Pandion Lapis, commanding and distinct, alighted from the grand airship. Poatu's dock, the last on the Mirena Leyline, seemed to pause as he made his descent. Adjusting his well-tailored suit, he tapped a feathersteel cylinder, indicating its importance, before passing it to Kori, a trusted member of the Amethyst Company.
Pandion's gesture of handing over the documents in such a public manner earned a roll of Kori's eyes. She noted, with her sharp instincts, those who might've taken a keen interest in the exchange. Experience had taught her that things could spiral into chaos at the most unexpected times.
Drawing Kori aside, Pandion's voice held a hint of concern. "Kori, while it's true that these royal documents are best delivered discreetly, and adventurers might indeed attract less attention than an overt Amethyst operation, the guild Angel’s Sword is...unpredictable."
He hesitated momentarily. "I'm aware of your previous collaboration with Kane, but the guild as a whole, including Rei and Kaede...they have their own way of doing things."
Kori's ears twitched in acknowledgment. "I understand your reservations, Pandion. Kane and I have worked together before, and I trust him. As for the others, I believe in their capabilities. The Angel's Sword guild might be unorthodox, but they get results."
Pandion nodded, seemingly placated. "I trust your judgment. Just ensure the documents reach Eisenstadt safely. And," he added, handing her a small pouch, "if possible, could you get some Gobbocherry cookies along the way? They're for my sister."
Pandion's repeated rants about Angel’s Sword had become almost like white noise to Kori, and she nearly missed him handing her a pouch of coins. "Gobbocherry cookies?" she echoed, unfamiliar with the treat. "I'll be sure to grab some on our return."
Kane, recognizing Kori from their past endeavors, smiled. "It's good to work alongside you again, Kori."
Kori returned the sentiment, "Likewise, Kane. Let's ensure this mission is a success."
Rei stepped forward, her singular blonde tail swaying gracefully behind her. Dressed in a white and red shrine maiden outfit, the garment was a tad unusual for these lands but quite fitting for a Youkai. With her appearance suggesting she was in her late twenties, she greeted the group with a courteous bow. "Greetings, dear customers. I am Rei, and I hope I'll be able to protect you on this mission."
Following Rei, a lively catgirl named Kaede advanced, her tail swishing playfully. Stretching and gazing curiously around, she remarked, "Ah, it's been ages since I left the guild! Feels great to be out and about instead of being cooped up." Tapping her weapon lightly behind her back, she flashed a thumbs-up. "I'm Kaede! Nice to meet you all!" Her attire, a brave top that exposed most of her physique paired with shredded pants, contrasted with Rei's traditional outfit. The blue-blackish long hair with yellow highlights made her stand out even more.
Kane, observing the interactions, couldn't help but smile when his eyes met Kori's. The familiar face brought warmth to his heart. Standing up, he approached with his characteristic heavy steps. "Hello, Kori. It truly gladdens my heart to see you well. I promise to do my utmost to ensure your safety during our journey. As for Kaede and Rei, they're relatively new to the guild, but their promise and enthusiasm are undeniable."
Kori could see the changes in Kane since their last meeting. He had entirely replaced his armor, likely due to the damages from their past endeavors. Kane's meticulously maintained facial hair and the combination of his gray-white hair gave the impression of age. However, Kori knew better; the added scars on his face were a testament to his experiences, not just the passage of time.
Kane's face lit up with genuine concern as he asked, "You had a pleasant trip, I trust?"
Kori took a moment to stretch, the journey on the airship had been long. Adjusting her weapon belt, her fingers brushed against Mallow, the dagger she always carried. The mere touch brought forth a twinge of sorrow. Her thread daggers sat comfortably on her back, and the rapier, which she had vowed to master one day, hung a tad awkwardly at her side.
Stepping fully onto the dock, Kori greeted the group. "Kori, pleased to meet you. The flight was mostly quiet, no bar fights this time. And I hope this mission proves less...exciting than our last, Kane."
Kane nodded, his smile somewhat strained. "I share that sentiment."
Rei's optimism shone through as she chimed in, "It's a straightforward journey to another location. Surely, if it were perilous, they'd have selected more seasoned folks for the task!"
Kaede's spirited demeanor brought a lighter mood to the group. Hands behind her head, she mused aloud, "I mean, a little bit of excitement on the mission shouldn't hurt too much, right?"
