EXCLUSIVE REACTION: Pride and Prejudice 1x05

You guys missed a key joke a few episodes back where Mr Bennet teases his wife about dying before she does, and I think you have subsequently misinterpreted his character—basically everything he says, including in this relatively serious conversation, is meant to be a wry joke. He loves teasing people, it’s his whole personality, and part of the fun is that most people he says it to (except Lizzie and Jane) don’t understand it.

No names please

The resemblence you might be catching in the actress playing Darcy's sister (Emilia Fox) could be to her real-life brother (Freddie Fox), who played the Swedish king in The Great. Or indeed, to their mother (Johanna David), who is playing Mrs Gardiner (Lizzie's aunt) here! The Fox family is something of an acting dynasty.

Why would wickam stay with Lydia and not abandon her at the first opportunity will always be a mystery to me? Is it explained in the book?

Also, Pride and Prejudice costars Jennifer Ehle (Lizzy) and Colin Firth (Darcy) dated from 1994 to 1995.

Darcy did say « she’s not handsome enough to tempt ME » which implies that he thinks she’s beautiful but « not beautiful enough » to make him drop his responsibilities, place in society etc to pursue her. Which since they didn’t know each other at the time makes sense since ultimately it’s her wit and liveliness that attract him. It also shows his character —he wouldn’t just fuck around with her if it wasn’t something he could not legitimately pursue (as opposed to wickham). But he’s not great at communicating and comes off as rude especially cause he’s annoyed with Bingley trying to force him to be more extroverted and agreeable.

To be fair to them, I think it’s pretty evident that they know that Bridgerton isn’t exactly a documentary level look at the time period. I think it’s fine if they just react…I personally hate it when people nitpick reactors so much that they lose some of their spontaneity. Most people who follow reactors do so because it feels like watching a movie or show you love with a friend…it’s fine not to know everything and just react to things off the cuff. Not everything requires a ton of research beforehand; it can just be enjoyed at face value.

This came out when I was 13 and I watched it obsessively on VHS tapes I borrowed from the library…I’ve had a thing for quiet aloof men ever since 🤣🤣🤣 I LIVED for the scene where Elizabeth helps Georgiana with her piano pages and Darcy is just glowing with love across the room ❤️

Megan Brick

& no. They aren’t just wanting to hot guy with the hot guy. They literally could end up on the street after their dad dies. Or… if Bingley & Darcy don’t care about the truth of it all… could end up forced to marry people who they don’t care about. & marriage wasn’t funny. It was a definite. You couldn’t just be like… I want a divorce. Bye. Divorce was not realistic.

I want to believe the best… but you guys act like truly MEN who don’t understand the nuance or understanding of what it’s like to be a woman today, let alone in Regency England. You can’t just “react”. You’re both reasonably intelligent men who know women in your lives. A woman’s tarnished reputation even now is complicated. While men are just studs. I’m not saying take a class in feminism… but maybe don’t be stupid. Once again. Bridgerton is funny fanfiction of the time. Not real. Beyond the clothes & even the way they look at skin… it was not a cute time for women. Women had little to no rights. The littlest amount of slander could destroy a woman’s reputation. The Bennet’s are landowning… sure. But not nearly as wealthy as anyone else. The first episode with Mr Bennet adding & whatever was to convey they weren’t doing well. This is a family that truly was worried about losing everything. If Mr Bennet died… they would have had to live on the charity of others. Have you lived in the charity of other people? In a society that would look down on you for it? You really need to watch more Jane Austen to understand. Sense & Sensibility for what it’s like to be impoverished as a woman, & also Emma, for how people look down on those whose status has been diminished. Mary…. Is sort of a self-righteous asshole. But. She isn’t lying about the time. I realize I’m not a woman & not even remotely educated about the time…. But you guys aren’t just “influencers”. You can educate & learn yourself. Read & / or watch things about Jane Austen & the time. Don’t rely on just Bridgerton.

