Vanessa New Hair Rig - 4/4

Back side shot.

This is a bit "mop head"-ish, but I'm not sure how much more I can improve that given some of the limitations in C4D when it comes to hair in general.

Hopefully it'll be good enough for now- I suspect the next major leap in hair quality will arrive whenever I switch over to Houdini. Truth be told, I nearly walked away from C4D twice while trying to build the new rig since it's really starting to test my sanity- but I didn't want to abandon Patreon for months on end while I learn a completely different program, so... yeah. Still gotta switch ASAP though, since I know I'm hitting the roof (not sure if unintentional pun or not) with a lot of the things that I'm trying to do ATM in C4D.

Houdini is another 3D package that focuses more on the more technical side of 3D- I guess you could call it a "3D toolbox" rather than an outright 3D program, since everything inside of Houdini consists of "nodes" (or modules) that you hook together to do various things. It has a better grooming toolkit, a proper liquid sim, more advanced character rigging tools and the ability to more easily handle situations involving clothing and what not. I've been wanting to switch to something "better" now for a while, mostly because development on C4D's core tools seems to have stalled (ie, the hair tools in it haven't really been updated since 2005) and it's really not the best thing for character animation or "experimental" artwork like this. My main goal has always been to show people stuff they've never seen before, and for that I think something else would probably suit my uses better in the long run since C4D excels best at motion graphics (not character animation or simulation) and I've sort of hit the limits of what I can do with it for a lot of things.

What's a Houdini? This looks very good even if it's not what you see in your mind's eye.

Dan
