We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

The Expanse 2x7 Uncut Reaction

From my understanding, Holden was on his way to kill Cortazar. Similar to why Miller killed Dresden. After his conversation with Dawes, Fred mentioning that Cortazar found a potential other sample, and seeing how the belters were so eager to use the missiles, he couldn’t let them get their hands on the protomolecule.

Tork Penderloin

The scar on the neck of Dawes is from the old helmets that belters used in the earlier years. They would cause burns from being poor quality. The tattoos that the belters get are in memorium to those that came before them.

Tork Penderloin

The US Marines still use the term Gunnery Sargeant.

Lyn Hurst

Hard disagree here. There's no racism involved, because belter beliefs aren't isolating anything about anyones DNA or skin color or "ethnic features", etc, whatsoever. The tension is often *classist*, but racist? Nah. These are nations with an entirely different history of peoples, and their problems and conflicts are distinctly system-relevant (literally *about* the context of their environments and politics across MASSIVE distances from each other - literally planets apart). Classism and tribalism are prevalent. Nobody of any importance from any faction makes any notable conflict about anybody's DNA, skin color, etc. Except when people say "skinnies". That probably qualifies as racist, because it's actually *about* the physiology of the Belters, and *about* whether it makes them superior or inferior. I assert that humanity at the stage of The Expanse would require an alternate definition for "racism" if we're going to include the ethnic melting pots of Earth, Mars, and The Belt as "racist" against the other over the socio-political tensions as described in the show & books. Because I don't qualify them as equal to the "racism" and its history as *we* know racism. So, I strongly disagree about that take. I understand why people may qualify it at first pass, but I don't think our definition of that is adequate for what they're all experiencing because humanity as *we* know it literally has never had to grapple with the scale, distance, and issues of mankind that they are in The Expanse. There's entirely different implications and nuance to their context. Our "racism" isn't it. Classism, tribalism are more useful terms to characterize their conflicts. And helpfully, they're already overtly wielded in the writing and framing of the stories.

Trepanation21

Pudgey is right about the use of "Inners". Belters use that as a racist pejorative in regards to people from Earth and Mars. You'll notice that Holden, Amos, Alex, and Fred don't go around calling Belters "Skinnies". Belters are openly racist and that racism guides a lot of their actions.

Beat Conductor

Yes, this was a great pickup by them. I was hesitant to mention it because I think there might be a mention of what it means later. Not a big reveal in the scheme of things tho.

wp3

It's actually Gunnery Sergeant which is a rank. And the nickname is Gunny.

wp3

Wow, excellent summary without including spoilers! See folks, it can be done!

Jua

Right! Must be AI generated. Not up to scruff. Wouldn't cost much to hire a human to correct errors...

Paul

This episode is basically just Dawes making rounds and gathering info, and he is such an intriguing and interesting character that the episode is engaging the whole way through. And I love how it furthers the plot of the whole show as well. And of course Bobby’s storyline too. My heart aches for her every time I see her having to relive the pain of what she went through on Ganymede. Spartan, it makes me laugh whenever you say you love space battles cause this is literally nothing compared to what’s coming! Oh and I also cannot wait until you get to see Amos’s backstory!

AnastasiyaK

The captions in this episode are awful, absolutely awful. Over and over again, they got things wrong. And it's a shame, because this episode has some of the best written scenes of political intrigue in the series. Basically, guys, just pay attention to what you heard. Don't worry so much about what it says on the screen. That stuff is often right and helpful, but not always, and in this episode, definitely not.

Tony Camas

I literally said the same exact thing verbatim in this episode years and years ago on my first viewer, "I freaking love space battles!" Ha. And of course you've seen NOTHING yet. I feel like exploding knowing what's to come.

Paul

Yup exactly! Nice little detail that Holden doesn't have a clue what Dawes is referencing. He's thinking, wait what, you don't like my hair? 😮

Paul

The subtitle is wrong, Dawes does say "just missing the hat" He's talking about Miller, but Holden doesn't get the reference because Miller left the hat behind before they met.

