you see what was really driving him. It wasn't about saving some waterladies or stopping the storm or getting back on track after the Silver; there has been ample opportunity for all this. In reality, kicking that door down was about venting his misery on a soft target.
