Apothecary Diaries - Episode 19

Comments

When I watched this episode for the first time I didn’t feel any emotions until I watched it again after reading all the light novels. 🤣🤣 Don’t worry guys, your questions will be answered in later episodes.

The show just "gently" reminding you that Maomao is a literal nobody to almost everyone and that every time she gets roped into these assassination plots/etc she could *EASILY* get killed.

This is how everything starts to connect. To answer Michelle's question: whether Jinshi is the Emperor’s sick brother or a secretly swapped son, he would still be next in line for the throne unless the Emperor has an official heir born to one of the four high-ranking concubines. 1:03min of this video, Gaoshun reminded Jinshi there will be a medium ceremony in the afternoon. Here is some info from the manga.(This is also actual Chinese ceremony facts.) The ceremony referred to in this episode is called "chuusai", which stands for "medium scale ceremonies"(I believe "chuusai" is in between "taisai" and "shousai" and close to a "shunsai"), but there's also the following type of ceremonies: Taisai (Grand Ceremonies): His Majesty the Emperor presides over the ceremonies himself (which also means they are the main person performing in the ceremony) and delivers a special address Otsugebumi(Imperial message). Shousai (Minor ceremonies): Grand Master of the Division of Rituals(a high-ranking individual/nobility) presides over the ceremonies(person-in-charge to perform the ceremony), during which His Majesty the Emperor offers prayers of worship. [The medium ceremony] Shunsai (Regular ceremonies): Grand Master of the Division of Rituals(a high-ranking individual/nobility) presides over the ceremonies (person-in-charge to perform the ceremony) held on the 1st, 11th and 21st day of each month. In principle, His Majesty the Emperor offers prayers of worship at the ceremony held on the 1st of each month. In the manga, it is mentioned that MaoMao thought to herself when Suiren(Jinshi old lady caretaker) told her to eat vegetarian food, that someone might be performing a Misogi—a purification ritual. MaoMao noticed that Jinshi has to go out to attend to something every half a month. Jinshi would take a hot bath while burning incense before it(cleansing the body before a purification ritual). MaoMao wonders if Jinshi could be performing this ritual, which is typically carried out by individuals of high standing who lead or participate in religious ceremonies or festivals. If Jinshi were born into a noble/royal family, he would likely be occasionally tasked with such responsibilities.
