49-The Shadow of the UNSC

Three days had passed since the devastating battle of Kashyyyk. The Resolute, still undergoing repairs after the fighting, was quietly orbiting near Lothal. Although the victory had been crucial, the taste was bittersweet: the data recovered from the Covenant supercarrier showed not only their strategy on Kashyyyk, but something far more disturbing. Hidden bases, infiltrations on key planets, and covert operations indicated that the enemy was more deeply rooted in the galaxy than anyone had imagined.

One of the planets marked on the recovered maps was Cantonica, a world famous for its dazzling golden deserts and luxury cities, known for endless entertainment and excess. But beneath the facade of glitz and glamour, something dark was brewing. Unusual energy readings in the deserts and activity that did not match any recorded civilian operations were clear signs that the Covenant had a presence there.

At the heart of the Resolute, the tactical room was steeped in a tense atmosphere. A detailed hologram of Cantonica hung in the air, illuminating the faces of the officers present. Prestone Cole, arms crossed and gaze fixed on the map, listened to Serina's analysis.

"Captain," Serina began, projecting a new layer of information onto the hologram. "These are the most promising readings we have identified. In the northern desert of Cantonica there is an underground complex with constant energy emissions and traffic patterns that do not match any civilian or business operations on the planet. These signals are consistent with Covenant technology."

Cole nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving the hologram. "What do we know about the complex?"

"Not much," Serina admitted. “The facility appears to be designed to avoid detection, but the energy emissions are too significant to ignore. It could be a research facility, a command post, or something even more dangerous.”

Cole took a deep breath. “If they’re operating on a neutral planet like Cantonica, they have a strategic advantage we can’t afford. Not after Kashyyyk. If those facilities aren’t taken out now, we risk this being the start of a much larger offensive.”

“The mission will be delicate,” Serina added, her usual clinical tone. “The planet has strict neutrality laws. We can’t allow our actions to be traced back to the UNSC. This must be a completely covert operation.”

Cole frowned. “There’s no room for error.”

Cole turned to an officer at his side. “Bring Carter in. I want to discuss this with him in person.”

Moments later, the doors to the tactical room swung open, and the leader of Noble Team, Carter-A259, strode in. His armor was immaculate, and his face, though battle-hardened, reflected respect for his superior.

“Captain Cole,” Carter saluted, giving a brief military nod. “Did you call me?”

Cole pointed to the hologram of Cantonica. “Yes, Carter. We have a mission that requires the best hands available. The Covenant is using this planet to operate in secret. We don’t know exactly what they’re doing, but the readings suggest something big. Your team will be tasked with infiltrating, gathering as much information as possible, and destroying that facility.”

Carter nodded, but his eyes narrowed as he studied the hologram. “Cantonica… A world full of eyes and ears. This won’t be easy. Do we have coverage?”

“None,” Cole answered bluntly. “This mission cannot be traced to the UNSC. There will be no reinforcements, no orbital support. You’ll have to rely solely on your team and the resources we bring with you.”

Carter crossed his arms, pondering for a moment. “What do we know about the resistance on the surface?”

“Based on the data extracted from the superfreighter,” Serina interjected, “we expect to find regular Covenant forces: Elites, Jackals, and Grunts. However, the magnitude of the energy emissions suggests there could be something more… larger.”

Carter allowed himself a short sigh. “Understood. What’s our window?”

Cole turned to Serina, who answered immediately. “The optimal window is 48 hours before traffic patterns around the facility change significantly. That’s how long they have to infiltrate, gather data, and destroy the target.”

Carter looked at Cole directly. “And what if we find something we can’t handle with our current forces?”

“Then they handle it anyway,” Cole said, a hardness in his voice that made the weight of the mission clear. "We can't allow this facility to continue operating, Carter. Not after what we've seen on Kashyyyk. I trust your team. Make this work."

The Resolute's hangar hummed with the typical activity of an ongoing mission. The engines of the stealth-modified Pelican hummed softly, as Noble Team made final adjustments to their equipment. The lights of the hangar cast long shadows over the imposing figures of the Spartans, surrounded by the advanced droids that would accompany them on this dangerous mission.

Emile, as usual, was busy sharpening his signature knife. The clank of steel against sharpening stone echoed in the enclosed space. He glanced over at Carter, who was reviewing a tactical hologram of the Cantonica desert, and let out a short but sarcastic laugh.