She paused, awaiting validation, but the fleeting shadow that crossed Kane's face hinted at memories of past adventures where such words had preceded chaos.
Kori, her voice tinged with nostalgia, responded, “Someday, you’ll learn to appreciate the quiet missions.” Internally, she felt like she was a retired adventurer giving advice that would be heeded to some plucky up and comers. Why do I feel so old? I'm not even twenty-five yet!
The group's path meandered through Poatu's lively streets. The town, positioned strategically at the edge of the Mirena Leyline, thrived on trade and commerce. Cobblestone paths buzzed with activity, and the towering airship docks above added to the town's vibrant ambiance. The scent of Poatu's signature honeygrass bubble tea wafted in the air, its sticky-sweet aroma tempting many a passerby.
As they walked, Pandion handed Kori an additional bag of funds. Noticing Kori's constant scanning of the crowd and the few glances she cut toward him, "You're right. I might stick out a bit here. I'll lay low. Stay safe, and I'll see you in a few weeks." With that, he wandered off, likely in search of some of that enticing honeygrass tea.
Rei's keen eyes darted around the bustling streets, possibly searching for a specific vendor or shop. She then turned to the group, her face alight with a playful grin. "Is everyone prepared for what lies ahead? If you end up needing my food share, I'll have to bill you extra!"
Kaede's ears perked up at the mention of provisions. "I can gather more supplies if necessary. We do have several days of travel, after all," she noted, taking the lead and glancing back at the group expectantly.
While navigating the busy streets of Poatu, the group couldn't help but overhear snippets of a conversation among a group of merchants. Terms like "Mirena" and "Alchemy" floated to their ears.
Kane, ever the pragmatist, advised distractedly, "I'd recommend getting a few extra rations, at least two more than you think you'd need." His gaze, however, was fixed on the merchants, trying to glean more about the unforeseen events they were discussing. Finally, his curiosity got the better of him, and with a friendly demeanor, he approached them.
"Greetings," Kane began with a smile, "We're on a journey and overheard some concerns you were discussing. We're not entirely familiar with the current happenings in this area. Could you shed some light on any issues that might affect our travels?"
One of the merchants, looking rather disheartened, responded, "I was hoping to make a tidy sum selling these military rations in Poatu. But the Mirena Leyline tide this season was peculiar. The honeygrass yield was enormous, causing food prices to plummet. Now I'm saddled with excess stock. Thankfully, I managed to profit from selling alchemical herbs and magical fuel due to the shortage.”
Kane's interest was evident. "Could you explain more about the Leyline tide? Does it influence the crop yield in this manner?"
Before the merchant could answer, Rei, having been listening from a distance, interjected, "Before we dive into that, how many of those rations are you willing to part with?"
Kaede chimed in, her eyes fixated on the rations, "I'd like to purchase some as well."
The merchant scratched his head, a bit overwhelmed. "It's unfortunate timing, to be honest. But I won't say no to sales. Feel free to buy as many as you'd like. I'll invest in dried honeygrass while it's cheap. I've heard it sells well in the Northi capital." He then turned to Kane and responded shortly, “It does for reasons I don’t know of… I’m no farmer.”
Kori eyed the rest clustering around the shop and took a few steps back to make sure at least someone was watching for pickpockets. It’s what she would do when she was younger if she saw this much money changing hands. She called out to Kane, "Grab a few days' worth for me too, will you?"
Rei, having settled on a sizable purchase, beamed at the merchant. "I'll take 30 of them. I trust they're in good condition?"
The merchant, slightly rattled by the flurry of activity, managed a chuckle. "Thirty it is. You've got quite the foresight, miss."
Kaede, on the other hand, quickly bought two rations, handing the merchant the required coin. "Just these for now. I've got more shopping to do." With that, she darted off, calling over her shoulder, "Be right back!"
With a bemused shrug, the merchant handed the additional two rations to the large stack he was preparing for Rei. The excited catfolk girl had run off before he could hand them to her. “Can I trust you to get these to your friend?”
Rei nodded with a smile. “Of course.”
As the merchant finished arranging the rations for Rei, Kane stepped up to purchase his own and Kori’s rations. He also took the opportunity to stock up on a few essentials, healing potions and a restock on his medical kit among them.
Rei, organizing her rations meticulously in her backpack, remarked with a laugh, "Traveling extensively does offer its advantages." With the transactions completed, the group, feeling sufficiently prepared, decided to leave Poatu without further delay.