Wickham was going to be kicked out of his regiment because of his "debts of honor" (gambling debts in Wickham's case). He was going to run off no matter what, according to Denny. Lydia asked to go with him, and because Wickham is a scumbag, he agreed. He intended to just sleep with and abandon Lydia wherever they landed. He never had any other designs on her. Them "running away together" was Lydia's idea that Wickham fed. If Lydia hadn't offered to go with him, Wickham would have just been chillin' in London on his own, taking advantage of someone else, and searching for a legitimately wealthy young woman to marry. Wickham had burned all his bridges in that area of the country, and was just going to start over from scratch where he wasn't known, and his debts and horrible reputation couldn't catch up to him. Beauty standards at the time were very biased against freckles and being tan, as they denoted being outside; meaning the person got them possibly through manual labor and therefore the person was not wealthy. That's why they keep saying Ms. King is ugly. Because she has freckles. I have watched this with headphones on many times, but my mother makes Mrs. Bennett's behavior look reasonable and relaxed, so I am totally desensitized to the shrieking chaos. Granted, I'm also hard-of-hearing.

Mandi Mateer

I don't really believe that Mr. Bennett was being fully serious in that scene with Kitty and the girls. I think he was saying those dramatic things in jest. I think he definitely wants to be a tad more strict but he would never stop them from going to a ball.

Candi Cain

Came here to write exactly this. He's just a POS and took Lydia with him as he escaped his debtors. More than likely she convinced him to take her along because shes a young stupid girl who thought she was in love. He just saw her as an easy lay while he "laid low".

Candi Cain

Having said that about Wickham, it's important to know that he absolutely would have given Lydia the impression that he was going to marry her. Nowadays we would say he groomed her. She's a teenager - Lizzie explained in an earlier episode that Lydia is 15 years old - and he's in his mid to late 20s. Nevertheless, at the time, running off with a man implied there was something shameful or inappropriate about your relationship and whether or not you were actually having sex didn't matter - it was assumed. Lydia would have been considered lucky though, because she did eventually marry him.

Rebecca

Lydia was a secondary motive for Wickham - he had to leave Brighton because he was in debt and couldn't pay. Lydia to him was just a cherry on top - he had no intention of marrying her, he knew the Bennets had no money. Also, Mrs Younge is the governess who Georgiana stayed with and who originally allowed Wickham access to her. Darcy probably thought Wickham would go to Younge again for help hiding, or at least that she might still be in touch with Wickham and would know their whereabouts.

Rebecca

The reason why Lydia running away ruins her sisters' prospects is bc at that time girls that age are basically applying to be wives and the only references or recommendations they have are their family - parents who behave uncouthly are bad enough but a sister who has premarital sex and runs away with a man shows the type of daughter their parents raise. Any daughter of theirs will be assumed to be as immoral as Lydia and will also be assumed to raise the same kind of loose girls for their own future daughters. No respectable family would allow their son to marry one of Lydia's sisters if Wickham hadn't married her.

Rie

Loose morals, a possible bastard child (remember: titles and inheritance are everything to people in this period and there are are no reliable paternity tests yet), and also the possessiveness of a lot of men back then who refused totake a wife that wasn't virginal. There's lots of reasons why Lydia's behavior would reflect badly on the family of 4 other girls trying to marry well and make her look...well, trampy back then. That's just how it was

JackBNimble

The reason the whole family would be ruined including the innocent sisters is that Lydia's actions show her to be if loose morals. It is assumed to be the parent's fault as much as hers. If they raised her to be this way, then the other sisters are assumed to have been raised with the same loose morals. No man of society would want to invite that scandal into their homes.

