Hi Dave & Kim! I have a question about practicing art styles, I noticed that I don't really stick to a single style and I was wondering if it will affect my future as an artist, do I need to focus on a single style and get better at it? but I do enjoy doing different styles, just wondering if I shouldn't divide my focus when it comes to art styles. also thank you for providing a lot of learning materials through this Patreon, I've been learning and enjoying art more ever since I got here, Cheers! I hope yall are having a great time!

2022-06-17 10:52:03 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim, I'm a longtime lurker and just wanted to introduce myself briefly! I'm a game design grad with a hobbiest background as an artist, and decided to refocus on my art, which I've neglected for quite some time while I was in school. I've always been told I've had "talent" in drawing, but I've acknowledged it more to be a symptom of being a "big fish in a little pond" syndrome (calling myself a big fish is an overstatement lol). On top of that, I've always given game pitches to peers/faculty and recieved very positive comments and feedback on them, but I've never had an illustration/series of them to illustrate the game concepts. 2 parts of this question: - How would you recommend getting into the "ocean" without drowing/being overwhelmed and swept up by the large currents that come from engaging with mainstream/larger communities? - As a single person working on an idea that probably requires more than one person, where would you recommend starting in terms of illustrating the idea that's been sporadically world-built over time? (characters, environment, etc) Sorry if the question's a bit scattered--I'm in chat if you'd like more clarification. Apologies in advance, and thanks again for all the crazy cool stuff and for a great place to learn and grow as an artist!

2022-06-17 03:13:55 +0000 UTCHayooo Daddy Hog, I was wondering if you ever struggle with rushing through illustrations and not enjoying the process? I find myself forgetting to enjoy the process and dont put enough intention behind some illustrations. I recognize the solution is just to be more intentional but Im wondering if you have any thoughts on it. Thank you for keeping our cream frothy

2022-06-17 01:50:03 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim! I want to break into freelancing, and I have no idea how to keep track of business records and taxes. How did you figure this stuff out, Dave? Are there any apps or websites you use for this purpose? Maybe you've answered this topic somewhere else. If you could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. I'll let you guys get back to wrangling the rest of the piggies now. Keep a close eye on those oinksters, buddy! They can sense fear.

2022-06-17 01:09:08 +0000 UTCHi Dave and Kim! Do you think there is a best way to practice/study art? I've been trying to improve my practice routine recently and wanted to hear how you approached getting better when you were a younger artist, or if there's anything you could have improved on looking back. Love the Patreon and hope all is well!

2022-06-17 00:46:28 +0000 UTCDave, concerning job competition in the industry, should I be more worried about AI generated art or all of the crazy art talent that seems to be coming out of China? Joking (mostly 🥴), but I am curious about your perspective as a professional illustrator. Based on what you’ve seen online, how long do you think it’ll be before AI is good enough that trained artist have to compete for jobs with people without art training that use AI art generators? Hope y’all are doing well. Also, I live in your walls! Pitter patter 🐀

2022-06-17 00:27:32 +0000 UTCHello Dave and Kim, greetings from Chihuahua, México (yes, just like the dog). I have two questions. The first one is, Dave, have you ever thought about making a Doom painting? and if so, wich Doom game would you choose to base the artwork from? The second one is for both of you. Have you ever seen David Finch's youtube channel? He is a great comic book artist that reminds me of Dave's artwork because of the level of detail that he does on his artwork. Also his livestreams reminds me a lot of your inking streams together. At last, i want to thank you both for the effort put into the patreon, it inspires me to keep drawing. Is always a pleasure beign able to see Dave's artwork and at the same time, supporting it

2022-06-17 00:11:42 +0000 UTCHey Dave! Hey Kim! Really love the help you're giving to us artists! My question is about character design. I'd like to know the approach that you do whenever you want to create original and compelling characters. I have no trouble drawing the characters being themselves, but I do have trouble varying the elements of their design, my characters end up looking too plain. They look like they're just wearing a simple shirt and some pants. I have trouble coming up with things to add. Thanks so much!

2022-06-16 23:54:15 +0000 UTCHello Dave and Kim! My question is about values. Specifically what makes values good? I love painting in grayscale, but I often get stuck mid-way in a painting just staring at it and not really knowing if it looks okay. I try to adjust levels and contrast, but there is something I keep doing wrong and I can't really figure out what. It either looks too washed out and low contrast or too harsh. I do a lot of value studies of my favorite artists who I can clearly see nails the values and compare my own work to theirs. But it never looks as good. Any advice on values would be greatly appreciated! Thank you guys for this amazing patreon and for filling up the pig pen's slop trough to the brim with all this delicious knowledge!

2022-06-16 23:05:46 +0000 UTCHey Dave, just wondering if there are any really niche/ bizarre subjects you haven't explored that you really want to? Or any that you just appreciate? I've been really into really old, weird and scientifically inaccurate dinosaur paintings, as an example. Also can folks who submit a portfolio review, get another review much later on down the road, if they update theirs with new material? Have a great weekend!

2022-06-16 22:45:00 +0000 UTCHey man, I enjoy your stuff and signed up on patreon just to see how you manage your workflow. I am getting back into digital after many years. I saw you mention Clip Studio as possibly a better more efficient option than Photoshop for artists. Do you still work with both? I remember when I worked with Photoshop I used but a fraction of the tools and it felt very bloated with functions that would never apply to me. Would you recommend still getting the Adobe suite or giving Clip a shot for just illustration? Cheers.