The adventurers, upon leaving the town, were met with a fork in the road. They unanimously decided to avoid the direct route to Eisenstadt, opting instead for the northern path through the woods. This route, while lesser known, provided the cover they sought. The path was a combination of twisting vines, gnarled trees, and patches of dense forest, intermittently opening up to vast plains.
It wasn't long before the silhouette of Kastie Village appeared on the horizon. However, before they could ponder their next move, an unexpected sight greeted them: a lone frog, perched casually on a tree stump by the roadside.
Rei, ever curious, inquired, "Do we intend to pass through Kastie Village, Dear Customer? Or does the nature of our mission require us to avoid drawing attention?"
Kori's eyes remained fixed on the frog, contemplative. Its presence on the tree stump seemed unusual. However, Rei's question drew her attention back to the matter at hand. "Considering the circumstances," Kori mused, "if word of our mission has already spread and our descriptions are ahead of us, then secrecy is a luxury we no longer possess. For all intents and purposes, we are but travelers on this road."
The frog, almost as if in response, let out an ominous croak that echoed through the stillness.
"Very well," Rei nodded, looking determined. "Let's press forward and approach Kastie Village."
Kaede glanced between the frog and the group, her expression a mix of intrigue and bemusement. "Interesting," she muttered under her breath.
Kane, deep in thought, tried to recall any other instances of hearing frog croaks during their journey. Had they missed any potential signs or omens?
Their contemplations were interrupted by a rustling sound from the nearby woods. The frog, sensing the disturbance, leapt off its perch, disappearing into the underbrush. Out from the thicket stumbled a man, a Catfolk with sandy blonde hair, drenched in blood.
The man's desperate plea reached their ears, "Help... please..."
Before any of them could react, he collapsed onto the road, revealing a dagger embedded deep in his back. Blood oozed, forming a chilling pool beneath him. The metallic scent filled the air, heightening the urgency of the situation.
Kane's instincts kicked in, and with a swift motion, he unslung his shield. "Stay alert," he cautioned the group. "I'll tend to our injured friend." The weight of the shield, a familiar burden, provided a semblance of security.
Kaede, her senses ever sharp, gripped her greataxe firmly. Eyes darting to and fro, she evaluated the surroundings. "Be wary of an ambush. It feels like we're being watched."
"That's precisely what 'stay alert' implies," Kane responded gently, his focus divided between the conversation and the injured Catfolk. With shield raised protectively, he knelt beside the fallen figure, assessing the extent of the injuries.
Rei, her rapier unsheathed and a folded fan in her other hand, cautiously advanced. The rustling woods, coupled with the unknown danger, heightened her senses.
Kori's eyes darted around the perimeter. "Why can’t things ever go smoothly?" she whispered to herself. The sudden appearance of the injured Catfolk, without any preceding sounds of struggle, puzzled her.
Kane's examination revealed a grim reality. "I'm truly sorry," he began, his voice filled with regret, "Your injuries are grievous. I can offer a prayer on your behalf and be a bearer for any final words or wishes you may have." Reverently, he touched the acolyte's symbol that hung from his neck.
Gurgling blood, the Catfolk's voice came out weak and strained, "Please... Kastie Village... in danger... Heiraists... they're slaughtering... everyone. You must hurry..." His grip on Kane's hand tightened momentarily, a final surge of strength, before it gradually weakened.
Kane's voice, filled with determination and compassion, responded, "Understood. We'll do everything in our power to help. And I promise, we'll ensure you're returned to your kin."
The Catfolk's life ebbed away, leaving behind a silence that weighed heavily on the group.
Rei, demonstrating her usual precision, gently removed the dagger from the Catfolk's back. Holding the weapon aloft, she studied its markings, hoping to discern some insight into the assailants' identities.
Kaede's expression was one of sorrow mixed with determination. She voiced what all were thinking, “We should help the village and we should hurry."
Kori's internal struggle was evident. The weight of their original mission versus the immediate danger to Kastie Village pressed upon her. In a moment of clarity, she reaffirmed her commitment to doing what was right. "Right, we should move quickly."
Rei, having completed her inspection of the dagger, pointed to an emblem etched on the blade. "He’s right. This mark belongs to them." She carefully cleaned the dagger with a scrap of cloth before safely stowing it in her backpack. "For evidence," she explained to the others.
