We have the power to push and pull in ways the camera can not.
That's my constant motive as I work from a reference such as this. I want to push the shapes, gestures, and values further. Sometimes I push things a little too far — so I just pull it back a little.
With this drawing I did push everything, but most significantly the shapes of the fabric. I wanted to convey a lot of movement. That's also why I left the legs somewhat vague and airy. It helps to imply they they're not so still. Plus, this focuses the contrast of value upwards — further accentuating the gesture. At least, that was my thinking.
