State Of Sterling: It's Been A Minute...
Added 2025-01-28 16:46:47 +0000 UTCHello you lovely patrons!
It’s been a long time since I posted an SoS update. And oh no, it just hit me, I think there’s an Asking Sterling podcast that’s looooong past its due date as well. For this, I can only apologize. Life is difficult - not exactly bad, just full of responsibilities and obligations and physical pain management.
Also, I should say that I really struggle to reply to messages sent to me via Patreon itself, which I also feel bad about. The site itself sucks for doing anything on. If you’d like replies, please hit me up via email, Bluesky DMs, or the Asking Sterling channel in the Trash Palace Discord. Emails might take a while due to ADHD, but I try to get back to any I receive.
So yeah, been a while. I’m on a bit of a hypomanic one at the moment however, and felt overwhelmingly compelled to finally do another SoS post. I find it best to go with my brain’s flow during these times.
I could offer a bunch of excuses for the lack of updates, but I’ll just say that it’s all I can do to get a Jimquisition and Podquisition up every week without sacrificing quality. Speaking of, I do hope that the recent output has been to your liking.
You’ll have likely noticed that the show more regularly adopts a “video essay” approach as opposed to purely ranting about the state of the games industry every single week. This week I decided to drop the series name from uploaded video titles and present the essay episodes as “The Jimquisition Presents” in title sequences. I mostly want those essays to appear more standalone since they, well, kind of are, and deserve to be seen as individual videos even if they’re still under the same umbrella.
To be honest, the distinction only matters in my own head.
While current affairs videos are still in the rotation, one can’t overestimate how much more I enjoy the job when I write these more thoughtful videos.
Ever since I did that “Political Dark Souls” video many years ago, I’ve wanted to do more evergreen essay stuff, and that recent Mouthwashing video was such a fulfilling thing to make that I’ve decided to keep at it. We had the Sengoku Basara episode two weeks ago, the fandom/Dynasty Warriors/critique one yesterday, and there are multiple others to get done.
One of the benefits of no longer having any stakes left with YouTube is that I’m much more comfortable following whimsy rather than wasting my effort trying to build anything on the platform. I rarely bother to look at viewcounts anymore but I did see some when uploading yesterday’s video and noticed the Basara video seems to be the least viewed episode ever. It was, however, one of the most positively received, and was a joy to make. So sod it.
If there’s nothing to lose, there’s nothing to stop me making videos about any obscure videogame nonsense that pleases me. Maybe I’ll do something on Chaos Legion.
Expressing a lack of care about the views side of things has often been characterized as “coping” by the internet’s usual gang of chudsome twats, and maybe there’s been some of that, but we’ve had over three years of Number Go Down - almost anything loses its novelty by that point.
It did bother me a lot once - the sub losses after coming out hurt and the channel’s algorithmic burial was scary - but emotionally I’ve moved on. I’m confident I’m putting out good work even if far fewer people see it, and my sense of upward mobility comes from writing these days, not YouTube.
The only people to whom it’s still exactly as interesting now as it was in 2021 are the aforementioned twats, some of whom apparently refresh the channel all Monday so they can post triumphantly about it within literal seconds of a new video going up. I believe the record is 30 seconds, and how starved of a win are you if you trip over yourself weekly to celebrate a really old secondhand “victory” over an online D-lister?
Despite the tanked visibility and inability to reach new people, the Patreon has held steady for over a year and I cannot thank y’all enough for that. I am guessing a combination of written reviews and the overall quality bump of the show have had a big hand in that. I’m just incredibly appreciative of y’all still believing in the work.
I certainly feel the show is at least on a high creatively.
The videos aren’t just longer, but more varied and in-depth, and of course I have to give a TON of credit to Z. Mann Zilla, whose editing work is astounding. The effort they put in coupled with the talent they have makes every video better by miles for their presence. Not only that, they “get” me in a way few would be able to, and they cared enough when they started to note what I’d add/change in my final edit drafts to such a degree that final drafts require a lot less of my direct input, at least when I’m not going overboard with them. Basically, they nailed it.
Zilla really is, as they say, the extra poo that makes the difference.
Right now, reviews aren’t as regularly posted as they have been in recent months, but that’s only due to the time of year. Once releases pick up, so will they. I do believe returning to reviews helped keep me ticking to a tremendous degree. Readers love them and I love writing them, so that’ll continue.
Podquisition is Podquisition, it just persists, and that’s a nice, stable thing.
We “celebrated” ten years of the show and podcast a little while back. The Jimquisition has technically run longer, but the day the show went independent was the most trackable and important landmark. Whatever else may have happened and regardless of one’s opinion of me, there can be no denying that ten years of publishing an episode every single Monday without a single break is a phenomenal accomplishment.
The first half of last year saw me struggle with the worst depression of my adult life, and it led to me dropping off live-streaming among other things. A few months ago I returned to doing them and it’s been lovely. While I can’t do a regular schedule due to life factors and pain, I try and at least stream once or twice a week. Do feel free to check it out.
Outside of the main work, I’ve been continuing to pursue videogame writing gigs and build that career into something as sustainable as it is rewarding. The disgusting rise of inadequate AI and tumultuous state of an exec-ravaged industry makes things way more difficult than they should be, but I’m confident enough in my talent as a writer that I think I’ll survive.
Writing and surviving are the two things I know I’m truly great at.
Date Everything is out on February 14th, and it’ll demonstrate what I’m really capable of. I can scarcely believe that a project I joined years ago is now so close to release. Vampire Survivors continued to be a fruitful thing for me throughout last year, with Ode to Castlevania being wonderful fun to contribute to. Some of my bestiary entries for that still aren’t in the game yet because game dev is fun - hopefully you’ll see them at some point!
I also am attached to a lovely little queer indie game, Quantum Witch, currently with a demo on Steam. I’m responsible for a chapter revolving around one of the game’s gods, Laticauda, who has been immensely fun to write. This project had me sold the moment I was introduced to The Skeleton Who Can See Through Time.
Wrestling continues to be a big part of my world, with the focus mainly being on Tidal in Huddersfield, True Grit in Leeds, and Pinfall in Manchester. I’m also still the PCW Women’s Champion - three years in March! I turned heel at that promotion and at Tidal recently, bringing the cackling supervillain version of the Commander back after years of being a face. God damn I adore being a baddie.
That’s about it for updates. As I draft this, Laura wrapped up subs on what’ll be yesterday’s video when I publish this, so I gotta go get that done before I forget! As always thank you so so so much for all your support - it means the world to me.
Thank you,
Stephanie.