"So we're being sent to a planet full of rich people, gambling, and expensive drinks to wipe the Covenant's ass," Emile said, lifting his knife to inspect it. “I don’t know about you, but I think this could be fun. A change of pace, don’t you think?”

Kat, who was checking out the hacking systems she would be bringing with her, looked up with an exasperated expression under her helmet. “Keep your focus, Emile. Cantonica isn’t just a fancy planet. If we do anything that draws too much attention, we could get into more trouble than we can handle.”

“Come on, Kat,” Emile replied in a mocking tone. “Since when have you met anyone who won at this job without making a little noise?”

“Controlled noise,” Kat corrected, her tone curt. “Remember, we’re here to take out the Covenant, not become the main show.”

From a corner, Samuel-034, the newest member of the team, adjusted his sniper rifle as he squinted at the interaction. “Let me guess,” he said, his voice laced with mild sarcasm. “We get in, disable their secret toy, and get out before they know we were there. Easy, right?”

“It never is,” Jorge interjected, adjusting his imposing heavy rifle. His tone was low and calm, but his weight in the conversation was palpable. “But if anyone can do it, it’s us. Just stick to the plan and watch your flanks. That planet has more eyes than we’d like.”

Noble Six, who had remained silent as he adjusted his scope, finally spoke up. “And if things get ugly, we do what we do best: improvise. There’s always a way out.”

Carter, who up until that point had been watching, approached the group. His presence commanded immediate attention, and everyone turned to him. “Listen well,” he said, his voice firm but encouraging. "This mission is unlike any we've had before. It's not just a matter of infiltrating and destroying. This is a test, not just for us, but for the UNSC. If we fail, Cantonica could become another Covenant stronghold, and no one will know until it's too late."

“So it’s just like any other mission for us?” Emile asked in a nonchalant tone. Despite the sarcasm, there was a glint of seriousness in his gaze.

“Yes, but with more risk,” Carter replied, ignoring the irony. “This is a chance to show the Covenant that no matter where they hide, we will find them. This isn’t just another job, it’s a message. One we’re not going to send half-heartedly.”

Jorge nodded. “We’ve always been the hammer in the shadows, Carter. It’s good to remind them that we still know how to hit.”

“We’ll make it count,” Noble Six added. “We understand what’s at stake.”

Carter crossed his arms, looking at his team. “Good. One last thing. The Pelican is modified for stealth, but that doesn’t mean they’re invisible. Cantonica is a place full of surveillance, sensors, and opportunists. Stay alert. Serina will provide us with tactical updates, but once you’re on the ground, you’re pretty much on your own. This is the kind of operation where there’s no room for error. Understood?”

“Understood,” they all responded in unison, their voices echoing through the hangar as one.

The Pelican, cloaked in its stealth technology, smoothly ascended from the Resolute’s hangar, leaving behind the mechanical hum of ongoing repairs. The engines barely made a sound, adapted to avoid detection as they streaked across the stars toward Cantonica. Inside, the atmosphere was tense but controlled. Each member of the team checked their weapons and equipment, while the droids remained silent, their sensors glowing with a cold glow.

Carter turned to his companions from the command seat. “This is just the first stage. Once we touch down, the priority is to identify the target and gather as much information as possible. We don’t commit until we know exactly what we’re dealing with. Kat, I want you to get the hacking systems ready. Jorge, you and the droids cover the perimeter.”

“And us?” Emile asked, a smile barely visible behind the reflection of his visor.

“You, Six, and Samuel will be the spearhead. If there’s resistance, I want them neutralized quickly and quietly.” Carter paused before adding. “But remember, this is a covert mission. Noise is the last resort. We can’t afford to expose ourselves on a planet like this.”

“Then it’ll be like walking on eggs,” Samuel muttered, checking his sniper rifle once more. “Perfect.”

“Don’t worry,” Noble Six said, adjusting the explosives in his backpack. “If anyone breaks the eggs, we’ll make sure the Covenant chokes on them.”

Emile let out a dry laugh. “That’s what I like to hear.”

The Pelican passed smoothly through Cantonica’s atmosphere, barely a glimmer in the planet’s night sky. As they neared the desert, the silence inside the ship was total. The Spartans and droids were ready for what awaited them.

“Remember,” Carter said, looking at his team as the ship began its final approach. “We don’t know exactly what we’ll be up against there. So, as always, adaptability and precision. Make this quick and clean. See you at the extraction point.”

The Pelican touched down on the desert sands with a soft rustle, and the side doors swung open. Noble Team and the droids moved forward in formation, their figures quickly disappearing into the desert darkness.

