2021-06-01 08:19:02 +0000 UTCOh boy, here’s the infodump: -“Onmyoji” were those who had powers in divination, prophecy, and the summoning and exorcism of spirits in feudal Japan -“Shikigami” are “Yokai (spirits)” conjured/summoned by Onmyoji to help in their divinations and exorcisms -Seimei is based on the most famous Onmyoji, “Abe no Seimei,” who was the chief astrologist, exorcist, and spiritual advisor for many Emperors. You could call him Japan’s version of a young Merlin. -Doman is based on “Ashiya Doman,” Abe no Seimei’s archenemy. There rivalry was said to be so great that if Seimei was working as an Onmyoji for one political faction/warring faction, Doman would join the opposing one just to get at him. -It should be noted that while Gintama takes place in a warped 1860s Japan, Abe no Seimei and Ashiya Doman were alive during the 900s-1000s era, so it’s an anachronism. Also, by the 1860s the idea of the Onmyoji was on its last legs, being replaced by more scientific and pragmatic/realistic advisors. In 1870, the official department of Onmyodo was dissolved.