You're an amazing writer and I've always loved your sense of humor and comedic style. My household has adopted many phrases and bits from Boston's Favorite Son that are just now part of our everyday vernacular. BFS always brings me the biggest smiles and laughs and I'm always repeating episodes. Pretty sure the phrase "Wrist deep in tuna town" gave me a hernia from sheer laughter. Thank God for You, you'll always have my support!

2025-02-01 20:31:53 +0000 UTCThis has very little to do with anything but I wanted to let you know that you are one of the major reasons I was able to acknowledge, and go on to overcome, my addiction to gacha games. Your videos speaking out against loot boxes helped put an awful lot I was unwilling or unable to acknowledge into words - and did at least leave my husband forearmed with the knowledge of how my addiction had even manifested. I'm three years clean as of this writing, and endeavor to be sure to stay that way. Thank you for all that you do, Steph, and never stop speaking your truths. My life, for one, is immeasurably better for it.

2025-01-31 18:31:40 +0000 UTC👍 Yep completely understandable. YouTube does kill both creativity and joy.

2025-01-31 14:08:07 +0000 UTCI would really love it if we could record BFS weekly, but we have to snatch glimmers of Jonathan when he’s available. His life is stunningly busy. We did get to record 45mins with him this week, so we’ll have a short BFS coming soon.

2025-01-30 14:50:45 +0000 UTCThank you so much, it honestly delights me when someone says things like BFS are the highlight for them. I should be ashamed of myself 😂.

2025-01-30 14:48:16 +0000 UTCThank you so much 😊! As far as Spin-Off Doctors is concerned, it’s not *officially* done. Technically it’s still on the docket, but lord knows when we’ll get to do another.
Stephanie Sterling
2025-01-30 14:48:05 +0000 UTCProbably not for the foreseeable. To be honest, YouTube has absolutely burned me out on videos, and beyond Jimquisition I don’t want to make them anymore. At least not for a while. That platform killed a lot of my love for video making.

2025-01-30 14:46:04 +0000 UTCOh I love a good video essay so I'm excited to see more of them!

