Just a few sketches and comparisons. Most of the pages came very easily this month, so there are not that many alternate versions.
1. The intro of Chapter 4 sketching process. Starting with a very rough draft, followed by simple linework, finished with polished lines and color.
2. The first panel of Page 31 relied on this shot for a while. Here we see a head with dark hair rolling towards the trash chute, between the two guards. I preferred this idea because of the timing; the head rolling away as Mettaton chastises the guards. But, it didn't feel scary or personal to Aliza's unease in the moment, so I switched the view to include her witnessing the "trash" herself.
3. A great example of how most of the panels end up. I tend to draw and re-draw the lineart over and over until it feels smooth and more "right". This panel of the two guards starring down Mettaton was a surprising struggle. I'm trying really hard to branch away from the cartoony vibe the previous few pages have, but it's not easy! It wasn't until I used a thinner brushstroke did it finally begin to feel more serious and right for the comic's feel.
4. A simple sketch of Aliza looking at the human head on the trash pile.
5. It's pretty common for Aliza to assume different poses/expressions before I decide on her final look. This 3/4 style stuck around until JUST before I finished the page with the way it looks now. prefer her staring down at the reader during this tense moment rather than above herself.