Kane's voice, tinged with frustration and sadness, broke the silence. "Cultists... Every encounter with them has been unpredictable. Often, they're just disillusioned youths, rebelling against established norms, engaging in petty acts and bothering the temples. But this? An open act of aggression and violence? It's unprecedented."
Without further ado, Kane led the way, urging the group to quicken their pace toward Kastie Village.
Kori, ever the strategist, voiced her concerns. “I know this isn’t the best time to be unaware of each other’s capabilities but we only have a handful of minutes to plan this out.”
Kori's gaze remained firm, studying each member of the group in quick succession. "So, what are your strengths? Combat styles? Reconnaissance abilities? Stealthy entry expertise? Kane, even you; I suspect you've trained since we last fought together."
She began, offering her own capabilities as an example. "I can manipulate my personal time to some extent and am adept at infiltration. Then there's Mallow." She gently patted the dagger by her side. "It's more than just a blade to me. I can summon it instantly or even transport myself to its location."
Kane, ever the stalwart guardian, nodded. "I've honed my defenses after a few hard lessons. After a particular incident, I discovered I could discern weaknesses in adversaries' defenses with concentrated effort. But it's still a skill I'm mastering. Nevertheless, rest assured, I'm just as resilient as ever." His tone held a quiet, resolute confidence.
Rei, with a respectful bow towards Kori, spoke, "Apologies, but my combat proficiency is somewhat basic. I can defend myself adequately," she demonstrated with a flourish of her rapier, "and provide minor healing if necessary. Stealth, unfortunately, isn't one of my skills."
Kaede, in her signature enthusiastic style, unsheathed her greataxe, sending a powerful shockwave towards the forest with a practiced swing. "I can unleash shockwaves to damage foes. But apart from that, I'm your typical frontline soldier. Speed and perception are my strengths, not stealth."
Kori, pondering their collective capabilities, remarked, “We're quite the straightforward team, aren't we? Then let’s push forward quickly and hope our speed is enough."
The approaching scene was a somber one. Kastie Village, typically a picturesque settlement, was now a tableau of destruction. Wooden homes, once resonating with life, were eerily quiet, some reduced to mere ashes. The scent of smoke mixed with the chilling metallic odor of spilled blood.
Every step they took was a painful reminder of the tragedy that had befallen the village. The ground was littered with shattered artifacts, indicative of a sudden, violent onslaught. The village's modest guards lay defeated, their armor tarnished, weapons broken. The sight was even more heart-wrenching when they came across the lifeless bodies of innocent villagers, including children.
The group's resolve stiffened as a lone, haunting scream pierced the unsettling silence. This desperate cry, unmistakably from a young girl, echoed from up ahead. Distant shadows danced in a chilling ballet, and the weight of Kastie Village's unfolding tragedy compelled the adventurers to act.
Kane, with his imposing stature and heavy armor, surged forward, an unstoppable force propelled by a singular purpose. Beside him, Kaede's eyes were set aflame with fierce determination. Gripping her greataxe, she raced forward, fueled by the hope of saving the solitary voice they could discern amidst the devastation. Rei, rapier poised, marched alongside, prepared to defend the innocent. Kori held the rear of the group as they moved; Mallow would allow her to move to the front line of combat instantly if she needed to. And she had to remind herself that she was technically the client under protection, which was a twist of her expectations.
As the distance closed, the grim tableau sharpened into focus. At the crossroads, a menacing rabbitfolk cultist dominated the scene. Her cold, emotionless eyes and twisted demeanor bore no resemblance to the frightened child she held in her grasp. The child's sobs and desperate pleas reverberated off the surrounding structures, a heartbreaking call to action.
Dark-robed cultists, bearing sinister markings, flanked the rabbitfolk. A lone villager, dirt and tears staining her visage, knelt before them, begging the cultists to spare the child. The palpable tension, with the fate of the young girl at its epicenter, beckoned the party to intervene.
The rabbitfolk's chilling words reached the group, the distance between them not enough to muffle her malice. "I got you...Tehehe. I got you. I'm so excited." As her gaze met the approaching adventurers, her eyes glowed in a flash of red and she smiled wryly. "Oh? Who might you be? You're not guards...Your souls burn brightly, I see. This is no trifling matter. Do not let them interfere! Krazt, escort the holy one to the temple. She is of greater import than any of our lives. Halbo, exhibit your unwavering devotion to our goddess. Dedicate yourself."
