The Demon King is too powerful to exist in the mortal realm. So if Meliodas breaks Elizabeths curse by becoming the Demon King he will will have to live out his days in purgatory. So its actually a fate worse than death for him if he succeeds, but hes emotionally dead so he doesnt care.
