Remember to take a closer look at the clothing that the Princes each wear. Not only are they named in their birth order in Latin Ordinals - Primus, Secundus, Tertius, Quartus, Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, with the first daughter born named Una -- But the costume designers used repeating Roman Numeral motifs in each prince's clothing design (for the most part - Quintus gets an arabic numeral 5 for his, and Septimus has both the Roman VII but also medallions with the Arabic numeral 7 (as well as his wrist tattoo). Lamia is the name of Michelle Pfeiffer's Dark Queen of the Witches. With Mormo and Empusa as her sisters. Lamia is actually a very well-known Queen of Witches in English folk tales. When Lamia first meets Ditchwater Sal (the yellow varda wagon redhead) she reveals herself to Sal saying, "Oh shut up! I know who you are, and I swear by the Ordinances of the Sisterhood to which we both belong, I mean you no harm this day." And Sal visibly relaxes and welcomes her to share her meal. Because as evil as they may be, Witches cannot lie, or lose their powers. So even though Sal did Lamia dirty with the limbus grass to steal truth out of her, Lamia had already promised "I mean you no harm this day." So she couldn't - hurt - Ditchwater Sal, but instead put up the magical interdiction to cloak the Star from her. Also this is why the bargain Sal struck with Tristan on the road, that he would arrive at the Wall in exactly the same shape he was in now, Sal had to adhere to, or her magic would not work on him. A witch can play loopholes all she likes, but she must keep true to her given word. That's why upon converging on Sal and Una and Yvaine at the gap in the Wall at the end, Lamia was not constrained by her word any more (she had only promised Sal no harm for that original day). And why Lamia simply blasted Sal with everything she had, trusting she'd soon have the Star's heart to fix the magic cost. And also -- how the witches got their "news" (love the anachronism) was also incredibly old Witch Lore going back to the dawn of humanity. Divination by reading entrails of a fresh blood sacrifice is pre-Biblical powers of witches lore. Lamia by folklore was the Queen of Libya who dallied with Zeus, and jealous Hera drove Lamia mad until Lamia killed her own children. After this, in her grief, Lamia became a witch or a demoness who devoured children in the night. Michelle Pfeiffer may not have begun her big screen career as a witch (her first role was the female lead in Grease 2) but she was certainly one of the most famous witches in American witchcraft lore, with her 1989 role as Sukie in The Witches of Eastwick, starring with fellow witches Cher and Susan Sarandon (Black hair, Red hair, and Michelle with the Blonde hair) all acting opposite Jack Nicholson in the film adaptation of New England author John Updike's novel of the same name. For Pfeiffer the characters could not be more different, but she still cut her teeth early on in her superstardom with a very popular and iconic role back in the end of the 80s. Glad you liked it.

The story does have a good way of hiding that fact, they tell us in the beginning and then don't mention it till right at the end, it makes it more of a surprise. We would agree with you on that, we felt it was more of an introduction to adult fantasy movies like the ones you mentioned, then again most of us grew up watching early Disney fantasy stories before they started making the big movies like lord of the rings etc.

Yup you guys should've figured out his royal parentage sooner, though we all randomly miss things at times. This movie was greater than the sum of its parts. As a fan of more serious adult fantasy (as in Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire, Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth, etc) this one is a bit young adult, shallow, and silly on the surface... but again it becomes something greater than it's parts and is just a good fun heartwarming movie.