Responding to the directive, one of the cultists dropped to his knees, his voice a disturbing babble of incoherent chants.
The High Priestess, her demeanor a blend of arrogance and nonchalance, addressed the party, "I'd really like to not be bothered. Could we perhaps convince you to look away?"
Kane, his voice laden with scorn, retorted, "And I'd rather not get Heirast brains stuck in my mace. But you went and killed a bunch of innocent people instead of keeping to your dark robes and self pitied poetry. That airship has taken flight, I'm afraid."
Unfazed, the High Priestess met Kane's gaze with a sardonic smile, "I hate Kari followers, they're so boring."
Rei, her voice echoing Kane's disdain, shot back, "Well, we hate you too, so that makes us even!"
Kaede's emotions were at a breaking point, her anger palpable. "Don't even dare to think you're getting away with her!" she yelled, her stance betraying an intent to spring into action.
Kane, attempting to defuse the situation with a hint of humor, remarked, "I pity Heirasts, at least the living ones who get the chance to grow up and be ashamed of their idiotic youth and how much clim they wasted on dark makeup."
While the others engaged the cultists with words, Kori's mind raced, formulating a strategy. She assessed the surroundings, judging angles and distances. With Mallow ready in her hand, she whispered her plan to the group. "I’ll come in on the flank, from the right, to engage the three cultists. Kane, hit the high priestess as fast as you can, please."
The stage was set. The confrontation between the adventurers and the cultists would determine the fate of Kastie Village and the young girl at its heart.
The High Priestess, with an air of malevolent grace, lifted an ornate dagger, slicing her palm open without hesitation. She flung the blood to the side, its crimson hue splattering on the ground, setting in motion an ominous ritual.
In a haunting chant, she beseeched, "Oh Heira...my goddess. We pray for your resurrection. Watch over us as we commit to your deeds, as we commit to ourselves...as we commit to our desires. Your servant is in a time of need. Please send me a worthy one from your court. Naris, oh proud one, remember our promise."
The blood, reacting to the eerie incantation, churned and bubbled. From it, a pitch-black void tore through reality, heralding the appearance of a mirror. As swiftly as it had manifested, the void vanished, leaving behind the mysterious artifact.
Turning her attention to the pleading woman, the High Priestess extended her bloodied hand. Her fingers bent in a sinister gesture, she declared with chilling finality, "You are no longer needed." With a snap of her fingers, the woman's agonized scream echoed through the marketplace, her body contorting unnaturally before collapsing. Drool leaked from the woman’s mouth as she stood once more in a crooked gait, becoming a thrall of undeath.
Kane, driven by a mix of rage and righteousness, dashed forward with incredible agility. His intent: to bring down the High Priestess. As he closed the gap, he swung his mace with all his might, only to find her evasive agility matching his strength.
Challenging her openly, he roared, "You dislike Kari? Then face me. My body is a temple blessed by her Light. Cast your darkness upon me and be broken by the Dawn."
The Priestess' reply, dripping with arrogance, came swiftly. As she twirled her dagger, leaving a trail of ethereal blue, she sneered, "Kari is my bitch, cleric. She is nothing before our master."
Rei, not to be left behind, charged alongside Kane. Brandishing her rapier, she lunged at a nearby cultist, the one closest to the unfortunate woman. Her tail, however, betrayed her anxiety, indicating her unfamiliarity with facing such perilous foes.
Kori's expert utilization of Mallow was a sight to behold. With a deft flick of her wrist, she threw Mallow towards a stack of boxes near a building. In a moment that felt like an instant, she was on top of the boxes, Mallow already back in her grasp. Manipulating the fabric of Time itself, she accelerated her actions, launching Mallow again to land a decisive blow on an unsuspecting cultist. Even as he fell to Rei's assault, Kori remained poised, ready to summon herself to her beloved weapon once more.
Kaede, leveraging the opportunities created by her allies, surged forth, her greataxe slicing through the air with lethal intent. As Kori opened a path for her, Kaede delivered a grievous blow to another cultist, her instincts finely tuned to protect the innocent child.
But the battle took an even darker turn as another cultist plunged a dagger into his own heart, shouting with fervor, "I give you my life, Heira!" His body underwent a grotesque transformation, expanding as if overinflated. The sickening tear of flesh was accompanied by the expulsion of an obscene pus. The scene became even more macabre as dozens of rats burst forth from the cultist's body, leaving behind only an empty husk.
