Cinderella - 100 - HD

The (Sort of) Brilliance of Prince Elliot - https://www.egscomics.com/egsnp/cinder-100

The important thing is his brain got where it needed to go without any serious collisions along the way.

Commentary

He managed the impossible leap to the truth by being too out of touch to consider any far more likely scenarios.

And... Uh-oh. I've just realized what I wanted to say next is better said next comic again. Um...

Hey, let's talk unaware overpowered protagonists! I made this joke while working on this comic:

"Oh no

OH NO

I MADE PRINCE ELLIOT AN UNAWARE OVERPOWERED PROTAGONIST"

Technically he's not the protagonist, but still! He actually has really good potential, and he thinks himself the worst.

There's essentially a genre of manga and anime out there in which the protagonist is the most powerful character around, but they think of themselves as a weakling. Nearly every time I've seen this, I've seen it done for laughs, and as much as I'd like to laugh along with the silly, I mostly just find it catastrophically frustrating.

"I just defeated a dragon the size of several buildings. Everyone is looking at me in amazement. There's destruction everywhere, and I'm being told again and again in no uncertain terms that no one else could have handled this monster. Oh, how they spare the feelings of this weakling before them."

And since "that's the joke," it continues like that, the character doomed to never really progress (though I'm sure exceptions exist, because that's how exceptions work, except when they don't).

(Looks at Prince Elliot) Buddy, I can't guarantee you're going to be confident before this storyline is over, but I vow I'm going to give you SOMETHING in terms of progress.

Wait, you already went from sulkily moping down the stairs to happily running off, confident in your ability to get away.

HA! YOU'VE ALREADY HAD THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! ALL BETS ARE OFF!

You should read Beware the chicken. Technically, Jin is the main character and is an unaware overpowered one. But the way he keeps on ignoring the truth is funnily plausible, such as considering the adept he thoroughly beat was an impostor and not staying long enough for the authorities to tell him he was not, and then said authorities being so cautious around him they don't dare imply he was wrong later on (and also being completely baffled by his behaviour, trying to understand what his angle is with his obviously-fake humble persona). But the author circumvented the frustration part by having "secondary" characters that actually take the front stage in the stories, including the above-mentioned chicken.

I feel like, in a world where fairy godmothers exist, it's reasonable to think that getting one's assistance means something more significant (and less mundane) than just needing a new dress or a ride. So I don't know if Elliot's conclusion-jumping was that out of line. Hmm.

Unaware about how overpowered they are, and not the main character? That's just the Prince Charming / Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope in a nutshell. (and yes, I lump those two together, because if they're not just gender/role-swap of the same trope, they're definitely mirrors of each other)