2025-01-29 23:39:46 +0000 UTCI for one am totally on board with the video essays you've been putting out, Steph. It's allowed for some really different and really deep topics, and I'm looking forward to the others you said you're working on. They're doubly good for me because I am much better with videos than written work. Not that I haven't read and appreciated the newer written content and reviews; I've read almost all of them from start to finish, and you definitely have become a great writer over time. But, for me, audio and visual elements help me to really get a better idea of things and focus on things better. This past Jimquisition really highlighted that for me, because I got soooo much more out of actually hearing and seeing the complaints and issues with Dynasty Warriors Origins than just reading about them. While I know there are some things that can't be seen in a video like the responsiveness of controls or the sheer scale of some things throughout a game, getting to see gameplay, hear game audio and voices, see how po-faced everyone is, and etc really help me wrap things together for a better understanding. That said, even if I'm more here for the Jimquisition than the reviews, I'll reiterate that those have been SPECTACULAR lately, and I'll certainly continue waiting for Mondays with excitement for as long as you want to keep putting out videos. If there were ever other video projects outside of streaming you were to do in the future, would probably be all over those too, since I still go back and watch old episodes of Jimpressions, Heaving Toy Chest, Direct-to-Video, Boglinwatch, and etc. I'm just here for your passion for the things you put time into. One last thing on that front; Is "The Spin-Off Doctors" officially done then? Was my favorite podcast you and Conrad did, and would love to hear you two's off-the-cuff takes on newer video game movies like Sonic 2 & 3, Tetris, Uncharted, Borderlands, Free Guy, Gran Turismo, Angry Birds 2, Wreck-It-Ralph 2, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Welcome to Raccoon City, and etc. Honestly few others I trust to get to the heart of a movie besides you two, while keeping my attention and enjoying myself. For now, hope your 2025 goes well and your mental and physical health go strong for the year!

2025-01-29 19:40:58 +0000 UTCI, as one measly view, am always there for your work. And, for as long as I am able, I will always be. You have always been a great presence and welcome voice but the last three years you have really found you. Love you, Steph. Whatever happens, never doubt your importance to our lives.

2025-01-29 17:18:13 +0000 UTCThe "Political Dark Souls" video is probably my favourite JQ video. It's the only one I have reliably gone back to repeatedly over the years. I'll also selfishly echo something I said years ago when the Pareon first started - as much as I love the Jimquisition, the comedy is what prompted my to actually dig into my wallet. Everything from Podtoid through to Boston's Favourite son and the often overlooked top ten videos is absolute gold in my thoroughly shattered mind.

2025-01-29 13:04:39 +0000 UTCI've enjoyed the recent video essays. The mouthwashing one was especially fantastic - one of your best videos ever. Wishing you all the best.

2025-01-29 11:44:11 +0000 UTCGenuinely, you (aside from my girlfriend) are one of the main reasons I enjoy Mondays. I can always count on your uploads to make me power through work, just so I can enjoy a few minutes of peace at the end (i.e. rage at the fucked state of the industry, or delight in your hyperfixation du jour). Thank you, Commander, and thank God for you ❤️

2025-01-29 07:51:25 +0000 UTCYou are indispensable and the only voice in gaming that I *must* listen to.

2025-01-29 05:06:12 +0000 UTCKeep up the fantastic work, as ever. Happy to support you for as long as you continue to be true to yourself, which you no doubt always will be.

2025-01-29 02:43:08 +0000 UTCYou're more of an A-lister for me. I've been following your work since you worked at destructoid, and its impressive how consistent you have been in quality going up over time.

2025-01-29 02:00:39 +0000 UTCAs a longtime fan since the Dtoid days, my favorite content has always been the debaucherous podcasts with Jonathan and Conrad. I know you'd do more if scheduling and other issues allowed. But I really wish we could get a consistent output of that. The amount of joy Bostons Favorite Son gives me is ridiculous. I'm one of those shattered sickos who relistens to old eps all the time. Otherwise, glad you're doing okay!

2025-01-28 23:56:29 +0000 UTCHey Steph, one of the vast silent majority here, just wanted to say I'll be here to watch, read, and support you for likely a very, very long time. You're one of the most insightful and, frankly, brave voices in the video game sphere, and the fact that you pretty much actively ignore the youtube game, with its algorithms and all the other bullshit, is what I really respect and love about your content. You're not afraid to speak your mind on issues others would worry would lose them ad revenue or viewer counts, and your genuine passion comes through in pretty much everything you do. I hope you know you're a real inspiration to so many people, I hope you're proud and fulfilled with all the things you make, and I wish more people would appreciate how awesome you are. We're here to support you in whatever ways we can, even if we rarely, or never, actually post in the comments. Now I'll go back to silently enjoying your content for another decade, and I hope you have a great day!

2025-01-28 19:54:48 +0000 UTCI’m so proud of the community that’s come up around my work. People really can be so lovely.

