When Gon says "I'll use everything" I have seen it translated in different versions/languages of the episode as "I'll use everything I'll ever have" or other phrases along those lines so there might be a slight translation mixup for that particuliar phrase. But essentially that might've been Gon's condition (as well as other things maybe) to get everything he'd ever acquire in his lifetime in terms of power and use it for this boost.

I was addressing part of their discussion how they claimed there's no way Togashi didn't plan it out, but then Caleb goes and conclude that it wasn't planned out detail-wise. The thing is Togashi probably did plan it out because it deals with the same issues Yu Yu Hakusho did. He expanded on previous high potential ideas, which is why it's so complex and beautiful.

I say Yu Yu Hakusho is what happens when Togashi writes a "typical Shounen", while HunterXHunter is simply Togashi exploring and pushing the limits of his potential and creativity.

SOS Bros... please remember that Togashi's previous major hit series Yu Yu Hakusho dealt with very similar themes. The Chimera Ants arc was pretty much what the middle to latter part of Yu Yu Hakusho was about, but more fleshed out. The whole thing about how we're not supposed to trust the good vs evil thing, with demons being the actual victims and the spirit world being corrupt assholes etc...

Exactly. Gon is much deeper than many realize, and clearly had issues from the beginning regarding self-value. Even he himself doesn’t realize it
Jay Hunter
2018-11-07 12:55:45 +0000 UTC
You can see this as a pattern with Gon all over the series. It shows the lack of value Gon places on himself, most likely because Ging chose being a Hunter over raising Gon. And Nen is a reflection of one's ego and the choices that ego makes.

I don't think it's supposed to be grotesque. Gon matured himself to his peak age/physical form using up his whole lifespan's energy(Nen, Willpower, ability to make choices) I guess you could say the hair is a physical representation of an immense amount of time it would have taken Gon to reach his full potential.

Gon calls Pitou a liar because he finally recognized she wasn't going to fulfill the promise she made to him in episode 116. She lied to him in 116 saying she would heal kite, knowing she could not. When Gon finally accepted that--which took him a long time because he is both extremely hopeful and believes that he can will anything to happen. Gon places trust promises a lot, this is shown throughout the show since the first episode with Mito's pinky swear. Meleoron promises Gon he isn't an enemy and Gon believes him right away. Gon keeps his promises. "I WILL KILL YOU, PITOU!!"

gons weird character, like u talked about, with his mild sociopath behaviour and stuff, kind of made me think about why hisoka was so invested/interested/entertained by gon. maybe he forsaw something within gon that he recognized as darkness. just a thought that popped up.
After many times of watching this, I just realized that when Killua tries to save Gon, you can hear his footstep, opposite to him having silent feet. There's a lot of ways to interpret this but just a little thing I noticed.

To me, Gon’s hatsu itself is foreshadowing for this. Jajanken is focusing all your power to one point, sacrificing your own aura defense/safety. Just like him focusing solely on killing Pitou while abandoning his own well-being
Jay Hunter

I also find the form off but I think thats the point. This transformation isn't the result of proper development, despite the glow it's all mechanics no shine. Gon's willpower basically acted however it could within the rules of Nen to fulfill his wish. This is purely my speculation but I think Gon's personality and the fact he is an enhancer really influenced the form. Given the scope and possibilities of Nen you could make an 'ultimate form' be pretty much anything but for Gon all that matter was the result.
Watcherdude65
2018-11-06 20:51:41 +0000 UTC
This is how I understood it, too. He barely even registered Pitou's declaration of them having to kill Gon. There was only one thing in his head and that was to heal Kite. So when Pitou did not, he called them a liar.
EvAnn
2018-11-06 20:46:22 +0000 UTC
I think that is the tragedy of Pitou and many chimera ants, that their potential is cut short. From the development of her empathy and seeing similar changes in Youpi we get the feeling that maybe, just maybe there could have been a positive future for Pitou. Of course that doesn't forgive her actions and the lives she took but it shows both the light and dark of humanity in Gon slaughtering her and her splendid loyalty of relief.

I've been waiting for this episode reaction since this series began. I've watched this show around 5ish times now, and each time you watch you realize that there is so much foreshadowing to this one episode. From restrictions and pledges to Gon's insane nature sometimes. Its really really masterful. Welcome to the anti-super saiyan transformation ya'll. In anime a transformation in a character is usually met with joy and awe. The author wanted to turn it on its head. This transformation is horrifying and tragic. Love it so dang much!

To my understanding, when Gon said "I'll use everything" He was talking about all the power/nen he will ever have in his life. Gon did say he did not care what happened all that he wanted was to make Pitou pay for what he/she did to kite.

I really gotta get this off my chest. My first reaction to this was just like everyone, but every time I revisit this episode, the person I really feel sorry for is pitou. When pitou is first introduced, I simply hated her cuz of kite and I was just so focused on gon but it’s so sad that she went out this way. She may have been violent and malicious from birth but that is due to her being born from the queen’s consumption of malicious humans in ngl. Then we see her grow to represent the compassion the ants have and she shows so much potential for more that just evil. When she is healing komugi, she probably didn’t even realize who gon was and who this kite person gon was talking about was cuz she was so focused on healing and cuz she never learned kites name. The moment she heard komugi was safe on the phone, she could have ended gon but having learned empathy, decided to hold true to her word and heal kite but found out it was the person she had killed, sealing her own fate in a way. Even as she is dying, her mind is only having selfless thoughts of sacrifice for the king. She knew she couldn’t win but still fought and died a brutal, lonely death. Anyways that’s all haha I loved Jacob likenening gons condition to a blank check and Caleb’s reaction at 18:28 was priceless as he realized pitou was being clad by residual nen that became more powerful after death. Edit:well, I thought he did for a moment haha either way, the entire discussion was amazing as always

Back in the Yorknew it was mentioned that if a users will is strong enough during death, their nen persists and becomes even stronger. This is one of the reasons that the Phantom Troupe didn't continue to target Kurapika, as killing him could cause his chain around Chrollo's heart to kill him. Here we see this happening with Pitou
Neutreu
2018-11-06 18:37:01 +0000 UTC
as Phinks said in episode 58, nen can become even more fearsome after death. That's why the phantom troupe didn't wan't to kill Kurapika after he put the judgment chain in Chrollo's heart.

This also reflects Gon’s despair over Kite. He felt so responsible for his death that he wanted to die and take all that hurt Kite with him. That is why when he losses his arm he feels joy over the fact that in some way he was punished more for letting Kite get injured by Pitou.