The group moved in tight formation, using the shadows of the taller dunes as cover against the orbital scanners that Kat believed might be monitoring the area. The droids advanced first, their sensors scanning every meter for traps or enemy patrols. Occasionally, one of them would raise a metal arm to stop the team, detecting energy signatures that needed to be avoided.

“Patrol detected, 200 meters east,” a droid reported, projecting a hologram of a small group of Jackals and Grunts surveying the area. “Detection probability: high.”

“We don’t need to fight yet,” Carter said, his tone low but firm. “Surround them. Use the dunes as cover. Emile, Jorge, if anything moves toward us, take it out silently.”

The team carefully circled the patrol, moving like shadows across the uneven terrain. From above, Emile watched the enemy group with his magnified visor, ready to act if anything went wrong. One of the Jackals raised its head, sniffing the air, but before it could alert the others, Emile threw a knife with lethal precision, piercing its neck. The Jackal's body fell silently to the ground, as the rest of the team continued to advance.

After advancing several kilometers, the terrain began to change. What was once endless sand now revealed partially buried metal structures, covered in dust and alien markings. Kat raised her portable scanner, watching the readings carefully.

"We're close," she reported. "Energy readings are intensifying here. These structures are part of a ventilation system for the underground facility. They're using a combination of energy shields and camouflage to stay hidden."

"Entry confirmed?" Carter asked.

“Not exactly,” Kat replied, pointing to a crack in the floor. “But that vent could take us inside if we can neutralize the shields.”

“There’s always a ‘but,’” Jorge muttered, hefting his heavy rifle. “How strong will the resistance be?”

“Probably considerable,” Six replied. “But we didn’t come here to play hide and seek.”

Carter looked at his team, then at the droids. “Let’s plant explosives in those vents. Kat, find a way into the system. Jorge, cover the rear while we work.”

The controlled explosion was enough to blow open the vent without alerting the rest of the Covenant forces. One by one, the team descended the narrow tunnel, their boots clicking against the cold metal. The droids moved silently, scanning every bend and corner.

When they finally emerged into the underground facility, the team found themselves in a wide corridor, lit by the signature purple glow of Covenant technology. Alien symbols covered the walls, and a constant hum filled the air.

“This feels like Reach,” Six muttered, his voice thick with tension. “Fucking déjà vu.”

“I thought so too,” Emile replied, staring at a holographic map Kat had pulled up. “And we all know how that ended. We won’t let it happen again.”

“Focus,” Carter said. “Kat, identify a checkpoint. We need information before we blow this place up.”

“Roger that,” Kat replied, as she plugged her device into the nearest panel. “Give me a moment.”

As Kat worked, Jorge and the droids kept watch down the corridor. From a side access, a door slid silently open, revealing a massive hidden hangar. Inside, a Covenant CRS-class cruiser floated suspended in a gravitational field, protected by active invisibility cloaks. Zealots patrolled the ship, while Hunters guarded the main entrances.

“This explains the energy readings,” Jorge said, pointing toward the ship. “A damn cruiser. How did they manage to hide it here?”

“The same thing they did on Reach,” Carter said, grimacing in frustration. “This isn’t just an outpost. It’s an operations center.”

Kat interrupted from her position. “Not only that. They’re collecting data on various species in the galaxy. They’re doing biological experiments here. They also have records of other target planets. This is much bigger than we imagined.”

The team knew they couldn’t directly attack the cruiser without being detected. Instead, Carter ordered the team to eliminate nearby patrols with complete stealth. Six and Emile moved like shadows, taking out Elites with silent blades while droids disabled automated turrets with electromagnetic discharges.

At a critical moment, a Hunter became suspicious and moved toward the team’s position. Before he could react, Jorge fired a heavy shell straight at his weak point, knocking him down with a boom that echoed throughout the facility.

"We've been spotted," Kat said, watching as the alarms began to ring. "There's no time. Let's plant the explosives and get this information out of here."

With alarms blaring in the hallways and purple lights flashing frantically, Noble Team knew every second counted. The hum of energy shields deactivating behind them mixed with the warning shouts of the Elites created a chaotic environment. The explosives were activated, and the timer ticked relentlessly.

“We have less than ten minutes left!” Kat shouted, her voice clear but charged with urgency as she checked the holographic map projected on her visor. “Follow this route, it will take us straight to the conduit.”

“Droids, take the rear,” Carter ordered, his tone firm. “They cover us while we secure the information.”

