He said he wanted to, but had not decides how to do it, even contemplating putting in the war. Like his mask getting burned off. In the end the manga ended and he decided to just put it into an episode, hence why we got this and why it was so late into the war...

He is only still alive because black Zetsu kept him alive and Naruto's clone bought him some more time by "Healing" him. but he didn't fully save him from dying. thats why after naurto healed obito he said "I healed you, BUT...." and Obito saw like "I see/I know" or whatever. What he meant by BUT was "But i can't save you" He even said it himself that he doesn't have much time and want's to walk in front of naruto and die for him. He is doomed one way or the other.

I knew this was gonna be THE EPISODE for Michelle 😂 So, this is mixed canon because after the manga ended and the Naruto celebrations started happening, this Kishimoto drawn and written special short chapter about "Sukea" helping Team 7 with taking a picture of Kakashi (and his face reveal) was released only at Jump Festa or a special exhibit if I'm not mistaken. Only those in attendance got this short chapter but of course it was uploaded online with speed. Also, this would definitely constitute an anime episode, so this came out a few months (or more?) after the special short chapter was released. The meeting with Gai, the Genin 9's plan A & B, etc. were not originally part of the chapter but they didn't take away anything either.

Not to say Kishimoto didn't approve of the story before chapter 52 but he fully retookover after that chapter. Another thing, don't listen to people that say Boruto is trash until Kishimoto starts writing the story. Like many anime it has an average arc pretty early on but the rest of the manga canon material is fantastic.

When I watched Naruto for the first time back in 2021, I watched the movie after episode 493 (because I followed a list on Google) and have "regretted" this decision ever since. I can't explain why (because that would be a spoiler) but your decision is the right one ! Watching the movie after episode 493 isn't a terrible idea, it's actually pretty "logical" (again, I can't say why because spoilers), but I think the emotions and the story has a lot more impact when you watch the movie after episode 479. By the way, there's a post-credit scene in the movie.
