TheDataDB June 2020 Newsletter

Intro

Here we go again with our 2 monthly Newsletter. We’ve put down our coding environment for a few minutes to update you on the new features and content that have come to our sites in the last 2 months.

General updates

Thanks to all our new supporters and welcome if this is your first newsletter update, exclusively for supporters. We added another 70 supporters this month mostly on the sports and cocktail/meal websites, but also a few new TheAudioDB supporters which is great to see. That site had a big revamp last month and is on a new bigger server backbone so look forward to much more to come in that area.

Our earnings have been affected quite a lot recently due to some changes with Patreon and the addition of local currencies and tax changes, so it’s more important than every to help us out with your support. All the money goes towards the sites hosting, hardware, software and equipment needed to maintain a stable service, we thank you kindly and have never been more positive about the future. Currently we are hosting 10’s of millions of API hits a day from all over the world.

TheCocktailDB / TheMealDB

We’re concentrating on content at the moment for this site and you will hopefully see much more regular weekly updates of new cocktails and recipes. Last month we added 20 new cocktails to the site with many more queued up for the future.

We’re always receiving email feedback from subscribers and we do read and reply to everyone sent. One of our favourites was a user asking for more Quiche recipes, well you now have 5 of them to rustle up in the kitchen! Keep the requests coming but please do try to take a photo of the meal or drink you create or want uploaded, it helps us a lot with original content.

We’ve also continued our mission to update more drinks and meal artwork with more creative commons licensed photos. As always you can check this using our API.

Every month we concentrate on adding meals from a different part of the world and this month we focused on the north African country of Egypt. You can find local dishes, soups and side dishes that are easy to make with an authentic north African flavour.

We added new ingredients such as Watermelon, Mulukhiyah, Sauerkraut, Caraway Seeds and Bulgur Wheat, all with high resolution transparent images that should look great in your apps and websites.

TheSportsDB

With the new sports seasons coming up we’ve been working extra hard on a new more reliable soccer importer. This work is just about complete and you will see the new season schedules appear in most leagues very soon. We’ve already populated the English Premier League and German Bundesliga as well as many others for the 2020/2021 seasons.

Talking about seasons we’ve finally move towards a 2020/2021 string format for requesting the season on both the site and the API.

There is also a lot of work to get American Sports events and live scores in a more stable condition. Its been hard with all the “Covid” suspensions and political protests, but we are working hard to get the leagues perfect. MLB is a particular focus as we have no livescore stream for that yet, hopefully its coming soon!

Meanwhile our users have gone into overdrive and added many new teams and player statistics recently. Particular thanks to the users who have worked on the world cup teams and historical archive as well as the basketball player greats. Another area much improved has been the Motorsport, golf and fighting events. Updated each week with artwork, results and video highlights.

Work on V2 of the API continues slowly and we are still taking requests for all the different features developers want. Get involved on our forums.

TheAudioDB

Letting the dust settle on the complete re-write of the site its been great to see activity pick up again on the artwork and editing side of things. We regularly push about 60gb of data a day from this site so we know it is really well used.

As we re-arranged the API keys a fair few apps contacted us to get private keys, this support is essential for us to pay the bandwidth bills and keep the site stable into the future.

Each week we add the latest albums from the iTunes chart for the US, GB and to a lesser extent Germany, France and Italy. If you can help out with the latter please check out the itunes chart and add any missing albums or artists.

Some improvements to the site this month included fixes for re-uploading some artwork such as CDart, users can now replace art if they feel they can improve it. Just click the small pencil icon next to the artwork.

We also added a lot more 4K resolution covers, mainly for more popular artists and albums but the collection is certainly growing. 4K artwork is only available to Patreon subscribers. Lastly, we increased the number of albums returned from artist and album searches to 100. Lots of small bugs were fixed along the way but do let us know on the forums if you find anything else.

Thanks for reading the newsletter, keep your support going so you can read the next newsletter update. And thanks again for your support!

Comments

This looks normal - all recipes are allocated 20 ingredients to maintain the database structure. If a recipe has less than 20 items, this database assigns an empty string. Pros: database structure. Cons: memory inefficiency.

Hey guys, I have been using the random recipe search and some of the ingredent array items are left as an empty string. Is this normal? Example below. {"meals":[{"idMeal":"52980","strMeal":"Stamppot","strDrinkAlternate":null,"strCategory":"Pork","strArea":"Dutch","strInstructions":"\r\nWash and peel the potatoes and cut into similarly sized pieces for even cooking.\r\n\r\nIn a large soup pot, boil the potatoes and the bay leaves in salted water for 20 minutes. Trim any coarse stems and discard any brown leaves. With a sharp knife, cut the curly kale into thin strips.\r\n\r\nPeel and chop the shallots.\r\n\r\nIn a frying pan or skillet, melt 1 tbsp. of butter and saute the shallots for a few minutes before adding the curly kale and 2 tbsp. of water.
