Hey y’all,
Welcome to Oat Pi University’s Food Styling Class.
It’s located on the ground floor of the Films & Photography Building at Oat Pi University. It’s a mix of a kitchen with a classroom, where students learn cooking, special effects, and presentation skills.
This was a little more straightforward than some of the other backgrounds, mostly reworking the old scene and just adding more details.
Here’s the original.

Since the original background had details painted in, the new background needed to have the same details modelled in 3D, like the tomatoes and lemons in the bowls.

A lot of the time, reworking the new backgrounds is looking at the scene and asking if something feels missing, looking for opportunities to add new props and detail.
The easiest way to find those details is to think about who’s using the space and answering a simple question like, “what would a student be doing in that space?”.
Answering that question helps with thinking about what the students need, and it can be useful in finding those seemingly unimportant details like chairs for them to sit on or what they’ll be using for cooking.

But it’s also a balancing act. Adding enough detail that it looks interesting, but not so much that it crowds the entire scene. It’s about creating that balance between looking nice, making it believable, and keeping the original feel.
As I do more background work, I’m slowly getting used to drilling down to questions to help me figure out scenes. I wasn’t expecting to always be thinking about it, but as I’ve worked through more backgrounds, it has been incredibly important especially in combining it with the story and creating scenes that everyone can imagine the characters in.
But what do you think?

If you have any thoughts, they're always welcome in the comments. 💜
