Mainly he was gunning for Jinshi's position and standing (He's very high ranking and Monocle Man has been jealous). He also knew about the others who were trying to take others out to be put in top positions (in consorts, concubines,ladies-in-waiting,etc). Along with the damage he did to her mother on purpose so he could have her/afford her...that man is šļø and despicable. He wants Maomao to acknowledge him and she refuses, only acknowledging her adopted dad. The emperor's father willed her(the youngest concubine)to him to keep or to sell her. Like you and Tre talked about, the current Emperor protected her, so she wouldn't be sold and used as someone else's concubine (for those who do like them that young). But Maomao in the coffin ā°ļø tho, testing out her theory...I love this show. Hurry up season 2.
