March Q&A - leave your questions here!

Hey!

Hope you've all been well! I wanted to post this up and start gathering some of your questions for the next Q&A, I'll post up the date of the livestream itself soon.

Things have been pretty intense for me this month, thanks to all of you for supporting me as I try to find a good balance! I've been getting a few suggestions for things you'd all like to see, but I'll make a separate thread for that as I definitely want to know what would interest you moving forward. I had one of those perfect storm moments the past couple weeks where back to back jobs all lined up with deadline after deadline so I haven't been as active as I'd like, but I have plans for more very soon. I recorded my whole process for the previous pokemon post but there's some video artifacts almost directly in the center of the screen. I'm gonna post it up sped up and I'll probably just do a livestream walking you all through the process because the past couple recordings didn't work for whatever reason. But thankfully these past few days have allowed me to get back to working up the Metal Gear Solid piece which is sooo close to being done, so goddamn close(I attached it to this post).

Anyway, hope you had a good weekend!

Dave

Quick question regarding technical brush settings from the brushes you gave us in Clip Studio (which i bought thanks to you!). Do you mess with the pen pressure sensitivities on your computers system preferences under Cintiq options? Also, i see in your process vids that you hardly change your brush size? Like your cursor looks a lot bigger than what the brush’s size is when painting. I just can’t figure out why I’m having a harder time not being able to draw uniform lines like when you do a crosshatch.. I’m just not sure if my pen pressure is all jacked up! Besides that, I asked these questions on your ArtCafe with Maciej.. can’t wait to hear it! Not sure if you guys got to these though but in case you didn’t see them, here ya go! 1. Would you collab with LazerHawk again & finish skull and shark? 2. If you could collab on a one time gig with any artist in the world (beside Dan), who would it be & what would you do? 3. If you were asked to make any animated series (or game) what would you do?

Hey Dave, I was wondering what your thoughts are regarding makin some raunchy content. I was thinking of starting an art themed youtube channel that'd be more on the adult side, but I also want to get into freelance and currently workin on a portfolio. I would defs use a pseudonym but if someone puts in 5 minutes of effort they'd probably be able to link the channel to my actual freelance identity. Would this be a career ruiner? I know you've done the garfeild stuff but at that point you were already in the big leagues- I don't even have my foot in the door. Do the clients do in-depth background checks on artists? Thanks for takin the time.

Like when we grew up Casey Jones was the shit, you know what i mean? probly not this was horribly written, but ill try again later! haha

Nicholas Puente

MY questions is do you think we are just homers?- we grew up in that era so of course we love that stuff.- like do think kids will grow up thinking Kylo Ren and Daenerys and chris pratt for his Jurrassic Park bangers are the shit, and if so was it cause of writing/ design/ or something else

Nicholas Puente

At one time, the coolest dude you could be was Casey Jones, but as we got older you knew it was kinda corney as hell to be casey jones... BUT at the time- dude he got April and saved the turtles. And it was always like a loser thing to like pokemon and nintendo power magazines, but man theyre cool as fuck... i didnt realize thats what i loved so much abou tyour work until you just started coming out with the watercolor/ texture style specifically

Question regarding building a career presence - how would you build your website/social media if you want to be versatile and work in many industries and styles? For example, if you wanted to do classical atelier fine art, pixel art, and comics, how would you go about establishing yourself? I've heard that there is risk of having a convoluted and disjointed portfolio if you put too many different things up, as people don't feel like they know what they can hire you for. But for me personally, I don't feel like I could be happy doing only one thing. How have you been able to be as versatile as you are without turning off or confusing people?

Dave lovin' the creamy flow of info, so milky and rich! Question, how Important is monitor color calibration to you in regards to having your comic printed and can you point me in the right direction to finding a good comic printing facility, is China still the way to go or is having a comic printed in the U.S. option. Thanks!

Tony Chris

not really a question but more of a request for maybe a breakdown on master studies? I find myself struggling to analyze master paintings in terms of value studies and composition and was hoping you'd have some tips or advice! p.s. thanks so much for being so comprehensive in your videos! loving it ~

Dave thanks for being a huge inspiration and helping me feel like I can achieve anything with my art if I put in the work. My question is, when creating a character portrait from imagination, do you see their facial features and expression vividly in your mind before you start the sketch or do you find them as you draw? If they’re fully formed in your mind, how close of a likeness do you get to the vision in your head?

Leighton Chance

When are you gonna make some prints? I know you talked who knows how long before on Steve stream that you were playing with the idea of making one.

Mush

Are you familiar with the "bean method" of drawing the torso? If yes what do you think of it, if not, thanks for reading the question(happy to be a supporter).

Arcturus

Ok thanks, i'll keep that in mind

Klutsen

How do you deal with second guessing your drawings, not feeling like the drawing is “right”.

Eric Williams

Hey Dave, what's your approach to planning out your compositions in your comics?

Alfonso Gonzalez

Hey Dave, I'm a big pussy when it comes to actually obtaining work as a freelancer but current events have forced me to bite the bullet a bit and come out of shell. My question is, did you use to be a big pussy (like me) when you started and gradually gained more confidence with networking/finding clients/selling yourself or were you always comfortable doing that?

Timbo

Hey Mr delicious, That's right I've been a supporter for that long and too quote you, " you're beautiful" Question, "how do you deal with rejection? And what's your daily routine like now Vs before having a kid? I just creamed.... All the best

John Crossland

Hey Dave, How would you recommend doing color and master studies? Step 1? What to focus on? Main take away from it? Thanks!

Bora_M

The stories they’ve told of being alone so much that you start to do weird shit are relatable to me now. Cooped up all the time studying by yourself will do that. I just get out with some friends once a week or so and I go to the gym regularly. The gym helped immensely with the mental stuff.

Joshua Barbour

Have you ever had any issues with your wrist or shoulder after drawing for long periods of time? If so, did you find any exercises that helped or did you change up how you draw?

Faolan Grady

How deal with loneliness or depression or that stuff?, 'cause it's really hard when you spent more and more time in building your art skills, and friends or people around you begins to leaving you aside, 'cause you are the weird guy that study all the time. I mean, where can i find a friend like Dan Warren?, xd.

Klutsen

What’s the chance you go full tradchad in the next 10 years

Ian Marshall Pellerin

How do you schedule your day, write everything down a night before?, Do you write down what you should do at each hour of the day? Love you Dave.

Félix Hinojosa

Firstly I want to say I took your Q&A/Twitter advice and cut back on reference. In return I was able to come up with something that was dynamic and accurate to what I saw in my head. And it also forced me to recollect the stuff I learned/study gaps in my abilities. so thanks for that push. As for questions is there anything you struggle with currently in art and what improvements do you want to make in the stuff youre doing now? I.e. composition, lighting or whatever.

Devin

Hi Dave! Could you make a tutorial on your process of making character concept art for clients? like what do you think about, how you come up with designs, what do you show the client stage by stage. Would love to see that. : D

Locochon

How did you practice anatomy to the point where you where at level to where you could draw stright from imagination? I envy artists like you and karl kopinski. But you guys are definitely my inspiration.

elijah eddings

What were some of your inspirations for Steve Lichman? It's so weirdly funny and dark and I love it