2025-01-28 19:53:07 +0000 UTCThank you 😊! I really appreciate the encouragement.
Stephanie Sterling
2025-01-28 19:52:56 +0000 UTCThank you so much. If nothing else, I can be proud of never selling out or compromising my work to play the game. I could alter my language, turn on all the ads, get a Raycon sponsorship, and only talk about things the algorithm rewards, and I’d have a lot less going against me. But I sure as hell wouldn’t be proud of myself.
Stephanie Sterling
2025-01-28 19:51:41 +0000 UTCPicks you up. Spins you. The world is full of fuck, but we stay silly, right? You do good work. I wish I could support you more than I do, but it's hard out here in the trenches -- you know how it is. What matters is that you're still out here, and you're still creating something that matters -- something that truly matters in a world where value has been almost entirely commodified into a purely capitalistic metric. In a world of AI listicles and journalism-as-advertising, you're brave enough to still hold and share actual opinions, come what may for having done so. It... depresses me how vanishingly rare that has become, but I confess even I want to withdraw from the world these days... you are an inspiration to keep fighting the good fight, both on matters of importance, and matters of extreme (but vital) pettiness. So, as always, and with emphasis this time... thank god for you, Steph! Thank god for you. You'll get to that State of Sterling in your own time -- the people who matter won't mind, and the people who mind don't matter. Thanks for being the irreplaceable you.

2025-01-28 19:31:23 +0000 UTC"If there’s nothing to lose, there’s nothing to stop me making videos about any obscure videogame nonsense that pleases me." At this point, seems like the wisest way to approach YT for any creator.

2025-01-28 19:14:04 +0000 UTCYo Steph, I’ve been a pretty silent fan of your work since I encountered you way back in the escapist days. I mainly just lurk but I think you put out really good, really important stuff 👍 You are who I think of whenever I feel like being annoying and talk about how if Marx were alive today he’d be using the games industry as an example instead of linen manufacturers or whatever the hell is actually in Das Kapital. I was a fan back in 2012 and I’m a fan now. Honestly, the biggest difference I have noticed pre/post coming out is that you seem happier and I like to see that. Keep on surviving- you’re good at it and the world needs you doing your thing. Much love and you’re always welcome in my swamp

2025-01-28 19:11:45 +0000 UTCThank you for the update! I've seen your community refine itself, and I'm really happy with how it's shaped. You have a lot of kind and interesting people in your corner and it's really nice to see

2025-01-28 18:18:39 +0000 UTCHuge love, steph! 💖 Honestly I'm really excited by the video essay style of content, and in general all artistic pursuits that you are naturally pulled towards, rather than feel you "owe to the algorithm". I'll be honest, having been burnt first hand, I find the state of current affairs in the videogame industry too depressing and frankly triggering, so I struggle to watch such content these days :( So I'm very excited to know I'll still have the spectacular steph available for me to watch without my brain breaking at the awfulness of it all! 💖 All the love 💖

2025-01-28 17:35:47 +0000 UTCI'm mostly a lurker, don't post anything really, but wanted to say your view sentiments are very similar to others I subscribe to. Their favorite videos to make almost literally 100% of the time are the worst performing for views and likes. It's weird and sad. However I personally loved the basara video and continued DW coverage. I'm like you an OG ROTK/DW fan from ROTK 3 on SNES and DW4 on PS2. I like the essay style better than rants, but both are obviously good 😊. Anyways, thanks for all you do.

2025-01-28 17:19:30 +0000 UTCI haven't had time to watch the Sengoku Basara video yet, but I definitely plan to! I love the video essays and I'm all for more of them. The Mouthwashing one left me silent for a moment after it ended. And hey, even if the distinction only matters in your own head, then it still matters. (This post has also reminded me to wishlist Date Everything and Quantum Witch, so thank you for that.)

2025-01-28 17:04:19 +0000 UTCThis update's been really nice to see, it feels like things are going really positively for you and I'm so glad to hear it. I watch the show every monday, no matter the subject, but I have found myself really engaged with your takes on topics you genuinely love, and I really hope that you keep going in that direction. I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game, nor even heard about sengoku basara before your video, but I feel like you've shown me what a real fan of this genre sees in it, and I'm really glad that you're able to really get into the "Why do you care and thus why should I care" angle that so few reviewers manage. Also, Z-Man's editing is incredible, as a loyal viewer of many years now, please do not stop the Lee jokes, they consistent-lee keep me giggling.

2025-01-28 16:58:15 +0000 UTCAs a long time viewer who doesn't necessarily enjoy the ranting (I don't have to go out of the way for doom scrolling these days), I am both proud to continue supporting the Cassandra of video games for being a necessary voice that is out there ranting as she wonts to rant, and have quite been enjoying the occasional review video, as you have the time. I think I speak for so many of us when I say: Keep being you, you're awesome.