2022-06-16 22:34:44 +0000 UTCHey Dave, Hey Kim. Dave, can you tell the folks at home what "freelancing" was in the beginning. I work my 40 hours in the sun shoveling rocks for a man whose face I haven't seen, but by god, I know exactly where and how I get my money. Whenever I've heard any freelancer talk about jobs, it gives me anxiety. How did you look at the jobs you got when you started out. Was there like a weekly/monthly quota you would try and fill? Other than getting shelled in the Pacific, I can't imagine a more stressful lifestyle. Thanks and stay well.

2022-06-16 22:20:09 +0000 UTCFor far too long I endured those late-night streams Rapoza family. I'm not satisfied with just VODs. I demand you all move to Europe! But for real, thank you for all the amazing content you provide It has been a journey watching you do those painting and feeding the pig pen! And building this discord community - Cheers and here is to many more successful years! Also, enjoy Kim destroying the wanna-be meme lords in chat , no one can stand up to the level!

2022-06-16 22:16:41 +0000 UTCHi Dave and Kim, I'd like to know a bit more about what's expected of folks working in the industry. Dave, let's say that this month's 3-step transformation challenge was a real project the team at your concept art day job was working on. What would you expect from your team members at the end of a work day? How about at the end of a week? I want to get to a point where my quality and speed are high enough to be considered a legitimate candidate for jobs, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be aiming at. Thanks as always and much love to you and the family!

2022-06-16 19:50:20 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim! Hope all is well. I'm really curious about how you choose your colors for your paintings/drawings in photoshop, specifically for shadows. I've taken color theory and understand the triads, complements, etc, but I really have a hard time choosing color schemes for shadows in particular. Do you have any advice on how to choose the right colors for shadows to make my drawings look and feel more realistic? Some people say to choose a darker complement color for shadows, while others say you can use a neighboring color (like dark orange if you are already using red). I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks so much for all the amazing work and content and for caring about helping your fellow artists. :)

2022-06-16 18:06:24 +0000 UTCHey Dave! Appreciate the insight as always. My question is - How do you generate ideas? I’ve always found that technical prowess can only get you so far, then design (ideas) seems to be the secret sauce. Mmmm sauce. Oh uh thanks Dave!

2022-06-16 16:37:12 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim, Thanks again for everything you do. I think it was in the last Q&A you briefly mentioned perfectionism being crippling. I can certainly attest to that. I often won’t start something (not just with regards to art, but also like cleaning the house or cooking) because I won’t be able to do it in a perfect way due to for example time constraints, so I don’t do it at all, but not doing it at all results in a worse state than if I would’ve done a half-assed job. Perfectionism in a way is resulting in the opposite to what it’s trying to do. Do you have any advice or good books or talks on how to overcome perfectionism or reframe it to something more productive? Being aware of it is a start, but I’m not always self-aware enough to catch myself in the act. Thanks!

2022-06-16 12:14:57 +0000 UTCHey Dave! I was wondering whether working in a more purely lineart/ink style is accepted in the concept art industry, especially for building portfolios. I have been looking through and enjoying SixMoreVodka Studio's Orken project, but that is more of a personal passion thing of an already well-established studio. Any thoughts?

2022-06-16 11:07:01 +0000 UTCCongrats Pig Pen Pals! Each of you have won a brand new iPhone 5 with Angry Birds preinstalled. All you have to do to redeem your prize is answer the following question: Dave, when you're doing interior comic art for StarVeil or Steve, what's your canvas size and DPI usually? Thanks for the answer, champ!

2022-06-16 07:59:25 +0000 UTCAlright Boss Hog, time to come clean; what are some clothing items, haircuts and/or body mods that you like in terms of character design but can’t stand to see people wear in real life? Trench coats, fingerless gloves, fedoras, facial tattoos, etc etc

2022-06-16 07:20:40 +0000 UTCHELLO! I'm new here and glad to be here! I'm also new to digital art in general and was just curious if you had any advice for someone new? And how do you keep motivated to produce as much as you do on such a consistent basis?

2022-06-16 05:14:56 +0000 UTCHey Dave and Kim hope you guys are well, I'm a 19-year-old beginner artist who plans on self-publishing a comic book franchise and fan art posters like what you do as a long-term goal, my current goals are to improve my skills to get to the level where you are at and improve as a writer I've been practicing every day and have been writing out story ideas. Any advice or other things I should do to improve and get closer to my goals? P.S. your videos are really nice to listen to while drawing and the Priest manga you recommended in one of your older videos is a pretty cool series

2022-06-16 04:19:15 +0000 UTCHey, Dave! I'm curious to hear your opinions on Krita after you took it for a spin this week. I'm new to digital drawing and chose Krita because it's free and people seem to like it. Does it feel worth investing time into, or would it be better to bite the bullet and go for a paid option? What have been some things you've liked and disliked about Krita?

2022-06-16 03:43:39 +0000 UTCThanks as always Dave. I'm curious about the judging process for Deviantart contests, and I remember you judged for one back in early 2020. Are you as a judge have full control over who you pick, or does the team shortlist it for you? Do they give you "secret" criteria to use that they don't advertise? I'd understand if you are not at a liberty to say, though. Thanks!
