New Culture Cruise Video! The Absolute Pleasure of the Rocky Horror Picture Show

Hello there and thanks again so much for your support on Patreon!

Next week, I'm releasing a brand new Culture Cruise video. And as always, everyone pledging at the $4+ level gets early ad-free access. Here's your special link to the video:

Early Ad-Free Access: The Absolute Pleasure of the Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Rocky Horror Picture show was a huge failure, at least when it premiered. It was too weird, too queer, too musical at a time when moviegoers stopped caring about showtunes. But within a few years, it found a new life as an underground phenomenon where everyone dresses up, shouts along, participates in rituals -- like a Catholic mass but for drama club kids. So how did that happen?

And! I hope you'll join us for some upcoming livestreams!

October 13 - Sewers of Paris livestream: Join us at 2pm PST for another Sewers of Paris livestream! The special guest this month is Trish Bendix, managing editor of Grindr's news site Into. Head over here to watch, and click "set reminder" to get a notification when we go live: https://youtu.be/XwNB9zLSbjk

October 27 - Sewers of Paris livestream: It's an open topic on this livestream, so we'll be chatting about whatever games you're playing, books you're reading, shows you're watching, and movies you're loving. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/c/MattBaume/live

Because of your support, I'm able to host these Sewers of Paris livestreams twice a month, and it's been so wonderful to chat with you about the books, movies, shows, and songs that you're obsessing over right now.

Thanks again for making all this queer content possible!

PS I have been on a mission to find Hot L Baltimore (you mentioned it in one of your videos) and it's driving me crazy that I can't find it!!!

Once again -- great video Matt. I loved the personal story of coming out publicly interwoven throughout the discussion of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. That night clearly was a personal milestone for you and Rocky Horror is strongly tied to that memory. As an added bonus, the setting and the themes from the movie almost eerily mirror your own journey that night! I still remember the first time that someone referred to me as gay in a very matter of fact type way as you described in the video (I wish the setting of my story was more memorable the it actually was). There was no judgment from that person. My heart was pounding in my chest as I listened and took in what they said and I see that as a tipping point for me to come out to others around me. I walked away from that conversation thinking, “Well that seemed quite ‘normal,’” and wasn’t as scary as I had imagined it! Looking back I see that time in my life as one filled with a lot of shame (which is SUCH as shame that I spent so many years feeling like that) and hiding the real me from the rest of the world. Even some of the shows that I was watching at the time (notably Charmed, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Smallville) all dealt with people having to hide who they were from others — so I felt like I was in good company! (Maybe that is a potential video for the future?) Lastly, thank you for the shout out! I almost did a spit take with my coffee when I saw my name! Ha ha.
