[Writing] Makin' Jokes~!!!

Hey y’all,

With the completion of Chapter 3’s rewrite, all that’s left is Chapter 4 and the Epilogue! But with Bigger and Bouncer, I’ve reached the point in the story where we’ll start making the subtle shift beyond the original, past the “Epilogue”.

I’m hoping not to retcon the stories I’ve written (including the short stories), since I feel like those stories capture those moments the way I want them to be. But I will work them in, where they make sense. 

Starting with Full Moon Night I want to rewrite it as the opening punchline of Act 2, and slide it in between everything as smoothly as I can.

One of the fun challenges with comedy writing is that it often means coming up with a punchline first before coming up with a story. The story is then worked backwards to weave a series of setups that leads to the punchline.

The hard part is making sure that the juxtaposition between the setups and the punchline, over the length of the story, still has integrity on delivery. And sometimes it isn’t until it’s all written down you can say that the joke is funny or not.

But coming up with good punchlines is often serendipity masked in late night delirium. I have a document about 60 pages long with one liners, odd moments and unlikely situations that we’ve accumulated over the years. Most of which are the result of staying up too late with friends, but others are from just seeing something happening in the world and making light of it.

I know most of them aren’t going to get used, but it’s always fun when I finally do. The Librarian Girl Jasmine has a few that I came up with 4 years prior to its first release, which is a long time to hold in a joke.

There have also been a few changes to the story in Chapter 3, mainly around Kareen and the "Bourbon Babes”. The plan is to let Diana and Evelyn’s feud with Kareen play out throughout the story, creating more interesting and crazy moments.

It’s a pretty significant change, but for the better. It’ll let me start the setup of more funnier and lewd situations later, but also let me write more in line with the character’s new personalities as we know them now.

Either way I’m excited to finally get to writing out all the new bits! 🎉