Guin12

Wickham knew the Bennets had no money, he had no intention of marrying Lydia. He had to sneak away and leave where he was because he'd racked up a lot of debts in the town. Lydia was there, she was young and silly and had been flirting endlessly with him and he was horny so he asked her to come away with him. She just assumed they'd get married but that's because she's silly and naive and thinks he genuinely loves her. Wickham would have left her or sent her back to her family disgraced once he was bored or had to move again. He was forced to marry her because they were discovered. He had no idea Darcy would be the one to track him down or be willing to bribe him to marry Lydia! Jane Austen's books are surprisingly scandalous given they were written and published in the era they're set!

Laura Shepherd

The reason Lydia running away disgraced the family is because she's having premarital sex, living with Wickham unmarried. Women of the time are held to high moral code and it's going to be said they are a family of loose morals. They only saved their reputation by hastily forcing the two marry and kind of fudging the facts on the timing and sweeping it under the rug 😅

Laura Shepherd

Honestly the only time I can do an accent is when I am mimicking Miss Bennet. I literally can’t mimic anyone elses accent

Gabrielle

This is right. Wickham wanted company and was planning to abandon her when he was bored, so say the novel

Danielle

In this time and culture, if an unmarried woman and man spend any time together unchaperoned, it is assumed that they’ve had sex. It gives him a reputation as a “rake,” but it doesn’t materially damage his prospects. She, however, is “ruined,” nobody else will marry her, she brings shame upon the house, etc. Wickham wasn’t trying to blackmail the Bennets. He was going AWOL to escape his debts, and Lydia thought it would be romantic to elope. She assumed they’d get married, he assumed (correctly) that she’d be an easy lay to keep him entertained while he hid in London — he probably planned to ditch her when he was ready to move on. He’s trash, and she’s an idiot.

Ashley Ford

The reason that Lydia running away with Wickham is a disgrace to her family is about virtue (aka virginity). In those times, sex before marriage was shameful, and so Lydia living with Mr Wickham out of wedlock, where they would likely have had sex, would be the ruin of the whole family.

Sam S

Yes she is. You see her in the flashback when Lizzie is reading Darcy's letter.

MamaSeesa

I think Wickham needed to run away because he owed people money and he took Lydia as a convenient distraction. Any girl would've done.

MamaSeesa

When whickham and Lizzie are last together she hints to him that she knows the truth about him, and that she sides with Darcy. I always thought him dong this to Lydia was as a sort of revenge as it would hurt Lizzie, and since he might suspect Lizzie must be closer to Darcy to be able to learn the truth about himself, would hurt Darcy too.

Kathryn Nikkanen

Just like Cher's one woman West Side Story I would enjoy Rizzo has both the mother and Mr Collins

Papuriko Pp

Yeah as someone who's read the book a few times this version really portrays the characters as they are in the book

Francesca White

if he knows that Lizzie and Darcy reconnected this could also be an additional fuck you to Darcy

Papuriko Pp

Mostly agree with Benji's reasoning. Darcy kinda has fuck you money but still, he can allow himself to see that Wickham marries Lydia in order for it to be somewhat acceptable to marry Lizzie (Lydia as the younger one marrying first already being somewhat iffy). And the pickle they find themselves in otherwise is that none of them have money enough to tempt a man to marry them anyways and the type of man with fuck off money would stay clear due to the his reputation getting tarnished of having someone considered promiscous in the family by marriage. So they would not be able to attract men with money = societal standing. And for men without money they offer a lode lose situation as they themselves don't have assets.

Papuriko Pp

I think Mrs. Young is the former governess of Georgiana Darcy, the one who made deal with Wickham how to run away with her and take her dowry if I remember correctly. Also it is always fun to watch and comment something eventhough it is not what I was expected you always make it enjoyable, funny and entertaining.

Marie Kaňovská

Mr. Wickham knew they didn't have money, presumably he ran off with Lydia just to sleep with a young impressionable girl, which he seems to be into because he's a sick person

Francesca White

I’ve always felt this version does a better job paralleling Lydia and her mother—when she’s more concerned about not being involved with the wedding warehouses you can really see that their mother is not much more mature than Lydia.