The party's attention shifted to another cultist attempting to escape with the child. Rei, with precision, delivered a swift strike to his back, creating an opening for Kaede. Seizing the opportunity, Kaede's greataxe found its mark, slicing deep into the cultist's back. The child's captor fell, ensuring she was no longer in immediate danger.
"Don't even think about taking her!" Kaede growled, her voice echoing the group's collective resolve.
Kori, recalling herself to Mallow's position, approached the terrified child. Swiftly, she tucked the girl under her arm and retreated down the street. As she ran, spectral echoes of her past self emerged, hurling ghostly versions of Mallow at the High Priestess. Unfortunately, the throws were repelled with force reflecting the attack back at the ghostly echo. Had she been there physically, the consequences would have been dire.
Once at a safer distance, Kori gently placed the girl down, offering her words of reassurance, "Stay out of sight and scream if anyone comes for you, okay? I have to go help my friends."
The High Priestess, her confidence unyielding even in the face of adversity, clicked her tongue in annoyance. "I'll get her back eventually. All I have to do is serve you to Heira." With that, she raised her hand, casting a dark incantation. "You're not finished serving yet!" At her command, the lifeless body of a fallen cultist twitched, groaned, and then slowly rose, a ghastly marionette in the thralls of undeath.
Rei, demonstrating her combat finesse, utilized her steel fan to block two incoming strikes. Deftly evading the oncoming zombie, she left behind an illusionary clone, momentarily fooling her undead opponent. Seizing the moment, she drove her rapier through the creature's throat, uttering a whispered apology as she did so.
Closing the distance between her and the priestess, Rei inscribed a formation on the ground with her rapier. "Lady of Light, shield us from harm!" Her plea culminated in the creation of a shimmering dome, encapsulating herself, Kane, Kaede, and the menacing High Priestess.
Within the confines of the radiant barrier, Kane, with a confident smirk, declared, "Nowhere for your darkness in this place, you lover of the abyss. In this light, my hand will guide you to your end!" Without wasting a second, he unleashed a flurry of strikes, each one landing with devastating force. The High Priestess, despite her nimbleness, faltered under the relentless assault.
Kaede, a fiery tempest of emotions, lunged at the High Priestess, her attacks wild and relentless. However, as she swung, mysterious bruises began to appear on her skin. "W-what the?!" she exclaimed, thrown off by this unexpected development.
A faint glow emanated from the mirror, its luminescence hinting at latent power. And every strike that landed on the High Priestess caused the mirror to flash with a violent glint. Meanwhile, the swarm of rats, undeterred by Rei's barrier, continued their relentless assault, gnawing away at the protective shield.
Outside the barrier at the other end of the alley, Kori gently placed Mallow beside the scared girl. "Watch this for me, okay? And don't move away from it; it will protect you."
With that said, Kori pushed mana through her circuits in a burst of motion that let her cross the entire alley in an instant. She deftly hopped and slid over the protective barrier surrounding everyone else and landed neatly next to the ominously glowing mirror. She raised her dagger for a decisive strike to shatter the mirror when every instinct in her body screamed at her to stop. Those very same instincts had saved her from countless ambushes and one fatal poisoning. With a shaking hand, she lowered her weapon and scrutinized the mirror closely. There had to be some way to banish or break it, but force was clearly dangerous.
The world around her seemed to blur and fade as the mirror's shimmering surface consumed her attention. The ethereal whisper in her mind grew clearer, its saccharine tone lulling her deeper into its influence. "You're so close, Kori...So beautiful...You'll figure this out and save them all."
For a moment, she almost succumbed. However, a sudden surge of pain from a rat's bite snapped her back to reality. She glanced down, her eyes widening in horror as she noticed the swarm of vermin gnawing at her legs. Desperately, she tried to scuff and smear the mirror's pristine surface with dirt, but her attempts were in vain. The dirt simply slid off, leaving the mirror as unblemished as ever.
Rei, amidst the chaos, was engaged in her own battle. As she fended off the relentless onslaught from the High Priestess, the horde of rats proved to be an equally formidable foe. Swiftly slashing with her rapier, she tried to keep the swarm at bay, all the while avoiding the mirror's treacherous reflection.
