A very generous assessment from Duane. I don't think he has the stomach for his usual harsh condemnations, not anymore. Maybe later, after his Harsh Condemnations health bar has refilled.

This is my assessment: Duane is closer to understanding Quigley as a person than Jivi and Sette. Duane is closer in the sense that he understands Quigley's motivations and feelings. Quigley certainly does care about Matty, and when he lets his guard down, it comes out. But only when he lets his guard down. Sette is right that none of that excuses his behavior and Quigley should be fucking ashamed of himself. Jivi is wrong that Quigley doesn't care, but he's right that everything Quigley does is intended to make him seem as if he doesn't care. And in some ways, Jivi is right that this "matters" more. Duane is also correct that Quigley's lashing-out at Matty is due to two conflicting impulses; he cares about Matty, but resents the burden he represents. He is also correct in calling Quigley a coward. Duane may be correct in the literary analysis sense, but Jivi and Sette are not giving Quigley the Snape treatment (the "Snape Treatment" being that all is forgiven if it turns out he has noble intentions). And in the pragmatic sense, Jivi and Sette are correct: Quigley's feelings and intentions aren't worth shit if he's constantly undermining it with casual cruelty toward his son.

I agree with Duane's Quigley analysis. At least if I'm correctly interpreting his meaning of "escape." Quigs is not going to be around much longer. Maybe he doesn't want Matti to miss him.