Jorge swung his heavy weapon around, loading an explosive round. “Let them try,” he muttered as a patrol of Jackals rounded the corner of the corridor. Before they could raise their shields, Jorge’s shot pulverized them, leaving the walls covered in plasma and fragments of their bodies.

As the team moved forward, the Covenant mobilized their forces. The corridors began to fill with Grunts armed with plasma throwers and Elites with energy swords blocking every exit.

“Contact, left and right,” Noble Six said, adjusting his combat rifle as he fired with precision. One Grunt exploded as a bullet pierced its methane tank, and the shockwave knocked down the other three around it.

Emile, always the first to face danger, charged towards a group of Elites, dodging shots and throwing his knife straight at the neck of one of them. The knife sank with a snap, and the Elite fell to the ground, as Emile used his body as a shield to cover himself from the incoming fire.

“One down! Who’s next!” Emile roared, his voice echoing through the communicators.

“Focus, Emile,” Carter said as he fired his DMR rifle. “This is not a show.”

A Hunter emerged from a side door, its fuel cannon glowing as it aimed at the team. UNSC advance droids moved forward, firing a hail of shells at the behemoth. Though its armor held, one of the droids managed to hit its abdomen with an explosive, causing the Hunter to retreat.

“I need time to reload,” Jorge said, his voice strained as he watched the Hunter prepare to fire.

“Cover me,” Six said, advancing quickly toward the Hunter. Before it could fire, he threw a plasma grenade directly at the enemy’s cannon. The resulting explosion ripped through the Hunter’s body, scattering burning debris across the corridor.

They came to a junction where a group of Zealot Elites had fortified the position with energy shields and auto turrets. The Zealots roared, firing high-powered plasma rifles while rotating turrets launched energy blasts at anything that moved.

“This is going to be tricky,” Kat commented, adjusting her visor to scan the shields. “They’re too strong for a frontal attack. We need to disable those turrets.”

“I’ll go,” Emile said, gripping his knife. “Cover my advance.”

“Don’t do it alone,” Carter said, but Emile was already on the move.

As the others fired to distract the enemy, Emile used the shadows to get close to one of the turrets. With quick, precise movements, he disabled the turret’s energy core before launching himself at an Elite, driving his knife into its skull.

“First turret disabled! Two more!” he shouted as he fired at a Grunt trying to reinforce the line.

Meanwhile, Kat used her hacking device to disable the energy shields. “Ready. Move forward,” she said, as the shields fell and the remaining turrets ran out of power.

Jorge and Six led the charge, firing at anything that stood in their way. Jorge took out two Elites with a single shot from his heavy rifle, while Six threw a frag grenade that eliminated the rest.

With the initial defenses neutralized, the team moved deeper into the facility. However, the pressure was mounting. A contingent of Brutes, led by a Chieftain with a gravity hammer, blocked the path to the exit shaft.

"This is where it gets interesting," Jorge said, raising his weapon.

The Chieftain roared as he charged toward them, his hammer emitting waves of energy that shook the ground. The UNSC droids formed a line, firing volleys of projectiles, but the Chieftain cut them down with ease, crushing two with a single blow.

"Keep your distance!" Carter shouted as he fired at the enemy's flanks.

Kat threw an EMP grenade that disabled the Chieftain's shields, giving Jorge the opportunity to fire an explosive shell that hit him directly in the chest. The blast knocked him down, but it wasn't enough to kill him.

"Leave it to me," Emile said, moving forward quickly. He dodged a blow from the hammer before throwing his knife into the Chieftain's eye, who roared in pain before falling to the ground, finally dead.

As they finally reached the conduit, explosions began to echo behind them. The explosives had begun to detonate, destroying the facility and the Covenant's stealth cruiser.

"Pelican, we need immediate extraction!" Carter shouted as the team began to climb towards the surface.

The remaining droids brought up the rear, holding off the Elites trying to reach them. One of the droids, badly damaged, detonated its core, taking several enemies with it and ensuring the team's exit.

The Pelican descended just as the last member of the team, Six, emerged from the conduit. The doors closed and the ship rapidly ascended, moving away as the facility collapsed in a massive explosion that lit up the night sky over Cantonica.

From the Pelican, Carter watched the destruction as Kat reviewed the data they had recovered. "This isn't just a victory," he said. "This is information that could change the entire war."

"There's still more to do," Six replied, wiping sweat from his visor. "But for now, we can say we did what we had to do."

Noble Team had accomplished their mission, but they knew what they had discovered was only the beginning of a much larger conflict.