Kaede, already bearing the brunt of her own attacks rebounding due to the mirror's magic, found herself grappling with the rats. Each bite, each scratch, threatened to overwhelm her, but her indomitable spirit refused to yield. Drawing upon her reserves, she unleashed a flurry of blows, determined to protect herself and her companions.
Kane, his every strike against the High Priestess echoing with pain upon his own body, gritted his teeth in frustration. "Your tricks won't save you," he growled. His eyes, burning with righteous fury, locked onto the Priestess. "When we're done here, you and your foul ilk will be but a faded memory."
The weight of their situation was oppressive. Each member of the party was engaged in their own battle, struggling against the combined might of the Heiraists and their dark rituals. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, they refused to waver, their duty to avenge the innocents of the village propelling them forward.
Kori's inner battle raged as she fought the mirror's pull. The mirror's enchantment was potent, seeking to subsume her will, to make her its puppet. For a moment, her vision blurred, the world around her dimming. But the screams, the sounds of combat, the very essence of the life-and-death struggle playing out around her, anchored her to reality.
She had to act.
Dashing across the street, she attempted to shield the mirror using a cloth overhang from a nearby building. But it was futile. The cloth simply blew away, seemingly repelled by an invisible force emanating from the mirror. The mirror's allure beckoned her closer, whispering promises of power, of knowledge. Yet, Kori resisted, her resolve unwavering.
On the frontline, Kane, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to protect, dealt with the rat horde that threatened Kaede. His divine energy flowed, mending Kaede's wounds even as he deftly parried the High Priestess's attacks. The sheer tenacity of the party was evident in every move, every strike.
Rei, sensing the mirror's malevolent influence, quickly dispelled her protective barrier. She grabbed a rock and, in a gamble, hurled it at the mirror, a warning in her mind that the consequences would be dire. To everyone's astonishment, it struck true, leaving a visible crack.
Seizing the moment, Kaede, her instincts guiding her, approached the mirror. Every fiber of her being screamed that attacking the mirror would be perilous. But, trusting in her comrades and her own strength, she unleashed a barrage of blows, shattering the vile artifact into oblivion.
As the mirror's remnants dispersed into the ether, the unnatural aura that had cloaked the battlefield lifted. Kori, her clarity restored, directed her fury at the Heiraist Priestess. Without hesitation, she and her ethereal reflection converged on the dazed priestess, delivering a dual strike that ensured she would no longer pose a threat.
With the immediate threat nullified, Kori returned to the frightened girl's side in a blink with the help of Mallow. The weight of the past moments pressed heavily upon her, but she pushed aside her emotions to ensure the child's safety. "It's okay now," Kori whispered gently, kneeling to the girl's level, "You're safe with us."
Kaede, still catching her breath from the exertion, scanned the vicinity for any lingering threats. Seeing none, she approached the girl, her earlier fierceness replaced by a tender concern. "Are you hurt? Can I help?" she asked.
Kori and Kaede did their best to comfort the girl but could do little more than hold the devastated child as her heart wrenching sobs filled the suddenly quiet alley.
Rei, ever the vigilant scout, made her way towards the fallen priestess. Rifling through the pockets and belongings, she found a letter, its contents potentially vital to their understanding of the situation. As she read, her face darkened, hinting at the gravity of the information contained within.
Kane, his heart heavy with the weight of the loss around him, gathered the bodies with care. Separating the fallen villagers from the slain cultists, he offered a heartfelt prayer to Kari, seeking solace and guidance for their souls in the afterlife.
The once-thriving village was now a desolate landscape of death and destruction. The child's sobs echoed, a reminder of the devastation the Heiraists had wrought.
Unbeknownst to the party a set of eyes surveyed the battle from the shadows. Her red eyes appeared soaked in blood and her short black hair cut into a bob was neatly trimmed. She had tucked her hands into the pockets of her long jacket, which was fully jet black with the exception of a red circle emblem on its arm. The main point of her style was an orange scarf wrapped across her neck.
Kneeling in the shadow of one of the rooftops the girl gave a sigh of relief as she smiled slightly. "Ah... so they were strong enough. Well thats big sis' guild after all." The girl reached into her pocket to pull out a small bag, pulling out a honeygrass ricecake as she popped the entire thing into her mouth.
Standing up with the breeze fluttering her pleated skirt she pondered a moment before saying, "Well... they can have the girl for now." In the blink of an eye she was gone, as if she had melted into the shadows themselves.
