In the same way we saw Siya explain her looming sacrifice to Matty in terms that we later saw did not match her true feelings, First Sette lies to herself and to others about it. How would she be able to have stayed with her sib otherwise? How would she have retained any of her sanity? Only now that she's discovered she can outright tear away all that trauma, does the truth come out. And perhaps maybe the trauma too, in a sec.

Perhaps this flashback occurs roughly around the purge of lions by the Gefendur, after the burgeoning Ssaelit religion incorporated lions into its iconography. This tracks with (at least) 12 years after Ssael entered the khert. Did he intend for this to happen, and the peace between lions and men to be broken? Poor First!Sette. P.S. is that line in the last bubble meant to be "as all its children do" (instead of "at")?

They ate the condemned, then were eaten themselves, because they were not "good enough" for lack of a better phrase. Feels like a wee nudge at the line in the book of Ssael, "Feed the lions your last sins", though I'm sure we're still far off from understanding it. But there's something seemingly quite intentional about that.