Freja Corbinne

Bobbie is a Gunny Sargeant, that is why the man interrogating her kept calling her gunny. A purple heart is given to people wounded in battle. My great grandfather was shot in battle in France in World War I and received one. Another clarification, they were on Ganymede when they were attacked. Ganymede is a moon of Jupiter. They were nowhere near Venus. I definitely agree with you guys S&P, Naomi keeping the protomolecule and not telling anyone on their crew, especially Holden was a mistake. I am loving Dawes. Very compelling character.

Lyn Hurst

Dawes is more or less the Belt equivalent of Avasarala, though with a more grounded perspective given his lived history. He's the kind of person willing to be ruthless when necessary to advance the interests of the Belt, and he doesn't entertain idealism or naivete, which is why he focused hard on Naomi during his visit to the Roci, he knows Holden's an idealist and unwilling to bend his personal principles to serve a greater goal, whereas Naomi is less of an open book in comparison. His hunt for Fred's "Secret weapon" calls back to that group conversation from earlier in the episode, where he indirectly warned Fred that "Earthers cannot look upon a thing but wonder who it belongs to", whereas with belters, he states "the more you share, the more your bowl will be plentiful". The belt just saw a whole station of their people wiped out because they were considered disposable. Ganymede, which is effectively the bread basket of the belt, and the main center for reproductive health in the belt, was devastated by the UN/Mars conflict, one in a long line of belter homes where the inner planets have fought their proxy wars/battles. Some new technology drove Eros into Venus. They're scared and looking for answers. It's Fred's instinct to withhold that information. Dawes (and arguably most belters) clearly believe it should be shared. Folks can argue which is the better path to take, but at the end of the day, the belters are the ones suffering, the belters are the ones made vulnerable, they have no leverage and no way to defend themselves against the whims of the inners who are throwing their weight around while belters are effectively blindfolded. Dawes has the pull to try to do something, and he's not about to sit on his hands and do nothing when he could try to shine a light on their collective situation.

Amber A

Yeah, they established late S1 that Mao's group blew up the Cant to raise tensions between the UN and Mars due to water rationing and predicted unrest at Ceres, and the resulting unrest belt-wide. This paranoia would get the UN focused on Mars, and Mars focused on the UN. If any focus on the belt would happen, it'd be on Ceres, not Eros, where they would be running their second wide-scale test.

Amber A

A few name clarifications: Gunnery Sergeant ("Gunny") Roberta ("Bobbie") Draper - She is most often called Gunny or Bobbie. And Fred's right hand woman's name is Camina Drummer.

Sheri

Holden is a long way from hauling ice on the Canterbury now! He didn't even want to be Exec, and now he's at the middle of deciding the fate of Earth, Mars and Belt. fyi Draper's superiors keep calling her 'Gunny' because she's a Marine Gunnery Sergeant, old term.

PNWKyle

I thought it was "sister" Edit: Looked up the wiki, yes you're right, "Star"

Lindsay Mathieson

Subtitles in the episode are a bit off. Dawes does say Hat, not Heart. Earlier Chrisjen says Eros but the subtitles said Earth. When Dawes says he needs a ship like the Roci defending the docks on Ceres, the subtitles say dogs instead of docks.

Golladan

Setara = Star

Golladan

Mid-season episodes for The Expanse do go crazy

Brandon

I don't think it's necessary for season 3/book 2 end. It's not as big of a cliffhanger.

Golladan

You are correct - S02E05 is where book one ends, so yes, its kinda a mid season finale. Additionally - Book 2 ends on S03E06 and you may want to do another dual episode drop (S3, Ep 5 & 6). Book 3 ends with the S3 finale. So yeah, the pace for S2 and S3 is pretty crazy. After that, the season endings match the books - S4, S5 and S6.

Lindsay Mathieson

And the plot thickens! The scars on Dawes neck are from early models of EVA suits. They would burn the wearer at the seals. The tattoos are a tribute belters (younger ones) have made to remember those times and a sign of belter solidarity.
